Title:
Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 2- Intel HD Graphics 3000 - No screen

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I've tried to install Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 2 on my HP laptop HP 1000-1220LA
Notebook
(http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=uslc=endlc=endocname=c03503799)
 but there's a problem with the video/screen.
My HP laptop comes con Windows 8 preinstalled with UEFI and in order to
install Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 2 I deactivated the secured boot feature of the UEFI.
The screen resolution is 1366 x 768, 32 bits.
First, the graphical installer didn't show, so I modified the CD BOOT Option
Configuration Line using nomodeset and vga=792 (1024x768, 24 bits) (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_BIOS_Extensions#Linux_video_mode_numbers)
 to:

BOOT Options . nomodeset quiet splash --
  vga=792

After, pressing F10 key the graphical install opened and I proceeded
with installation, hoping a dual system. Then, I had to fix the dual
system using refind (www.rodsbooks.com/refind). I know this dual
system is another kind of bug. I'm just telling what I did.

Then, the GRUB screen shows the options to launch Ubuntu 13.04 and Windows 8.
If I select Ubuntu, the screen becomes blank again.
I modified the boot options using nomodeset and vga=792:

 linux /vmlinux-3.8.0-16-generic . nomodeset
  quiet splash $vt_handoff -- vga=792

Which resulted in a command line system. After logging in this command
line system I executed this command to activate the graphical system:

   $sudo startx

But the Org video server is unable to run and shows me this log Xorg.0.log
(Attachment).
I think it is a problem with the xserver-xorg-video-intel package.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1171192] Re: Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 2- Intel HD Graphics 3000 - No screen

2013-05-09 Thread Eder Andrés Ávila Niño
Oh, excuse me. My laptop suffered a fatal error possible due to
mainboard factory failure. It showed the error message 'Thermal Shutdown
Occurred' and I cannot boot it again. Sent to HP support for maintenance
and repair. However, I found this interesting info about HP sometimes
puts glitches to avoid installing another operating systems:

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Notebook-PC-Questions/Startup-Error-
System-Temperature-90D/td-p/158801/page/4

So, I can't continue helping with this thread until I HP checks my
notebook. I don't know if this could be an Ubuntu bug or a Hardware
failure.

Excuse me for this inconvenient. After that, I'll retry this time with
the Ubuntu 13.04 stable release.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1171192] Re: Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 2- Intel HD Graphics 3000 - No screen

2013-04-25 Thread Eder Andrés Ávila Niño
Ubuntu 13.04 Final Release fails to load the graphical installer too.
The LED display turns off after selecting either 'Try Ubuntu' or
'Install Ubuntu'.

Title:
Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 2- Intel HD Graphics 3000 - No screen

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Configuration Line using nomodeset and vga=792 (1024x768, 24 bits) (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_BIOS_Extensions#Linux_video_mode_numbers)
 to:

BOOT Options . nomodeset quiet splash --
  vga=792

However, the problem is not solved yet because booting my laptop in
normal mode gives me no screen, no blink cursor. Still, waiting how to
proceed to fix this problem.

The dmesg still has nomodeset so it is useless. Can you remotely login,
or perhaps try plugging in an external display?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1171192] Re: Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 2- Intel HD Graphics 3000 - No screen

2013-04-23 Thread Eder Andrés Ávila Niño
This is I what I did with the HP laptop's vga port and my Old Samsung
CRT Monitor (http://reviews.cnet.com/crt-monitors/samsung-syncmaster-
591s-crt/4507-3175_7-31312643.html) following the directions on this
video as an example for me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tHruGnmGjY).
So I had a LED display and a CRT display.

1. Connected CRT VGA port to laptop VGA port. Turned on laptop and CRT display.
2. Grub Menu → Ubuntu. That is, booting Ubuntu as normal mode with this Boot
options:

linux /vmlinuz-3.8.0-16-generic root= . ro quiet splash --
vga=792 $vt_handoff

3. A graphical prompt login window appears on both LED and CRT displays.
4. Logged on. LED display turns off. CRT display shows Ubuntu graphical desktop.
5. On my HP laptop I pressed the F4 key to load the Display settings window
with these options:
   ■ Laptop
   □ Samsung 14
   □ Both displays cloned
6. Selected 'Both displays cloned':
   □ Laptop
   □ Samsung 14
   ■ Both displays cloned.
And both LED and CRT diplays show the Ubuntu desktop.
8. Executed $ dmesg file_on_usb_drive
9. Copied /var/log/Xorg.0.log to folder_on_usb_drive.
10. Copied /etc/default/grub to folder_on_usb_drive.
11. Searched on dmesg.log file for nomodeset text string but no matches were
found.

That'all.

I need the logs without nomodeset. nomodeset will not work on your
hardware, so we have to work out what is going wrong with the proper
method.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1171192] Re: Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 2- Intel HD Graphics 3000 - No screen

2013-04-22 Thread Eder Andrés Ávila Niño
First, on Grub menu I selected Ubuntu editing the command line for to ensure
the nomodeset was not added:
linux /vmlinuz-3.8.0-16-generic root= . ro quiet splash -- vga=792
$vt_handoff

But, I got the blank screen again. No terminals. No cursor blink.

So, I tried a root shell prompt this way:

Grun Menu → Advanced Options for Ubuntu → Ubuntu, with linux
3.8.0-generic (recovery mode) → Recovery Menu → root Drop t root shell
prompt.

So I get a root shell:
   root@ederandresan-pc02: ~#_
Where I executed the dmesg and startx commands:

  $ dmesg  file_on_usb_drive
  $ startx

However, the startx was unusual:
Fatal server error: Could not create lock file in /tmp/tX0-lock.
xauth: error in locking authority file /root/.Xauthority

I don't think the Xorg.0.log file was generated as usual.
I've attached these files: dmesg, Xorg.0.log and grub.

The final bug here is that the VESA driver does not work with your EFI
system. Can you please remove nomodeset from the kernel command line and
instead replace it with drm.debug=6. Then please attach the dmesg from
boot and the Xorg.0.log.

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=drm.debug=6 quiet splash -- vga=792
2. Executed $ sudo update-grub. Reboot.
3. On Grub menu I selected Ubuntu without editing the command line: no splash,
then blank screen. Reboot.
4. On Grub menu I selected Ubuntu editing the command line for adding
nomodeset:
linux /vmlinuz-3.8.0-16-generic root= . ro nomodeset quiet splash
-- vga=792 $vt_handoff
Then Splash screen, command line system. Logged in.
5. Executed $ mesg file_on_usb_flash_drive.
6. Executed $ sudo startx.
7. XOrg Fatal error. See XOrg.0.log for details.
However, this time I get this additional error on the console screen:
Xauth: timeout in locking authority file
/home/ederandresan/.Xauthority
Still, command line system. No graphical system.

Title:
Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 2- Intel HD Graphics 3000 - No screen

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Configuration Line using nomodeset and vga=792 (1024x768, 24 bits) (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_BIOS_Extensions#Linux_video_mode_numbers)
 to:

BOOT Options . nomodeset quiet splash --
  vga=792
