Re: [VOTE] Break up lens code into two sub projects

2019-08-30 Thread amareshwarisr .
Hi Raghavendra,

We should try and check if single repo, multi module project can work with
dependencies being released version between subprojects, very similar to
Hadoop builds (https://github.com/apache/hadoop).

Even otherwise, having multiple git repositories for one apache project
should allowed. Though there are multiple apache projects with sub
projects, not finding documentation for number of repositories allowed for
an apache project. Jean, can you help confirm this?

Thanks

Re: Updated invitation: Lens RoadMap - Discussion @ Sat Aug 24, 2019 11am - 12pm (IST) (dev@lens.apache.org)

2019-08-28 Thread amareshwarisr .
Essentially, the ask is to separate metastore and query services into two
separate projects, so they can be build separately. Query service would
have dependency on metastore service.

Since the adaption of current stack is limited, fine separate the project
into two sub projects which can help them evolve separately. We iterated
the same in the call as well, where three PMC members participated.
Shall call out a vote for the same. PMC do express you concerns or comments
on the vote.

Thanks

Thanks Rajashekhar for sharing your views.

I have added some comments on the doc to understand the requirements and
features of interest better.

Though google doc is good tool for writing documents and providing
comments, team will not get emails for updates. Can you update this thread
with a summary of changes done whenever you update it?

Other dev and PMC, do review and provide your comments on the doc and
update this thread with a summary.

Thanks

We would like to get LENS-1412, LENS-981 in 2.7, both of them are in under
review.

Can you wait for them to bump up version?

Thanks

Report for May,2017

2017-05-15 Thread amareshwarisr .
Hi all,

Seems I'm left with only one day to update report. Here is the draft -
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/LENS/May%2C2017. Please review
and let me know if there are any comments.

If all is well, will update report by EOD.

Thanks
Amareshwari

Re: [DISCUSS] Release Plan for 2.7

2017-05-10 Thread amareshwarisr .

Have moved out few issues from 2.7. Also I see next release as still 2.8,
not 3.0.

Thanks
Amareshwari

Re: Lens meetup in April?

2016-04-12 Thread amareshwarisr .
Hi all,

Thanks for all the responses.

We can host the meetup at Inmobi office, Bangalore from 5pm to 7pm on 22nd
April. Will send out a calendar invite.

Here are some topics that come to top of my mind :

- Hive 2.x migration - Testing done and current status : Rajat ?
- Lens Scheduler feature - Design and current status : Ajay ?
- Enabling query submission throttling at various levels - Driver, Queue,
priority and user. : Puneet ?
- Lens regression - Current status and future : Archana ?

We should also discuss how we can improve the community engagement with the
project.

Any more topics that you want to cover? any one willing to volunteer?
Deepak ?

Rajat, Ajay, Puneet and Archana, please confirm if you are willing to cover
above topics.

Thanks
Amareshwari

Re: [VOTE] Release of Apache Lens 2.5.0-beta

2016-03-22 Thread amareshwarisr .
Thanks Deepak for patiently driving the release.

+1 (Binding) for releasing this candidate

+ Verified signatures.
+ Verified checksums.
+ License and notice looks fine.
+ No binary files in source zip
+ Nexus jars look fine.
+ Ran examples from binary distribution.
+ mvn clean package -DskipTests passes
- Could not run all unit tests - though i tried multiple times. Have seen
timeouts or failures. We should fix the test times and intermittent
failures in next release.

Thanks
Amareshwari

Fwd: [ANNOUNCE] CFP open for ApacheCon North America 2016

2015-11-25 Thread amareshwarisr .
Anyone interested in submitting a proposal? Please do.

Subject: [ANNOUNCE] CFP open for ApacheCon North America 2016
To: Rich Bowen

Community growth starts by talking with those interested in your
project. ApacheCon North America is coming, are you?

We are delighted to announce that the Call For Presentations (CFP) is
now open for ApacheCon North America. You can submit your proposed
sessions at
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apache-big-data-north-america/program/cfp
for big data talks and
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apachecon-north-america/program/cfp
for all other topics.

ApacheCon North America will be held in Vancouver, Canada, May 9-13th
2016. ApacheCon has been running every year since 2000, and is the place
to build your project communities.

While we will consider individual talks we prefer to see related
sessions that are likely to draw users and community members. When
submitting your talk work with your project community and with related
communities to come up with a full program that will walk attendees
through the basics and on into mastery of your project in example use
cases. Content that introduces what's new in your latest release is also
of particular interest, especially when it builds upon existing well
know application models. The goal should be to showcase your project in
ways that will attract participants and encourage engagement in your
community, Please remember to involve your whole project community (user
and dev lists) when building content. This is your chance to create a
project specific event within the broader ApacheCon conference.

Content at ApacheCon North America will be cross-promoted as
mini-conferences, such as ApacheCon Big Data, and ApacheCon Mobile, so
be sure to indicate which larger category your proposed sessions fit into.

Finally, please plan to attend ApacheCon, even if you're not proposing a
talk. The biggest value of the event is community building, and we count
on you to make it a place where your project community is likely to
congregate, not just for the technical content in sessions, but for
hackathons, project summits, and good old fashioned face-to-face networking.

Re: [VOTE] Release of Apache Lens 2.4.0-beta RC1

2015-11-22 Thread amareshwarisr .
+1 (Binding)

Verified the release candidate :

- Signature looks good
- Validated checksums
- LICENSE and NOTICE look ok.
- Built from source.
- Ran examples from binary distribution. All queries passed

Earlier I removed node/node_modules from rat_check, seems it is stuck there.

Thanks

Seems issue verification is done. Can we do other release tasks and
progress on the release?

This release has been taking so much time, we should do a proper planning
for next one to avoid such huge dates for rolling the release.

you can look at lensserver.out.* files in log directory for more

Hello Sandeep,

You dont have to run HiveServer for running tests. Please make sure you set
JAVA_HOME correctly.

$JAVA_HOME/bin/java should exist.

Re: Question regarding commits

2015-11-03 Thread amareshwarisr .
Hello Amruth,

Yes, example and pom.xml needs fixing.
It should also say PMC instead of PPMC, as we are not incubating any more.

And we should update documentation to mention, if you are invited as
committer - role is committer. If you are invited as PMC, role would say
both PMC and Committer.

Can you do above changes and also add youself as committer?

Thanks

Re: LensClient.isConnectionOpen behavior

2015-11-02 Thread amareshwarisr .
Can we understand usecases of this api?

Why is LensClient.isConnectionOpen required? Are we suggesting users should
call this for any api call? If that is required, for every call user has to
do two round trips to server.

Right now, all api takes session handle and returns 410 if session is
expired - upon which user can open a new session and try the call again. I
think that is a better option than providing an api for is current session
valid or not.

I see there is already some discussion on
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LENS-794 regarding this. Please check
if it makes sense.

Thanks

Re: lens eclipse setup

I'm not sure running server from eclipse will work. Right now, we use only
command-line. But you can try what Puneet is suggesting.

Puneet, it would be good to document above details on cwiki at
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/LENS/Apache+Lens+Home . Would
be useful for new contributors as well.

Re: [DISCUSS] Release Plan for 2.4

2015-09-18 Thread amareshwarisr .
Hi,

I would like to see the following in 2.4 release :

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LENS-752 ( i should be mostly done by
28th sept),
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LENS-576
and
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LENS-518 (mostly optimistic here, not
sure we can move there in 2.4)

Thanks
Amareshwari
