RE: [JENKINS] Lucene-Solr-5.x-Linux (32bit/jdk1.9.0-ea-b73) - Build # 13391 - Failure!

2015-07-25 Thread Uwe Schindler
Hi,

I modified the pre-send script of email-ext plugin to do the following:

def subject = msg.getSubject();

if (subject  subject.contains('-ea-b')) {

  subject = subject.replace('[JENKINS]','[JENKINS-EA]');

  msg.setSubject(subject, 'UTF-8');

  msg.setHeader('X-Priority', '5 (Low)');

}

So you can filter on 2 places:

- Subject startswith [JENKINS-EA]

- Mail priority is low

I agree with that. I could change the prefix [JENKINS] to [JENKINS-EA] for
EA-Builds by script/pattern.

Uwe: perhaps you could change your JDK9 jenkins job to run but not send
 emails on failures?

I'm for prefixing title somehow so that uninterested people can filter out
those e-mails, but leaving them as e-mails. I am interested in those failures
and it's push-style notification that suits me much better than periodic
checking of jenkins' logs.

One can pick what he's interested in (Solr, Lucene, java-ea, etc.), but I think
it's still fully relevant to know if Lucene/ Solr works on an anticipated new
release of Java, even if it's fairly early.

Please leave those e-mails coming to the mailing list.

Dawid

LUCENE-6693: Also load clover up front

Permgen errors in 5.x on Jenkins builds with JDK 1.7

 Key: LUCENE-6693
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-6693
 Project: Lucene - Core
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: general/build
Reporter: Uwe Schindler
Assignee: Uwe Schindler
 Fix For: 5.3, Trunk

 Attachments: LUCENE-6693.patch, LUCENE-6693.patch

Since I updated Groovy and other tools, 5.x builds fail with permgen errors
in Jenkins. During the build, Groovy (which is large) is loaded three times
 and this sums up.
 See Revision: 1692103
I reverted the Groovy update in 5.x for now. The fix is to make the top-level
build.xml also load common-build.xml and resolve groovy before the build
 starts.

Forbid usage of log4j and JUL logger in Solr

 Key: SOLR-7825

There are a few classes that directly rely on log4j to be on the classpath
instead and don't use the slf4j logging facade. This creates problems when
trying to switch the logging implementation.
 1. org.apache.solr.core.ZkContainer
 https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/blob/trunk/solr/core/src/java/org/apache/solr/core/ZkContainer.java#L218
I don't know the impact of this change, but shouldn't this call
 `org.apache.solr.logging.MDCLoggingContext.clear()` ?
 2. org.apache.solr.handler.component.RangeFacetProcessor and
 org.apache.solr.handler.component.RangeFacetRequest
should use slf4j instead of log4j
I had a stab at it at

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-6693) Permgen errors in 5.x on Jenkins builds with JDK 1.7

LUCENE-6693: Also load clover up front

Permgen errors in 5.x on Jenkins builds with JDK 1.7

 Key: LUCENE-6693
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-6693
 Project: Lucene - Core
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: general/build
Reporter: Uwe Schindler
Assignee: Uwe Schindler
 Fix For: 5.3, Trunk

 Attachments: LUCENE-6693.patch, LUCENE-6693.patch

Since I updated Groovy and other tools, 5.x builds fail with permgen errors
in Jenkins. During the build, Groovy (which is large) is loaded three times
 and this sums up.
 See Revision: 1692103
I reverted the Groovy update in 5.x for now. The fix is to make the top-level
build.xml also load common-build.xml and resolve groovy before the build
 starts.

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-7820) IndexFetcher should delete the current index directory before downloading the new index when isFullCopyNeeded==true

2015-07-25 Thread Varun Thacker (JIRA)

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-7820?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanelfocusedCommentId=14641637#comment-14641637
 ]

Varun Thacker commented on SOLR-7820:
-

bq. was synchronizing commits across replicas, since recovery skips segments
already present in the current index.

SOLR-6606 is the Jira.

IndexFetcher should delete the current index directory before downloading the
 new index when isFullCopyNeeded==true
 ---

 Key: SOLR-7820
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-7820
 Project: Solr
  Issue Type: Improvement
  Components: replication (java)
Reporter: Timothy Potter

When a replica is trying to recover and it's IndexFetcher decides it needs to
pull the full index from a peer (isFullCopyNeeded == true), then the existing
index directory should be deleted before the full copy is started to free up
disk to pull a fresh index, otherwise the server will potentially need 2x the
disk space (old + incoming new). Currently, the IndexFetcher removes the
index directory after the new is downloaded; however, once the fetcher
decides a full copy is needed, what is the value of the existing index? It's
clearly out-of-date and should not serve queries. Since we're deleting data
preemptively, maybe this should be an advanced configuration property, only
to be used by those that are disk-space constrained (which I'm seeing more
and more with people deploying high-end SSDs - they typically don't have 2x
the disk capacity required by an index).

In SOLR-4718 support was added for reading {{solr.xml}} from ZK by providing

Instead of adding this to start scripts, suggest to simplify the whole logic:
 * If not in cloud mode, require {{solr.xml}} in SOLR_HOME as today
 * If in cloud mode, first look for {{solr.xml}} in ZK, but if not found, load
 from SOLR_HOME as today
 * Remove the need for {{solr.solrxml.location}} property

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-7074) Simple script to start external Zookeeper

I like this idea. ZK is not officially supported in production for Windows, so
we'll likely not get much traction within the ZK project to fix the Win start
script. And perhaps Solr's usage of ZK is so basic that using the embedded ZK
is more than good enough, with decent defaults.

How about simplifying the configuration of a ZK ensemble as well? To start node
1 in an ensemble, issue {{bin/zk start -id 1}}, which would automatically
configure ZK with a {{myid}} file and decent {{zoo.cfg}} defaults, taking
server host/port from ZK_HOST in {{solr.in.sh}}, or from a {{-z}} param.

When starting Zookeeper for SolrCloud, we have two choices, bin/solr -c
(without -z) and run Zookeeper embedded. Whilst this works, it is suggestive
of bad practice, something you will have to unlearn later.
The second option is to download Zookeeper, and install it manually. This
isn't hugely hard, but it is quite manual. However, try it on Windows, and
you'll find the Windows start script for Zookeeper is extremely thin (no
 start/stop options, etc).
Solr contains everything needed to start Zookeeper. Why not have a bin/zk
script that can start it for us. Thus, first time user instructions for
 ZolrCloud could be:
 bin/zk start
 bin/zk uploadconf examples/techproducts/conf
 bin/solr start -c -Z
-Z here hypothetically says look in the standard place, localhost:2181, for
 Zookeeper.
 or even:
 bin/zk start -config=examples/techproducts/conf
 bin/ssolr start -Z
This should support both Windows and Unix.
bin/zk would support all the functionality of the current zkCli scripts as
well as being able to start/stop zookeeper.
This would make initial experience of using Solr a lot simpler, in my view,
which would be a good thing.
Not only that, deploying Zookeeper in production, for Solr, need only be push
a Solr app dir to the server, then run bin/zk start, reducing the complexity
 of installation.
Thoughts? If this seems like a good idea, and don't share valid objections,
I'm prepared to make it happen.

While we're at it, how about moving from scripts to Java programs that can be
run on Linux and Windows? That way we won't need to maintain two scripts for
everything, and whatever changes we make will be consistent on both platforms.
I know that I've been thinking about moving bin/solr to be like that for some
time, it's just a lot of work. But maybe bin/solrZkTool can be the prototype
since it's simpler?

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-7820) IndexFetcher should delete the current index directory before downloading the new index when isFullCopyNeeded==true

Ramkumar Aiyengar commented on SOLR-7820:

I agree there are a few issues here, just that the deleting the current index
just brushes them all under the carpet and adds risk.

 - The current default of 100 updates for {{UpdateLog}} is often insufficient
for many cases. I made that number configurable, if it's a few thousand
updates, just tweaking it might work. But {{UpdateLog}} has scaling limitations
I think, so YMMV. I thought {{CdcrUpdateLog}} came about to overcome this
scaling limitation -- but I haven't looked at it enough to know if it can
replace {{UpdateLog}}, perhaps [~erickerickson] or [~ysee...@gmail.com] know..
 - The other thing which could vastly improve this situation, even if a full
recovery was needed, was synchronizing commits across replicas, since recovery
skips segments already present in the current index. I believe [~varunthacker]
was looking at this, but I can't find the issue now.
 - Regardless, I agree that it would be a good enhancement to calculate ahead
of time how much space is needed for recovery and cleanly abort instead of
trying and running out of space.

IndexFetcher should delete the current index directory before downloading the

 Key: SOLR-7820
