Exactly, so it's best not to include that information.

Isn't it simpler to leave the PMC RDF with all the other ones since
it's best to leave it alone?

Re: Ensure all projects have DOAP RDP files in place

2019-04-24 Thread Christofer Dutz
Hi Sebb,

Well there are two types of RDF files.
One for the committee/PMC and one for the project (DOAP)

While the committee needs regular updating if it contains the PMC and the Chair

The project needs regular updating for releases and stuff like that (and in
case of PLC4X, the supported languages)
We just moved both together to keep things simple.

Doesn't really matter where they are, it just seems they are usually not
maintained as it might be a little in transparent what files exist, where all
files are located, which information is needed for what and what has to be
updated in which situation. Was quite a ride in preparation of PLC4X graduation
to find out which files in which repos were required to be updated to update
the information of the different parts of our infrastructure.

This is really good stuff. Thanks for taking the time to write this.

I expect that Sally would be glad to shepherd this onto the main Apache
blog. This looks like the kind of article that she tends to be looking for.

I would appreciate if someone from more experienced Apache fellows can

Would it be possible to re-post this blog in 'success at Apache' series?

Nice stuff. Consider emphasizing non-code contributions a bit more:
mentioning testing, docs, and simply answering questions on lists are
also good ways to start working towards committership.

There is no need to create a local PMC description RDF file.
Most TLPs use the ones at

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/comdev/projects.apache.org/trunk/data/committees/

If yours does not exist yet, just create it and add it to committees.xml
There is a template for this purpose:

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/comdev/projects.apache.org/trunk/data/committees/_template.rdf

To avoid duplication and staleness of data, it's best not to use the
PMC RDF files for anything but the minimum, i.e.
id, name and charter

Unfortunately experience shows they still get forgotten, particularly
the PMC file (as noted above).

Re: [TIME SENSITIVE] ASF at OpenExpo/Madrid?

2019-04-24 Thread Sally Khudairi
Thanks, Jim. That's good to know!

They didn't know if we were committed for a booth or talks or anything ...it
was a bit awkward. Yes, there'd been a changing of the guard with the marketing
team a few years back (hello, initial eCatalogue fiasco!), and an overall
scheduling disconnect that makes participation challenging.

As for Ignasi's statement of having to continually answer the "Why are you
here?" question, Jim, you and I have had our fair share of that over the past 2
decades ...it's a common one, and would likely help drive specific
messaging/promotional materials for the less "usual suspect" events such as
this.

Something to consider when planning for future events.

Kind regards,
Sally

this year? I don't see it listed at http://community.apache.org/calendars/
(I might be looking in the wrong place)

They are asking me (again) about cross promotion, and I won't be getting
involved unless we're at the event. Do we plan on speaking? Having a booth?

 Many thanks,
 Sally

Re: [TIME SENSITIVE] ASF at OpenExpo/Madrid?

2019-04-24 Thread Sally Khudairi
Thanks, Kevin and Ignasi.

Each year seems to become more compressed. The urgency associated with their
request --8-10 weeks away from the event-- indicates a bit of a scramble going
on.

OK, I'll confirm that this is a "sorry, no" for 2019 and move on.

Kind regards,
Sally

Yeah, next year I will submit a cfp and maybe we can get an earlier notice
for the ebook and others. This year just seemed very compressed and I
would like to help their efforts more.

Sorry for 2nd email,

By re-post, I meant not a citation of this blog, but re-use of the text of

If it is possible to whom I could contact to prepare a post?

There is no need to create a local PMC description RDF file.
Most TLPs use the ones at
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/comdev/projects.apache.org/trunk/data/committees/

If yours does not exist yet, just create it and add it to committees.xml
There is a template for this purpose:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/comdev/projects.apache.org/trunk/data/committees/_template.rdf

To avoid duplication and staleness of data, it's best not to use the
PMC RDF files for anything but the minimum, i.e.
id, name and charter

Unfortunately experience shows they still get forgotten, particularly
the PMC file (as noted above).

Blog Post 'How To Become Committer' - feedback needed

2019-04-24 Thread Dmitriy Pavlov
Hi Community Developers,

Recently we've translated a blog post based on my recent talk on Apache
Ignite meetup/Moscow:
https://www.gridgain.com/resources/blog/how-become-open-source-committer-and-why-youd-want

I would appreciate if someone from more experienced Apache fellows can
provide some comments to this post (actually, this one is based on previous
feedback from Shane C.).

Would it be possible to re-post this blog in 'success at Apache' series?

Sincerely,
Dmitriy Pavlov

Ensure all projects have DOAP RDP files in place

2019-04-24 Thread Christofer Dutz
Hi all,

I’m involved in the IoT track for ACNA and ACEU and was trying to use [1] to
find all Apache in the IoT space. At the time I first visited that page, the
Apache Ignite project was the only project to be listed there … now the PLC4X
and Camel have been added, but it seems most projects are not maintaining their
RDP files correctly.

It would be cool if some people could help with fixing this issue for the
projects they are involved with.

Perhaps as a little help. I did the following for the PLC4X project:

  1. Created the two RDF files (PMC description [2] and Project description
[3]) which are published through our project website and are available at [4]
and [5].
  2. Registered them in the committees.xml and the projects.xml files here [6]
  3. Wait at most 24 hours

Perhaps if you use these as templates, it helps get the files up and running.

The main reason we chose to maintain these files in our project, is that I have
seen quite a lot of projects without maintained RDF files, because they are so
invisible to most of the folks … if for example you have a look at the Flex ref
file [7], it still mentions Alex as chair, which isn’t the case anymore for
more than 2 years now.
Our hope is by managing these resources as part of the normal project, they get
a little more visibility and awareness.

Re: [TIME SENSITIVE] ASF at OpenExpo/Madrid?

2019-04-24 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Given that there has been no feedback in the other thread apart from mine,
I think we are not going to be there this year.

The event has a clear focus on business and open source is becoming kind of
a marketing vehicle for them. As I said before if this event becomes a
truly relevant one, I think it would make sense for us to be there and
share our vision on open source, but it is still far from being there.
There is still some value in being there sharing our vision and explaining
what the ASF is, as there was quite a lot of people coming to the booth in
the past editions, but I don't think it is worth the effort for a single
person given how the event is shaped today. At least I don't see _just
myself_ the entire day staying at the booth answering "why is the ASF in
this event?" and similar questions.

Re: Help with task: Ensure all Apache TLPs have Wikipedia pages

2019-04-24 Thread Swapnil M Mane
Hi Corey,

Thank you for your interest in the help task.
Please follow these steps to help us in this task.

We have created a Google sheet [1] (edit access to are provided you)
containing the list of all Apache's top level projects.
Please check, is the Wikipedia page exist for that particular project, if
yes put the link of page else put the appropriate comment and mark row as
red.

Some things to remember:
1.) The sheet also contain Attic and Incubating projects, please ignore
them. Our focus is Apache's top level projects.
2.) Some projects that are managed by the same PMC, e.g. Apache Anakia does
not have a separate page,
but it is mentioned in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_Velocity. So
for these cases, same Wikipedia page will be used.

If you any queries, please free to contact Dmitriy (dpav...@apache.org) or
me (swapnilmm...@apache.org).
