Title:
[HDA-Intel - HDA Intel, playback] volume slider problem, volume reset
to 100% on s/pdif devices after changing default playback.

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I tend to switch default playback between two outputs on the same
soundcard, the s/pdif digital out and 3.55mm headphone jack. I expect
both devices to save their previous output levels from last time i
  used it. This doesn't happen.

If i were to put my output volume on s/pdif out to 50%, and change
my default playback to headphones to then switch back. I would notice
that the sound volume of s/pdif returns to 100%. Basicly reseting,
everytime i switch default playback device.

However, this only occurs if i switch between outputs on the SAME
soundcard. If i were to switch from s/pdif output on my integrated
Intel soundcard, to 3.55mm on my discrete Creative X-Fi Soundcard and
then back. The output volume would still be the same.

It was very easy to reproduce this problem i have, done in atleast 20 seconds.
Just change the output volumes, and switch output on the same soundcard at

Support for 16/20/24-bit SPDIF input and output with up to 192kHz sample
rate offers easy connection of PCs to consumer electronic products such
as digital decoders and speakers.

The ALC889 also features secondary SPDIF-OUT output and converter to
transport digital audio output to a High Definition Media Interface
(HDMI) transmitter.

IEC 958 should be device 1

However, this only occurs if i switch between outputs on the SAME

Just change the output volumes, and switch output on the same soundcard at

spdif in can be changed to n/a Nguyen early patching

Early Patching
 ~~
When CONFIG_SND_HDA_PATCH_LOADER=y is set, you can pass a patch as a firmware
file for modifying the HD-audio setup before initializing the codec. This can
work basically like the reconfiguration via sysfs in the above, but it does it
before the first codec configuration.

A patch file is a plain text file which looks like below:

[codec]
 0x10ed0889 0x10details0175
 485
[model]
auto

[pincfg]
0x1f 0x41c46160

Might just say, the device named HDMI/Display Port is the only device letting
me utilize the integrated s/pdif output.
I am not using the HDMI/Display Port at my gfx card at all.

Title:
[HDA-Intel - HDA Intel, playback] volume slider problem, volume reset
to 100% on s/pdif devices after changing default playback.

Just change the output volumes, and switch output on the same soundcard at
Sound settings in Ubuntu 12.10

do you mean that you are using analog output profile with iec958 default
pcm ON

instead of using digital output profile ?
