I would add here that it's hard to test the issue in other desktop environments since, at least for me, Unity was the only that worked with the DisplayLink device I have (AOC e1649Fwu). I'm currently using a slightly tweaked version of this script[1] to enable the display, and while it works on Unity (but gets slow), it crashes completely on MATE, my preferred desktop environment. I couldn't test in other ones yet, and neither have reported it to MATE devs yet - as I have no idea on how to start the report. Additionally, in my notebook with Intel Graphics 4000 it was a little bit slower but very usable, besides the mouse blinking like crazy, and some Compiz plugins failing (like Enhanced Desktop Zoom, that does not zooms but the cursor disappears while in supposedly higher zoom levels). However, in my work environment, with an unknown onboard videocard, it got so slow I had to stop using the second screen. I'll follow the steps suggested to the others and report two bugs from both computers. I have similar problems using xrandr on a laptop with a dual display LCD 32 TV under Ubuntu 14.04 with Kernel's 3.13.24, 3.13.29, 3.15.1, 3.15.2, 3.15.3, 3.15.4 and 3.15.5. It's improved, but still present. It's most obvious when moving the mouse around because the cursor blinks slightly. There was definitely improvement and it's useable now, although refresh artifacts remain. I also have this problem, but the funny thing is, if I maximize any window on the display link monitor, the issue of choppy mouse movements goes away. I will clarify that dragging a window around is still choppy, but not nearly as bad.. I can confirm that I am seeing the same behavior when using a USB DisplayLink monitor and Unity. I upgraded to a mainline kernel of 3.12 to get it working, and see the flashing mouse and slow graphics behavior. uname -a output is: Linux RJG-Satellite-U945 3.12.0-031200-generic #201311031935 SMP Mon Nov 4 00:36:54 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I will use apport-collect as requested above to submit details. If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . When I desactivate the screen in xRandr, but I keep the displaylink connected, everything work fine. I also tried to take all graphic effect and desktop in compiz setup, stay the same. I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 64 bits and the Kernel 3.11.0-031100rc5-generic I tried also with Kernel 3.10 and 3.9. My Graphic card is a Intel.
