[jira] [Updated] (SOLR-13622) Add FileStream Streaming Expression

2019-07-18 Thread Jason Gerlowski (JIRA)

 [
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-13622?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

Jason Gerlowski updated SOLR-13622:
---
Attachment: SOLR-13622.patch
Status: Open  (was: Open)

This is getting pretty close to committing. I've fixed the argument formatting
errors for {{fileStream}}, changed the paths to be relative to the core's data
directory, and added tests.

Going to let this sit for a day or two while I work on docs and then commit.

One thing in particular that I'd like feedback on is what to use as the
root/sandbox dir that provided filepaths are relative to. Right now this patch
uses the data directory for the particular Solr core that processes the
request. This might be inconvenient though for users whose cores aren't
stationary: users manually adding/removing replicas, users with autoscaling
enabled, etc. Maybe having paths relative to SOLR_HOME (and not
core/collection specific) would be a better optionhappy to get feedback
here.

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-8920) Reduce size of FSTs due to use of direct-addressing encoding

Mike Sokolov commented on LUCENE-8920:
--

Before digging in in earnest on FST size reduction, I'd like to tighten up the
FST.Arc contract. Right now it has all public members and no methods to speak
of, so the abstraction boundary is not well defined, and in fact we see
consumers modifying Arc members in a few places outside of the FST class
itself. This makes it more difficult to reason about the code and make provably
valid changes. My plan is to do some nonfunctional commits:

1. Add accessors (mostly getters, a few setters will be needed temporarily) to
Arc, and make all of its members private. It seems as if we often write
accessors with the same name as the member (rather than the bean standard), so
I'll go with that.
2. Eliminate the setters; this will require some light refactoring in FSTEnum,
and a few changes to the memory codec, which keeps a list of Arcs locally and
updates them for its own purposes.
3. Some refactoring and general cleanup (tightening up access, whitespace
fixes, etc)

Because that first step is going to touch a lot of files, keep it very strictly
about introducing the accessors, so there won't be anything beyond changing
things like `arc.flags` to `arc.flags()`, in a lot of places.

Once these changes are in, the fun can begin again :) I'll add Adrien's
worst-case test and work on getting the size down for that, pursuing the ideas
in the description.

> Some data can lead to worst-case ~4x RAM usage due to this optimization.
> Several ideas were suggested to combat this on the mailing list:
> bq. I think we can improve thesituation here by tracking, per-FST instance,
> the size increase we're seeing while building (or perhaps do a preliminary
> pass before building) in order to decide whether to apply the encoding.
> bq. we could also make the encoding a bit more efficient. For instance I
> noticed that arc metadata is pretty large in some cases (in the 10-20 bytes)
> which make gaps very costly. Associating each label with a dense id and
> having an intermediate lookup, ie. lookup label -> id and then id->arc offset
> instead of doing label->arc directly could save a lot of space in some cases?
> Also it seems that we are repeating the label in the arc metadata when
> array-with-gaps is used, even though it shouldn't be necessary since the
> label is implicit from the address?

> Current available routed aliases are restricted to a single field. This
> feature will allow Solr to provide data driven collection access, creation
> and management based on multiple fields in a document. The collections will
> be queried and updated in a unified manner via an alias. Current routing is
> restricted to the values of a single field. The particularly useful
> combination at this time will be Category X Time routing but Category X
> Category may also be useful. More importantly, if additional routing schemes
> are created in the future (either as contributions or as custom code by
> users) combination among these should be supported.
> It is expected that not all combinations will be useful, and that
> determination of usefulness I expect to leave up to the user. Some Routing
> schemes may need to be limited to be the leaf/last routing scheme for
> technical reasons, though I'm not entirely convinced of that yet. If so, a
> flag will be added to the RoutedAlias interface.
> Initial desire is to support two levels, though if arbitrary levels can be
> supported easily that will be done.
> This could also have been called CompositeRoutedAlias, but that creates a TLA
> clash with CategoryRoutedAlias.

   Exactly, yes; that's the idea. Thanks!

 Review comment:
   You mean, you want to make sure those two users get different affinity,
right? vs with shuffle-with-seed, they could end up in the same nodes?
   In any way, I think this PR looks good, we can improve things too in the
future if we want.

> This could also have been called CompositeRoutedAlias, but that creates a TLA
> clash with CategoryRoutedAlias.

the second try, after adding {{-Dtests.heapsize=30g}} to the cmdline, which may
be overkill here, but is what I use on my Jenkins jobs that run the monster

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-13399) compositeId support for shard splitting

2019-07-18 Thread Yonik Seeley (JIRA)

[

Yonik Seeley commented on SOLR-13399:
-

Final patch attached, I plan on committing soon. Some implementation notes:
- this only takes into account 2-level prefix keys, not tri-level yet (that can
be a followup JIRA)
- we currently only split into 2 ranges (again, can be extended in a followup
JIRA)
- if "id_prefix" has no values/data then no "ranges" split recommendation is
returned and the split proceeds as if splitByPrefix had not been specified.
  - in the future we could use the "id" field as a slower version
- Split within a prefix is only done if there are not multiple prefix buckets
in the shard (i.e. no allowedSizeDifference implemented in this issue)

> Shard splitting does not currently have a way to automatically take into
> account the actual distribution (number of documents) in each hash bucket
> created by using compositeId hashing.
> We should probably add a parameter *splitByPrefix* to the *SPLITSHARD*
> command that would look at the number of docs sharing each compositeId prefix
> and use that to create roughly equal sized buckets by document count rather
> than just assuming an equal distribution across the entire hash range.
> Like normal shard splitting, we should bias against splitting within hash
> buckets unless necessary (since that leads to larger query fanout.) . Perhaps
> this warrants a parameter that would control how much of a size mismatch is
> tolerable before resorting to splitting within a bucket.
> *allowedSizeDifference*?
> To more quickly calculate the number of docs in each bucket, we could index
> the prefix in a different field.  Iterating over the terms for this field
> would quickly give us the number of docs in each (i.e lucene keeps track of
> the doc count for each term already.)  Perhaps the implementation could be a
> flag on the *id* field... something like *indexPrefixes* and poly-fields that
> would cause the indexing to be automatically done and alleviate having to
> pass in an additional field during indexing and during the call to
> *SPLITSHARD*.  This whole part is an optimization though and could be split
> off into its own issue if desired.

the delay, the 8.2.0 release process was already underway and I was waiting for

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-13240) UTILIZENODE action results in an exception

Christine Poerschke commented on SOLR-13240:

So looking at the
[TestPolicy.testReplicaCountSuggestions|https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/blob/releases/lucene-solr/8.1.1/solr/solrj/src/test/org/apache/solr/client/solrj/cloud/autoscaling/TestPolicy.java#L2015-L2031]
 method, it does a {{loadFromResource}} on
[testReplicaCountSuggestions.json|https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/blob/releases/lucene-solr/8.1.1/solr/solrj/src/test-files/solrj/solr/autoscaling/testReplicaCountSuggestions.json]
 and my interpretation/explanation of the expected test result would be
something like "one of the two cores on 10.0.0.6:8983_solr should move to
10.0.0.6:7574_solr and (everything else being equal) core_node1 is chosen ahead
of core_node2 based on its name".

It might be nice to find and add similar narrative for the
[TestPolicy.testNodeLostMultipleReplica|https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/blob/releases/lucene-solr/8.1.1/solr/solrj/src/test/org/apache/solr/client/solrj/cloud/autoscaling/TestPolicy.java#L952-L1083]
 method too, though its logic is more intricate.

What do you think?

Multiple Ranges

   @iverase I was hesitant to do that since MultiRangeQuery will take multiple
points as inputs, so if we were to build the entire query in one go, that would
require the user to pass in an array of arrays upfront. The builder approach,
much like BooleanQuery, gives the user a friendly option to populate ranges and
then build a query. WDYT?

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-11266) V2 API returning wrong content-type

Gus Heck commented on SOLR-11266:

For reference, this is the override from the configs:
{code:xml}

text/plain; charset=UTF-8

 {code}
We could distribute _default with this corrected (removed), and have a
_browser_example config also installed and available by default that does have
this override. A name like that should make it pretty clear which to select
when going through examples in the ref guide or other publications, but not
become what people automatically use as a starting point.

Updated patch:
* more refactoring :)
* added ResourceManagerHandler under /admin/resources to expose the resource

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-13642) Test2BPostingsBytes org.apache.lucene.index.CorruptIndexException: docs out of order (490879719 <= 490879719 )

Shawn Heisey commented on SOLR-13642:
-

Test2BPostingsBytes is a Lucene test, not a Solr test. Which means this report
is out of place in the SOLR project on Jira. The test mentioned in SOLR-13639
is also a Lucene test, not a Solr test. I will move both issues to the LUCENE
project.

Java from IBM is known to have bugs when running Lucene. IBM enables several
optimizations by default, some of which are not compatible with Lucene code.
Using OpenJDK or a JDK from Oracle will likely produce better results.

> Visualization is now a fundamental element of Solr Streaming Expressions and
> Math Expressions. This ticket will create a visual guide to Solr Math
> Expressions and Solr Streaming Expressions that includes *Apache Zeppelin*
> visualization examples.
> It will also cover using the JDBC expression to *analyze* and *visualize*
> results from any JDBC compliant data source.
> Intro from the guide:
> {code:java}
> Streaming Expressions exposes the capabilities of Solr Cloud as composable
> functions. These functions provide a system for searching, transforming,
> analyzing and visualizing data stored in Solr Cloud collections.
> At a high level there are four main capabilities that will be explored in the
> documentation:
> * Searching, sampling and aggregating results from Solr.
> * Transforming result sets after they are retrieved from Solr.
> * Analyzing and modeling result sets using probability and statistics and
> machine learning libraries.
> * Visualizing result sets, aggregations and statistical models of the data.
> {code}
>
> A few sample visualizations are attached to the ticket.

> Lucene's IO abstractions ({{Directory, IndexInput/Output}}) make it really
> easy to track counters of how many IOPs and net bytes are read for each
> query, which is a useful metric to track/aggregate/alarm on in production or
> dev benchmarks.
> At my day job we use these wrappers in our nightly benchmarks to catch any
> accidental performance regressions.

   I decided to try and keep the API changes minimal, so I've preserved the old
`getTerms()` method on `GraphTokenStreamFiniteStrings` and backed out changes
to `QueryBuilder` - we can look at those in LUCENE-8644 separately.

   Ok, that is fine.

   I think we should follow the structure hat we have for other queries, e.g.
Add in {X}Point fields a new method like:

   ```
   public static Query newMultiRangeQuery(String field, {X}[] lowerValues,
{X}[] upperValues) {
   //Call query with packed values
}
   ```

   In this case we do not have to change the visibility there pack method.

   > This approach is ok when the number of ranges is low but I wonder if it
would be worthy to order the ranges on an interval tree (similar to EdgeTree)
so we can skip quickly ranges that do not match the inner nodes.

   Do you feel that can be done as a follow up PR, since this PR is large
enough in itself, and the ordering can probably be built on top of this one?

Re: Lucene/Solr 8.2.0

2019-07-18 Thread Ignacio Vera
Hi,

As there is no blockers for the release of Lucene/Solr 8.2 and the branch
is stable I am planning to build the first Release candidate tomorrow
(Friday). Please let us know if there is any concern/ issue that needs to
be dealt with before moving to the next step.

   This approach is ok when the number of ranges is low but I wonder if it
would be worthy to order the ranges on an interval tree (similar to EdgeTree)
so we can skip quickly ranges that do not match the inner nodes.

[jira] [Created] (SOLR-13643) ResponseBuilder should provide accessors/setters for analytics response handling

2019-07-18 Thread Neal Sidhwaney (JIRA)
Neal Sidhwaney created SOLR-13643:
-

 Summary: ResponseBuilder should provide accessors/setters for
analytics response handling
 Key: SOLR-13643
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-13643
 Project: Solr
  Issue Type: Task
  Security Level: Public (Default Security Level. Issues are Public)
  Components: Response Writers
Affects Versions: 8.1.1
Reporter: Neal Sidhwaney

Right now inside o.a.s.h.c.AnalyticsComponent.java, fields inside
ResponseBuilder are accessed directly.  Since they're in the same package, this
is OK at compile tie.  But when the Solr core and Analytics jars are loaded at
runtime by Solr, they are done by different classloaders, which causes an
IllegalAccessError during request handling.  There must be soething different
about y setup which is why I am running into this, but it seems like a good
idea to abstract away the fields behinds setters/getters anyway.
