login screen.

Title:
Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape (when touchpad is
  disabled)

Status in X.Org X server:
  Invalid
Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Steps to reproduce on my machine:
  1) open inkscape
  2) click anywhere on workspace

  Result:
X dies, back to login prompt

  Expected result:
  nothing should happen

  Details of my setup:

I did not manage to get an Xorg backtrace yet as I don't have a second
maching to do the remote SSH thing.
This bug looks a lot like #1023004, I opened a new one because the old one is
"fix released" with no-one assigned to.

The install is fresh on a new laptop. I have since switched to the
xorg-bleeding PPA, but this did not fix the problem. I am also now
using the trunk PPA of inkscape, without change of behaviour.

Please advise if more information is needed.

This is a replication of a bug at launchpad, which currently affects 20
users[1].

I am opening here in hope for possible feedback from devs. Please note
that the bug potentially was fixed in the development versions (see
below).

Short summary:
In inkscape, simply clicking on the workspace will crash Xorg, and throw the
user back to login screen. For a detailed error message, please refer to the
launchpad bug.
This bug seems to be related to disabled touchpads - all affected users used
laptops. Enabling the previously disabled touchpad will prevent the crash. For
some users, disabling the touchpad via software would not cause the crash,
while for others there was no difference. Due to this correlation with input
hardware, a bug in inkscape itself seems unlikely.

The bug disappeared with switching to the xorg-edgers ppa in Ubuntu, but it is
unclear exactly why.
The bug was still present in the following xorg-edgers package og
xserver-xorg-core:
2:1.13.0+git20120920.70e57668-0ubuntu0ricotz
and disappeared in
2:1.13.0.901+git20121123+server-1.13-branch.c0e68f8e-0ubuntu0ricotz~quantal

As very similar issues were reported before in launchpad[2] and declared fixed,
there might be an underlying root cause which is still open.

Please, if you already know that the bug was present in 1.13.0 and not
anymore in 1.13.0.901, check the git log between those versions. It
would have likely taken you less time than filing a new bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081108] Re: Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape (when touchpad is disabled)

2013-03-05 Thread Nils Ole Tippenhauer
Thanks Hakan for this confirmation.

@all:
I posted a related bug at X.org's bugtracker. Peter Hutterer confirmed that
this bug was most likely resolved in the git-version of X.org in late 2012. The
original bug report was:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54934

There are two workarounds for everyone who is affected:
- Activate touchpad again
- Install X.org from the edgers ppa (see comment #6)

At this point, there is no need for additional confirmations of this bug
unless one of these two suggestions does not resolve the problem. Thank
you all for your contribution, and of course most Peter Hutterer for
fixing the bug originaly.

I'm setting this to fix released for now

Title:
Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape (when touchpad is
  disabled)

Status in X.Org X server:
  Unknown
Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Steps to reproduce on my machine:
  1) open inkscape
  2) click anywhere on workspace

  Result:
X dies, back to login prompt

  Expected result:
  nothing should happen

  Details of my setup:

I did not manage to get an Xorg backtrace yet as I don't have a second
maching to do the remote SSH thing.
This bug looks a lot like #1023004, I opened a new one because the old one is
"fix released" with no-one assigned to.

The install is fresh on a new laptop. I have since switched to the
xorg-bleeding PPA, but this did not fix the problem. I am also now
using the trunk PPA of inkscape, without change of behaviour.

Please advise if more information is needed.

Title:
Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape (when touchpad is
  disabled)

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Steps to reproduce on my machine:
  1) open inkscape
  2) click anywhere on workspace

  Result:
X dies, back to login prompt

  Expected result:
  nothing should happen

  Details of my setup:

I did not manage to get an Xorg backtrace yet as I don't have a second
maching to do the remote SSH thing.
This bug looks a lot like #1023004, I opened a new one because the old one is
"fix released" with no-one assigned to.

The install is fresh on a new laptop. I have since switched to the
xorg-bleeding PPA, but this did not fix the problem. I am also now
using the trunk PPA of inkscape, without change of behaviour.

Please advise if more information is needed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081108] Re: Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2013-02-25 Thread NKjoep
Hi,

I'm running ubuntu 12.10 32bit with an Acer Aspire (Intel® Core™
i5-3317U CPU @ 1.70GHz × 4, Intel® Ivybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2)

I can confirm that if you try to use inkscape with disabled touchpad the
whole Xorg crashes.

It's a bad bug. How may I help?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081108] Re: Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2013-02-23 Thread Aldi
Is it somehow possible to increase the bug heat somehow? This is a
terrible bug. In my opinion, it is THE worst case bug that can happen.
Open a SVG, click in Inkscape and all crashes.

In fact, this week I lost work due to this bug. I wanted to quickly
change something small in an SVG with Inkskape. ** Poff ** My work in
LibreOffice, gone, too.

System: Ubuntu 12.10, 64-bit, Inkscape version that comes with Ubuntu,
Thinkpad X220, Intel graphic chip.

2013-02-19 Thread mlavikai
I can also confirm in my Asus Zenbook UX31A that Inkscape crashes while
using external mouse, but only if I have disabled touchpad through
keyboard (fn+F9)

Title:
Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2013-02-17 Thread celiapgt
Hi, I'm not that techie as you are. But try hard.

I experienced the same crash when clicking on working area in Inkscape.
After I read what you had reported about a possible connection between
the touchpad and this bug, I disabled the touchpad-indicator that
freezes my touchpad. Then I started Inkscape, and no crash of Xorg.

I also have a laptop (Toshiba Satellite C845).
Ubuntu 12.10 Gnome-Shell 3.6.2
Inkscape 0.48.3.1 r9886 (29 January 2013)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081108] Re: Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2013-02-16 Thread AleksanderAdamowski
I experience the same problem if I disable the touchpad using Xinput
using this script:

#!/bin/sh
for device in 'PS/2 Mouse' 'ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse' 'AlpsPS/2 ALPS
GlidePoint'; do
  /usr/bin/xinput set-prop "$device" 'Device Enabled' 0
done

It's then enough to launch Inkscape and click on the empty workspace to
have X crash. The stacktrace in Xorg log is the same (even the relative
address offsets are identical).

If I disable the touchpad then reenable it using this script, I can use
Inkscape safely:

#!/bin/sh
for device in 'PS/2 Mouse' 'ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse' 'AlpsPS/2 ALPS
GlidePoint'; do
  /usr/bin/xinput set-prop "$device" 'Device Enabled' 1
done

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081108] Re: Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2013-02-12 Thread Chris Cuming
I am experiencing this bug on a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 420. I have the
touchpad disabled via the Xubuntu settings manager, and I have not
upgraded X using the ppa, so my machine is in the right state for
debugging. I experience the same problem as everyone else: X crashes
immediately when I click the Inkscape workspace. What system information
do we need/commands do I need to run in order to provide useful
debugging output?

Title:
Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2013-02-09 Thread Nils Ole Tippenhauer
I investigated my setup a bit more for reference wrt touchpad:
Afaik, the lenovo X1 carbon does not have a hardware key to disable the
touchpad, I used the Xubuntu settings manager to disable the touchpad. Thus, I
only had the touchpad disabled in software when experiencing the bug. As I
cannot reproduce the bug currently (due to xorg-edgers ppa), I cannot
experiment more on this right now. I removed the ppa, but apt is not offering a
downgrade of the packages, so I don't know how to revert to the buggy state.
Please let me know if I can provide more useful information

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081108] Re: Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2013-02-08 Thread Thomas Radeke
I'm affected as well, using a Dell Inspiron 1720 notebook with Mint 14
MATE. After reading ~suv's comment and the linked one, I had a hunch
what might be causing the crash on my system: I'm running touchpad-
indicator to disable my touchpad while a mouse is attached. The crash
does indeed not occur when the touchpad is active - but as soon as I
disable it and click anywhere in Inkscape, xorg will crash just as
before.

I might be related, but as far a I remember I did not have problems with gimp.
I have the touchpad disabled permanently (do not remember how exactly) and only
use trackpoint.

Is everyone affected here using a laptop? Nicolas, Johannes, Tomasz and
me are apparently. Maybe this reflects popularity of laptops, or it
indicates that there is a correlation :)

"fix released" with no-one assigned to.

The install is fresh on a new laptop. I have since switched to the
xorg-bleeding PPA, but this did not fix the problem. I am also now
using the trunk PPA of inkscape, without change of behaviour.

Please advise if more information is needed.

Possibly one of the actual triggers is still the same as what is described in
this comment of (older) bug #1021517 ("crash depends on the fn-f8 combo to
activate/disable the touchpad"):

2013-02-08 Thread Tomasz Suszko
It appears also on Xubuntu 12.10, 32-bit, Dell Inspiron 7520.

Several days worked properly and, maybe after kind of automatic update,
failed.

I have the same problem with 12.10 fresh installation on my Thinkpad

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081108] Re: Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2012-12-09 Thread Nicolas Le Novere
Thanks to Nils (#6). edgers did the trick. I hope the fix will flow
downstream soon. I am a bit nervous using this ppa :-/

Title:
Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2012-12-07 Thread Tuomas
Copy&paste from wrong, old bug report (2012-12-03): last week (28th
November) I was using inkscape without problems. I tried to downgrade
all ubuntu packages that were upgraded last week, but without success.
Now it does not work at all. My workaround is to use inkscape through
VNC.

Moreover, it seems not to be nvidia driver specific, but appears with nouveau
drivers as well.
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau version 1.0.2-0ubuntu3, Ubuntu 12.10.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081108] Re: Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2012-12-03 Thread Nils Ole Tippenhauer
@ Nicolas: try converting to the xorg-edgers PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

essentially just add this repository:
ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa

and you will get a set of latest xorg-related packets

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081108] Re: Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2012-12-03 Thread Nils Ole Tippenhauer
My workaround with special PPAs works now!

After the last round of upgrades to the special PPAs of inkscape and
xorg, the problem seems to have disappeared - I can click into workspace
without crashing Inkscape

inkscape-trunk:
  Installed: 1:0.48+devel+11922+32~quantal1

xserver-xorg-core:
  Installed:
2:1.13.0.901+git20121123+server-1.13-branch.c0e68f8e-0ubuntu0ricotz~quantal

Please let me know if you need further testing/info

Title:
Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2012-11-28 Thread Nicolas Le Novere
After reading that the bug was fixed on ArchLinux by an upgrade of xorg,
I upgraded xserver-org-core

xserver-xorg-core:
  Installed: 2:1.13.0-0ubuntu6.1

No success. Still crashes. This is terrible for me. I am in the middle
of revising the specifications of a graphical language. Inkscape is
basically the software I use the most after firefox and thunderbird.

Title:
Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Steps to reproduce on my machine:
  1) open inkscape
  2) click anywhere on workspace

  Result:
X dies, back to login prompt

  Expected result:
  nothing should happen

  Details of my setup:

I did not manage to get an Xorg backtrace yet as I don't have a second
maching to do the remote SSH thing.
This bug looks a lot like #1023004, I opened a new one because the old one is
"fix released" with no-one assigned to.

The install is fresh on a new laptop. I have since switched to the
xorg-bleeding PPA, but this did not fix the problem. I am also now
using the trunk PPA of inkscape, without change of behaviour.

Please advise if more information is needed.
