Thanks for your hints on how to get the crash logs. My laptop crashed a few more times this morning so I had sufficient opportunity to get logs. Unfortunately Ubuntu is not creating any logs under "/var/crash" neither online (step 2) when this issue occurs (I can however see other log files so generally it works). As you pointed out in step 3 I commented out the related line in my "/etc/apport/crashdb.conf" file but it is still not logging anything there.
