Title:
  Folder names in Location area keeps the width (13.10)

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Folder names in Location area keeps the width even though when I go back to
upper folder.
  First of all this new downgraded nautilus folder section holds its width and
I cannot even change the width at all.
  Then when I go deep down lower folders or open folder with long name, it
would squeeze down the Name part and I cannot even see names anymore. Then
when I go up to upper folder or root, I cannot see the names anymore becaue
location column takes up all the space. Once I click one of the unseen folder,
I may see the names again.
  This is one of too many problems of 13.10.

  After upgrading to 13.10, click and drag acts very badly. This is one of
many issues.
  When I click a file /a folder to move then move over to a(any) folder, a

  Killing Transmission doesn't affect anything. I'm not sure there is a
  relation between Transmission and this issue, I just mention it
  because I only leave my computer on overnight when I download
  torrents.

I have the same problem. It seems that it only appears when the network

Title:
  Libreoffice and GVFS problem opening files on a Windows share

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi all,
  I have problems opening ODT, ODS and other Libreoffice files on a Windows
share. The problem is that using PCManFM (LXDE default filemanager), double
clicking on a file cause Libreoffice to starts, but the process suddenly
terminate.

  I found that this is caused by GVFS's file URI (eg: smb://...) not
  being recognized by Libreoffice (yes, I installed the gtk and gnome
  integration packages). So LIbreoffice try to open the file but it
  can't and so it immediatly exits.

  The solution is simple: launch Libreoffice passing the %F (filepath)
  parameter and _not_ the %U (URI) one. It can be done simply modifying
  the libreoffice-*.desktop launchers in /usr/share/applications.

  Please note that, using Nautilus, the problem does not shows because
  Nautilus appear to always pass filepath, and not URI, to Libreoffice
  (and to other applications, probably).

  Steps to reproduce:
  - create a windows share and copy a ODT, ODS or any other Libreoffice file on
it;
  - browse the share with PCManFM and double click on the Libreoffice file;
  - you will see Libreoffice starting but it will sudden exits.

  Steps to workaround:
  - go in /usr/share/applications;
  - edit the various libreoffice-*.desktop substituting the line
Exec=libreoffice %U with Exec=libreoffice %F;
  - browse the share with PCManFM and double click on the Libreoffice file;
  - you will now be able to open the file with Libreoffice.

  Regards.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1847196] Re: BackendException: PyDrive backend requires PyDrive installation

Well 19.10 came as an upgrade to my machine and broke the Backup. Looks
like PyDrive is not a package that could be installed from apt
repositories, so I'm stuck without ability to backup\restore files,
which is sad.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1186702]

2020-04-20 Thread Vladislav-kuzma
Linux Ubuntu: 16.04
LibreOffice: 5.1.4.2

After installing LibreOffice url links with protocol vnd.sun.star.webdav aren't
bound to LibreOffice.
After appending libreoffice-startcenter.desktop file property MimeType with
x-scheme-handler/vnd.sun.star.webdav, it starts opening url links correctly
with LibreOffice.

Title:
  WebDAV: LibreOffice does not handle vnd.sun.star.webdav protocol out-
  of-the-box

Status in LibreOffice:
  Confirmed
Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Libreoffice is able to open documents located on a WebDAV server if provided
with an URL starting with the vnd.sun.star.webdav protocol.
  (for instance: vnd.sun.star.webdav://example.com/webdav/my-document.odt )

  Unfortunately, after installing Libreoffice on Ubuntu these URL aren't still
handled correctly.
  Whether you click on a link in your browser or you try to open the URL from
the command line with xdg-open vnd.sun.star.webdav://... you get a message
saying that this protocol is unknown.

  What I expected was that LibreOffice would start and would open the
  document.

  A workaround is to create a Desktop file with the following informations:
  [Desktop Entry]
  Name=WebDav LibreOffice
  Exec=/usr/bin/libreoffice %u
  Type=Application
  Terminal=false
  Categories=System;
  MimeType=x-scheme-handler/vnd.sun.star.webdav;

  and then to copy it in /usr/share/applications
  Afterwards you have to run sudo update-desktop-database so that Ubuntu will
take the new protocol into account.

  A more definitive solution would be to modify the libreoffice-base
  Desktop file that comes with libreoffice (also located in
  /usr/share/applications) to add the MimeType properties described
  above.

Bug description:
  Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
  other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

  Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
  others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding.
  As it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP
  headsets using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at
  this time.

  The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

  Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it
  appears that there are quite a lot of differences considering they
  have developed their own audio server solution etc.

  The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in
  May 2011 -
  https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

  Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel
  and PulseAudio:

  PulseAudio: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/245272/
  Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

  It appears that the Chromium OS team applied the same kernel patch:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1813441] Re: Can no longer drag and drop files between desktop and applications

2021-03-12 Thread Vladislav K. Valtchev
Guys, this is a *BRUTAL* regression. It's NOT acceptable to break the
desktop experience like that in a LTS release because "the legacy code
was unmaintainable". Either replace the legacy code with a mature, well-
written extension which works *exactly* the same way, or continue to
maintain the old dirty (whatever) code, until you have a VALID
replacement.

You're *under-estimating* the impact of such a bug. Desktop icons have
been "a thing" for the last 30 years or so and are the first thing any
user sees. And I'm not talking only about non-technical people: I'm
talking about people like me that have been using Linux since 1998. Now,
not only arrow keys and drag'n'drop don't work, but even just creating
or deleting a file on the desktop causes an ugly refresh. Sometimes,
just moving an icon causes the whole gnome shell to crash.

I was hoping this bug would be fixed ASAP after the 20.04 release or, at
most, for the 20.10 release, but still nothing. And, no, I don't wanna
use dirty workarounds which will break on upgrade. I'd like an
officially-supported fix.

For instabilities like these "the world" stopped using KDE 4 and
switched to GNOME. Even MANY years later now, with KDE perfectly stable
etc., people still use GNOME. Do you really want to loose the desktop
segment? People will stop using Ubuntu for things like that.

This bug's "Importance" should be: "VERY HIGH", not "Medium".

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1813441] Re: Can no longer drag and drop files between desktop and applications

2021-03-13 Thread Vladislav K. Valtchev
Hi Jonathan,

I'm happy to start a dialogue about this issue.

1. It's great to hear that the problem will be fixed in 21.04. Maybe a
backport to the 20.04 LTS should be considered as well?

2. I know, I don't have problems with fixing things by myself, per se.
I'm irritated that this was not a "corner case" that a few will people
will even notice. It's a "show stopper" bug. I'm criticizing the
*decision making* here.

3. Yes, I realize that's GNOME's fault. So, the solution was to simply
stick to the older version of GNOME, wasn't it? It's a BAD idea to
upgrade to the latest version of XYZ, when it's broken, in particular
when we're talking about an LTS release, that's supposed to be super-
stable. That's simply *bad judgement*. Of course Canonical cannot fix
every GNOME bug, I totally agree. I'm a very practical person. Just,
don't upgrade the package; it's simple as that. A Linux distribution
maintainers' main job is choose carefully which version each software
package to include in the distro. The typical questions are: "is the
package XYZ stable enough for our release?", "shall we use libxyz 1.23
instead of libxyz 1.22 to fix the problem PR123, but risking to break
something else?".

Also, did "desktop-icons-ng-ding" exist in 2020 before the release of
the LTS? Not a rhetorical question, I honestly don't know. If it did,
than the LTS should have included it. Otherwise, the LTS should have
just used the older version of GNOME. No matter how you put it, no
technical reason justifies breaking this way the user interface. Again,
if it were something affecting < 1% of the users, I would have
understood. But not in this case. It's not a glitch hidden somewhere,
it's one of the first things people notice after installing Ubuntu. I
noticed it in a matter of minutes. It's *NOT* a problem of resources,
it's a decision-making problem.

Vlad

2021-03-13 Thread Vladislav K. Valtchev
@dundir Maybe you're right, I don't know.
I just tried to do what I believed is best for Ubuntu, the distro I've been
using since 2008 or so: to speak out giving my feedback, hoping it will be
heard by the right people. If things won't change I'll look elsewhere, clearly.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1813441] Re: Can no longer drag and drop files between desktop and applications

2021-03-13 Thread Vladislav K. Valtchev
You're failing to understand the concept of "show-stopper" bug, also known as
"ship-stopper".
The severity of such a bug is so big, that the whole release a product must be
postponed, until the bug is fixed. Bugs of this kind are ones that
substantially compromise the usability of a product. For example, a bug in a
browser's rendering engine that doesn't allow a single major website (social
networks, search engines etc.) to render correctly. Millions of people won't
use that browser because of that. Another example? A GCC bug that doesn't allow
the Linux kernel to compile or, even worse, compiles but generates incorrect
instructions and the kernel doesn't boot. Even if that C compiler had a TON of
new and cool features and it was 200% faster than its predecessor, would you
allow it to be released knowing the you cannot compile Linux? I wouldn't, never.

Most of the time, we make trade-offs, both in software development and in
release management as well. For example? We've fixed 100 bugs at the price of
introducing 5 new ones. That's fine, generally. BUT, some bugs are critical and
cannot even be put in the equation. I don't need the whole "decision tree" for
that. Such bugs, have priority above everything else combined. The 10,000 new
features of KDE 4 were worthless, compared to the fact that it was not stable
and crashed the whole time. I wanted so much to use it at the time, because it
was so cool and visually pleasing. But, at the end I gave up because of its
instability and switched to GNOME.
A car is *worthless* if its breaking system doesn't work. A compromise can be
made when the breaking system is relatively worse than the one in the previous
model, but it's still working, it's still doing an acceptable job.

So, how to decide which bugs are show-stoppers? Well, there are user
experience people, product managers, VPs etc, but ultimately, such a
decision is SUBJECTIVE. I have no "mathematical proof" that this was a
show-stopper bug, neither do you that this wasn't. I expressed my
opinion, trying to make the Ubuntu leadership to reconsider such
decision making. Maybe I failed, maybe I didn't. But if nobody makes
criticism, it's almost impossible for the leadership to get a feedback
and improve its decision-making. At the end, given users' feedback, I
hope Ubuntu leaders will ask themselves: "was that the right call to
make?". Maybe, just maybe, the next time they'll be more conservative
when releasing an LTS.
