For my use case, I was able to kill gvfsd-mtp after attaching my phone. What I wanted to do still worked, so apparently gvfsd-mtp is not required for my use case. I just experienced this too. If you don't need them, remove the adb files from ubuntu, if you're passing the USB device onto the guest OS, you don't need them anyway.
