2019-06-25 Thread Ivan Grgurina
Top 2 in descending order:
1) 2C - has by far the best font combination that works very well with the
picture
2) 5B, but with the simple font of 5A - again: simple, elegant

I like the design of 5b too, but with the font of 4a.
Changing the background color of the website should be easy.

Here is the updated link with the candidate logos:
https://github.com/zabetak/calcite/blob/calcite-logo/site/img/index.md

Let's follow Julian's suggestion and start the nomination process for the
next 48 hours.

Personally, the ones that I like the most are:
https://github.com/zabetak/calcite/blob/calcite-logo/site/img/index.md#candidate-5b
https://github.com/zabetak/calcite/blob/calcite-logo/site/img/index.md#candidate-5e

They are exactly the same just with different colours which makes sense if
we want to use them in different places:
5b would look nice in presentations while 5e would fit well with the
existing colors of our website.

Actually there are more than six since "v" stands for variant rather than
version.
I think it is worth including the rest since in various cases some of the
final variants did not end-up so well.

2019-06-25 Thread Michael Mior
Below are the logos Stamatis kindly collected on his branch. Since
there are only six, perhaps we can just proceed with a vote? Although
I'm fine if we want to go through the nomination process as well. I
like your point Julian that we can still make final tweaks once we
decide on a logo, so whatever the process is, we should keep that in
mind.

Re: Giving the Calcite logo some love

2019-06-25 Thread Julian Hyde
About process. I propose the following:

Over the next 2 days, people can nominate one logo by replying to this email
with the URL of their choice.

Michael then starts a vote between the top 3 (or the top 2, if there are a lot
of ties for 3rd place).

After we have decided on a logo, we can still ask the author to make final
tweaks to that logo.

https://github.com/zabetak/calcite/blob/calcite-logo/site/img/logo-alt2-v1.svg
if the hammer can be smaller :)

I created a branch to gather all alternative logos [1].

Among the two aforementioned proposals, I added a few more variants (check
logo-alt* under the img directory).
Have a look and let me know what you think. I'm open to any ideas and
suggestions.

Thanks for digging this out Daniel!

At this point we have two candidates:
http://humbedooh.com/calcite-proposed.svg
https://svgshare.com/s/86r

Do we like any of above more than our current logo (the way they are or
with slight modifications) ?

Yes indeed!

If someone feels inspired to produce a logo, here’s my suggestion of a
theme/image: a spider, specifically a Barn Spider (Araneus Cavaticus)[1]. It
was the origin of the name “avatica”, connects and spins webs, and the
eponymous individual in Charlotte’s Web had rather exceptional communication
skills.

How about something like the following:

Minimal presence of drop-shadow just to keep a bit the birefringence effect
and text next to the shape.

2018-08-27 Thread Vladimir Sitnikov
Daniel, I like what you do, and I wonder if you could reduce the level of
fine details (number of colours, number of fine lines) in the logos.
calcite-proposed.svg definitely looks better than the current logo.
proposal2 is somewhat comparable to the current logo (since proposal2 uses
colors and/or fine lines, and it makes logo barely recognizable at the
small scale).

I wonder if we could depict something around
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSqqD3dy8BmMeEUJQaeOYTp_4Bdvq-2Xz_EXCqIXVMQjmfK5QJbSA
or
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSEqCuAxcDMtlvCKEiGftOSxZq-3dNN7knuOHerpj39g2IIYqdg

I mean to end up in a couple of simple graphical primitives.

PS. I wish I could draw.

Everyone, please be sure to cc Daniel when you reply to this thread. (He is
making the same offer to a lot of projects and understandably he does not want
to subscribe to all of their dev lists.)

Definitely agreed that the logo could use some love. I like what you've
done with the type in the logo and I also like Julian's suggestion of
refraction. I'll see what I can do over the next couple days about
combining those two things.

Re: Giving the Calcite logo some love

2018-08-26 Thread Julian Hyde
Thanks for kicking this off, Daniel. Let me say up front that I think
your proposed logo is much better than the current logo. Especially
the clarity of design, and the choice of font. If we can't come up
with a better alternative shortly (i.e. in this thread), I think we
should vote on adopting it. I would vote for it.

That said, if we're going to change the logo, let's give people a
couple of days to submit other options.

The reason I chose the name Calcite (and the previous name, Optiq) was
because refraction (specifically birefringence) suggests elegance and
economy of purpose. Query planning is about working smarter, not
harder, and the hammer in Daniel's proposed logo suggests brute force.

So, I refer you to the previous thread on the subject of logos, about
2 years ago [1]. And here is a nice picture of birefringence [2]; my
awful hand-drawn sketches in the logo thread were alluding to that. If
those sources inspire people to create some more logo options for us
to vote on, I would be delighted.

Julian

I don't know the tool name you've put there but I guess the message you're
trying to deliver is: We dissect bulks of data to bring up useful
information.

I'm probably wrong. We also need to think about the reason behind choosing
the name: Calcite. So the final logo would make sense.

What do you think ?

Giving the Calcite logo some love

2018-08-26 Thread Daniel Gruno

Hello, awesome Calcite people!

As some of you may know, I'm on an arduous mission of gathering and
touching up all logos we have at Apache. During this task, I realized
the calcite logo has some flaws that does not make it super fit for
print, so perhaps it's time to look for a new logo?

I did a quick proposal, figuring "calcite...minerals...mining!" - if I'm
completely off track, let me know :D Anyway, the proposal is at:

http://www.apache.org/logos/comdev-test/res/calcite/calcite-proposed.svg

(current logo is found at
http://www.apache.org/logos/comdev-test/#calcite for reference)

If you like it, it's hereby ALv2 so feel free to use it.
If you want changes, or maybe a logo contest, that's also a-okay! Just
let me know if you have feedback, and remember to CC me if so, as I'm
not on this mailing list.

With warm regards,
Daniel.
