[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1142947] [NEW] epiphany-browser crashed with SIGSEGV in Decoder()

2013-03-03 Thread John S. Gruber
Public bug reported:

Crash on browsing watching youtube video from http://ubuntuonair.com.
Expected it to play the whole hangout video but played less than a
minute. After restarting the browser it crashed again with another
random video off youtube in less than 10 seconds.

Also fails on lernid, which I'm testing, and midori--all webkit
browsers.

Running today's live i386 CD from raring. (Today == 2013-3-3).

No flash installed and therefore I assume that it is using html 5.

Bug description:
Crash on browsing watching youtube video from http://ubuntuonair.com.
Expected it to play the whole hangout video but played less than a
minute. After restarting the browser it crashed again with another
random video off youtube in less than 10 seconds.

Also fails on lernid, which I'm testing, and midori--all webkit
  browsers.

Running today's live i386 CD from raring. (Today == 2013-3-3).

No flash installed and therefore I assume that it is using html 5.
Running flash in lernid and midori avoids the problem as webkit seems
to use it in preference to html5--but that's just my guess.

  To reproduce:

  Install raring
  **Don't install flash**
Install ephiphany with 'sudo apt-get install epiphany-browser'
  Start epiphany from the terminal with "epiphany http://ubuntuonair.com/#video";
Start the video and wait for the video to stop (coincident with the halt in
the video within a minute).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1142947] Re: epiphany-browser crashed with SIGSEGV in Decoder()

2013-03-07 Thread John S. Gruber
Debdiff with the patch from webkit upstream Filip Pizlo. See the webkit
bug above. Before the patch was applied I could often trigger the
segfault. After applying it to my system the problem I was no longer
able to trigger the fault.

There is an i386 build in my ppa. The build log is at
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/133296050/buildlog_ubuntu-
raring-i386.webkit_1.10.2-0ubuntu2_UPLOADING.txt.gz . The PPA is
ppa:jsjgruber/ppa . The uploaded version is 1.10.2-0ubuntu2.

Neither lp: webkit nor lp:ubuntu/webkit appear to be up-to-date.

** Patch added: "Debdiff for 1.10.2-0ubuntu2 with webkit patch from Filip Pizlo"

Bug description:
Crash on browsing watching youtube video from http://ubuntuonair.com.
Expected it to play the whole hangout video but played less than a minute.
After restarting the browser it crashed again with another random video off
youtube in less than 10 seconds. It appears to matter which video, or has
another intermittent effect.The last failing
  video I've found is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir2TdfSwH8g.

Also fails on lernid, which I'm testing, and midori--both also webkit

Install ephiphany with 'sudo apt-get install epiphany-browser'
Start epiphany from the terminal with "epiphany

Start the video and wait for the video to stop (coincident with the halt in

2013-04-28 Thread John S. Gruber
Adolfo--

I'm having the same trouble as the original problem reporter, as are
others. Turning blur off is only a small improvement to readability.

Please see http://askubuntu.com/questions/285525/dash-background-blur-
problem for confirmation and for a picture of the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1142947] Re: webkit--epiphany-browser crashed with SIGSEGV in Decoder()

2013-04-12 Thread John S. Gruber
Thanks, Brian, for looking at this and offering to look at it again
before Raring release.

I'm sure you are right that not many people are presently affected--
firefox is widely used and chromium-browser uses its own Javascript
engine. For those using straight webkit I think only the i386
architecture doesn't use the Low Level Interpreter and therefore only it
is affected. If the LLINT is enabled the present code already creates
the structure in the DFG::ShouldProfile case. (See line 811 of
Source/JavaScriptCore/jit/JIT.cpp. for where the situation is
categorized).

I'm maintaining Lernid and the current Lernid and from the current
classes I'd say Lernid isn't used with youtube often (if at all).
However I have readied a release for support of ubuntuonair which uses
hangouts, and therefore youtube. The first time I tested it I got this
crash. I can't release Lernid with this bug outstanding in the soon-to-
be current Ubuntu release. I gather this release is also in quantal-
proposed.

Please see https://bugs.launchpad.net/lernid/+bug/1130454 filed by an
ubuntuonair organizer and Liz from the Ubuntu classroom team. The
blueprint is at https://blueprints.launchpad.net/lernid/+spec/support-
ubuntu-onair .

I believe this problem will be resolved when upstream releases r144137
for gtk. It makes the relevant test include the additional alternative,
if I read it correctly. It's too complex for me to feel comfortible
proposing for cherry picking.

I've added the patch headers you've requested and hope that they are
alright.

Also fails on lernid, which I'm testing, and midori--both also webkit
  browsers.

Running today's live i386 CD from raring. (Today == 2013-3-3).

No flash installed and therefore I assume that it is using html 5.
Running flash in lernid and midori avoids the problem as webkit seems
to use it in preference to html5--but that's just my guess.

  To reproduce:

  Install raring
  **Don't install flash**
Install ephiphany with 'sudo apt-get install epiphany-browser'
Start epiphany from the terminal with "epiphany
"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir2TdfSwH8g
Start the video and wait for the video to stop (coincident with the halt in
the video within a minute).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 532047] Re: Plymouth text-mode splash causes X to crash on first run due to shared tty7

2013-05-13 Thread John S. Gruber
@Niccolo

Welcome.

I don't think this old bug report is a way to get this problem solved as
it is already closed. Since you have already looked for a current bug
report and can't find one I'd suggest you file a new one yourself.
Please don't be shy. I'd suggest you use the approach at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting since `ubuntu-bug xorg` will collect
a lot of pertinent information automatically. That page has lots of
useful advice.

WRT your question about viewing your xorg log files yourself, I would
would suggest starting gedit and navigate to /var/log/ and the files you
want to examine. askubuntu.com is great for getting answers to this kind
of question, by the way. Here on Launchpad is the best place to get bugs
worked on.

@Jorge

The message about the quit signal is just like the ones that occurred
with this sort of bug. It might be good to see if there is an error in
the still older xorg log.

@Both

I think closed bugs don't appear on developers' lists so a new bug
report is much better, as Steve Langasek suggested to someone above. In
addition gdm was involved in this old bug but now lightdm is used for
the sign on screen so this really is a brand new bug even though there
are probably events in common and the symptoms are the same.

If you are both having the same problem on Precise perhaps one of you
can file the bug and the other can mark it as affecting him as well .
You both should attach the logs produced by `ubuntu-bug xorg` to help
move the bug toward triaging.

Thanks.

Title:
Plymouth text-mode splash causes X to crash on first run due to shared
  tty7

Status in X.Org X server:
  Invalid
Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: plymouth

Lucid adopted the Plymouth graphical splash service that uses the
Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) facilities to provide a flicker-free
graphical splash during start-up. For older video chipsets and drivers
(e.g. intel i815) that *do not* support KMS plymouth falls back to
using a text console (using the text plugin). It attaches to tty7 and
outputs Linux terminfo control codes to draw a colour progress-bar at
  the bottom of the display.

There is an unfortunate interaction between plymouth and X. X also
uses tty7. When the X/GDM log-in screen appears for the first time
plymouth is still running. A script triggers a quit message to the
plymouth daemon. It seems that plymouth is waiting for either the "2"
key or "Enter" key to be pressed, whereupon a SIGQUIT (signal 3) is
sent to tty7. This causes both plymouth *and* X to terminate.

So, if a password contains "2" or the user logs in by pressing "Enter"
after typing their password, the user experience is that X 'crashes'
(however, gdb reveals that X receives SIGQUIT).

Some stray plymouth control codes can be witnessed on tty7 if X is
stopped and tty7 console is on-screen.

Upstart (/sbin/init) then restarts gdm (which launches X) and the
  second session performs correctly.

*** A temporary workaround is to disable the plymouth-splash upstart
  job ***

  sudo mv /etc/init/plymouth-splash.conf /etc/init/plymouth-
  splash.conf.disabled

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 737679] Re: topics in rooms do not update or sometimes display

2012-02-25 Thread John S. Gruber
I cannot reproduce this problem in Empathy 3.3.5.

The problem appears to be addressed in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23151 in upstream
Telepathy, and corrected with
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=658542 in Empathy. Marking as
such.

As lernid uses the older python bindings lacking the new interfaces
added in Telepathy, rather than using introspection to find to
Telepathy, it is tougher to fix there.

I suggest that you attach the last several Xorg.n.log's from /var/log in
order to look for why the X server would have crashed.

Title:
Unity/LightDM session crashes - login screen appears

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Almost each time I login to Unity using LightDM after some time (from
5 min to about 2-3 hours) my session crashes and I am taken to the
login lightdm screen again. It does not matter what applications are
running - sometimes I get it when I have only the browser running,
sometimes during playing a video and sometimes when doing something in
  Eclipse.

It started about 2-3 weeks ago.

The only trace in the logs I was able to find is:
[+1980.37s] DEBUG: Process 1391 exited with return value 1
  [+1980.37s] DEBUG: X server stopped
  [+1980.37s] DEBUG: Removing X server authority /var/run/lightdm/root/:0

  [+1980.49s] DEBUG: Using VT 7
  [+1980.49s] DEBUG: Logging to /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log
[+1980.49s] DEBUG: Writing X server authority to /var/run/lightdm/root/:0

[+1980.78s] DEBUG: Got signal from X server :0

Unfortunately I was not able what was process 1391 in that case. Maybe
the attached logs will help you discover it.

I am able to reproduce it so if you need any additional logs I should
be able to get them right after the next crash.

Is plymouth still running on VT7 when this happens to you? (plymouth is
the splash screen process and it is usually started on vt7 before
lightdm is started).

Bug description:
After signing put from a user session in unity, lightdm should load but
currently it does not. By checking Xorg.0.log and lightdm.log I can see

  -
This is apparently caused by the use of SSE2 instructions in new versions of
adobe flash binaries, but only on older CPU's not implementing SSE2. There is
an upstream bug reported for this:
https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3161034

Note that this code is binary only outside of Adobe.

Where lernid, and apparently epiphany-browser use webkit they don't
catch SIGILL. Both crash and close with the message "Illegal
  Instruction" sent to the console.

Status in A full-featured IRC connection manager for telepathy.:

Status in “lernid” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed
Status in “telepathy-idle” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Lernid suggests that the Internet connection be reestablished, but
  that's no help.

The problem is that a registered nick can be locked at the server for
a while after an attempt is made to use it without either using a
password, or when supplying an incorrect one. Telepathy does not
recognize this freenode nickserv behaviour and Lernid cannot
distinguish between this situation and a network connection problem.

The message from the server that telepathy-idle lacks from its parsing table
is:
  :niven.freenode.net 437 * userid :Nick/channel is temporarily unavailable

After no attempt is to react to this for a while, this message is issued and
the connection is closed by the server end:
ERROR :Closing Link: adsl-sb-067-061.wcnet.org (Connection timed out)

If this 437 error were reported as a nick error to the application
program, Lernid (or other application program) could try logging on
  with a different nick.

The nick is again usable after the server finishes the unavailability
time and the student can then again logon using the nick as long as
  the correct password is issued.

The problem only happens if the nick has "enforce" set on with
nickserv, but this is common. Unfortunately only one faulty attempt to
use a protected nick is enough to trigger this problem.

Lernid may be able to circumvent this problem, at some cost, by always
signing on to nick with a random component, and then trying to switch
to the correct nick after the connection has been completed.
