[Desktop-packages] [Bug 241781] Re: hp photosmart 7450 communication problems.
Same issue for me, also on photosmart 7450. I managed to get one test page out of the printer and that's it. What is happening is that the printer disappears from the usb channel. Why it does that I do not know but the computer really cannot communicate to the printer anymore when it is gone. I tried to plug it in on different usb ports but that does not resolve anything. One other strange thing is that it always says Pen cleaning in progress just after switching it on and that status message does not go away. Note that I did install new cartridges with all these issues and was able to get 1 test page out which printed nicely. Another thing is the cartridge for color always indicates as not installed althoug it is and with the test page, it used the colors. I kicked out Windows but a bit too soon I believe... [Desktop-packages] [Bug 241781] Re: hp photosmart 7450 communication problems.
An other feedback with a c4585 here running on vivid and/or utopic/precise i386: - same issue as described - i get around by unplug/plug the usb cord so im thinking about how the 'usb' device is monitored: - at the login session (gnome-shell here) the hp printer is well identified (icon in the systray for a few seconds then disappear) - when a print job is sent later, the printer does not awake: need to unplug/plug the usb cord, then i need to reload the printing job, choose the printer, then the job is done. But then the printer is again deactivated and the next print job needs the previous workaround. That is; so as i understand, sending a print job SHOULD also first reinitiate the device to make it active. Is it a udev/systemd/script/else missing/not implemented mandatory job ? (seems not be a hplip issue per se) ** Tags added: utopic vivid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to hplip in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/241781 Title: hp photosmart 7450 communication problems. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 241781] Re: hp photosmart 7450 communication problems.
This seems to be a wake-up problem on some (probably older) printer models. Usually, a printer should wake up from power-saving mode simply by sending a job (or even any kind of status or ink level request) to the printer, a special wake-up command should not be needed. But one never knows whether there are printers needing a wake-up command or printers with a hardware/firmware bug. Can someone of the HPLIP developers at HP have a look into this and perhaps let HPLIP somehow precede print jobs with some wake-up command, at least for printer groups where this is needed or even to all printers where it is safe? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to hplip in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/241781 Title: hp photosmart 7450 communication problems. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 241781] Re: hp photosmart 7450 communication problems.
miketheday, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Karmic reached EOL on April 30, 2011. See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases Is this an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal: apport-collect 241781 ** Project changed: hplip = hplip (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: hplip (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete ** Changed in: hplip (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to hplip in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/241781 Title: hp photosmart 7450 communication problems. Status in hplip package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: My HP photosmart 7450 printer has been showing some communication problems since using Hardy. Prior to this, I've been running Debian stable on exactly the same hardware without any printer problems. The symptoms are: printer is detected as photosmart 7400 appears to install correctly. I can sometimes initially print one or two pages, then it locks up completely, I get a pop-up notice on the top panel about printer supplies low (although it isn't). At this point, the printer firmware appears to have hung - it doesn't respond to front-panel button presses the only way to get it to respond is to pull the power supply for a few seconds. On reconnecting, it sometimes prints, sometimes doesn't. I've tried uninstalling the hplip package and installing the latest version (2.8.5) from the hp website. It didn't make any difference, the symptoms are unchanged. It looks like there's another user with the same problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=809469highlight=photosmart+7450 Following the advice from the debugging printer problems page: mike@badger:~$ lsmod |grep usb usb_storage73664 0 libusual 19108 1 usb_storage usblp 15872 0 usbhid 31872 0 hid38784 1 usbhid usbcore 146028 8 usb_storage,libusual,usblp,usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd scsi_mod 151436 5 usb_storage,sg,sr_mod,sd_mod,libata mike@badger:~$ tail -f /var/log/messages Jun 20 20:24:37 badger kernel: [ 476.217222] scsi 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense not available.
