[native-lang-dev] New Project Lead role for the Chinese (Traditional) Native-Language team

2011-04-12 Thread RAFAELLA BRACONI

Dear All,

I would like to officially welcome Imacat in her new project lead role
for the zh-tw OOo native language team.

@Stefan/Louis: can you please grant her project lead permissions
including admin access to the zh.openoffice.org web pages?
For Chinese the zh.openoffice.org home page is a single point that hosts
the links to the Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional) pages.

Imacat will take care of the maintenance of the Traditional Chinese ones.

For the more dynamic content, I'd suggest the usage of the
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Zh-TW .

Thank you in advance for all your efforts!

Kind Regards,
Rafaella

Re: [native-lang] Resignation as the Catalan NLC Leader

2010-10-15 Thread Rafaella Braconi - Program Manager

Hi Jesús,

I should say thank you for your great contribution to this project.
It's been a pleasure meeting you and working with you. I regret to see your
resignation but I fully respect your decision as I will (continue) to
support

Jordi Mas in his new role.

My sincerest best wishes for the future,

Rafaella
OOo L10n Project Lead

On 14.10.10 23:02, Jesús Corrius wrote:

Hi Louis, Charles, all,

This email is my official resignation as the Catalan NLC Leader. My
position as a member of another foundation makes my two roles
incompatible. From now, I claim no official representation of any kind
regarding the OpenOffice.org project.

I have been involved in this project for almost 10 years, when Sun and
Softcatalà started a collaboration to translate OpenOffice.org into
Catalan in the very beginning of the project, a few months ago before
the release of the version 1.0. That makes me one of veterans of the
project, but fortunately I was only 21 years old then, so now I am
still, I hope, a bit young.

Thanks to this project I have met some of the smartest and nicest
people I have met in my whole life, and this is something I will never
forget. In my memories there will always be moments like being awake
all night trying to compile OOo 1.0 in a very old Solaris Sparc pizza
box, the presentation of the first version of OOo in Catalan,
arriving alone in Lyon without knowing anyone and meeting a lot of
interesting people, the organization of the OpenOffice.org Conference
2007 in Barcelona, or that crazy trip to China, something that was
beyond my wildest dreams. Of course, they have also been some bad and
uncomfortable moments and strong discussions, but I am sure those will
be forget those very quickly.

I would like to propose Jordi Mas, who did an outstanding job
co-organizing the OpenOffice.org Conference 2008, and is a well known
hacker of the FOSS community, to take the role as the new Catalan NLC
project leader. This is one of those cases where the replacement is
better than the original, so I am sure the Catalan community, thanks
to him, will be even more stronger and productive than it is now.

I just one to thank some people before I say goodbye. First of all,
and most important, I would like to thank Sun Microsystems to trust a
21 years student of Cinema to lead the translation and engineering of
the Catalan version almost 10 years ago. I wouldn't be here without
them. They have all my respect and gratitude. I would also like to
thank all the Oracle employers and, with special gratitude, Louis
Suárez-Potts, Rafaella Braconi and Nils Fuhrmann.

I will continue to support the OpenOffice.org project in my personal
life and I wish you all the best.

Sincerely,

Jesús Corrius i Llavina
Former OpenOffice.org Catalan NLC Project Leader.

Yes I did. I don't find it satisfactory, for three reasons.

1) as mh wrote on the issue as an answer to you, there was ample times

issue(s) were not raised?

2) If the bugfix is scheduled for the 3.2.1 then wait for the 3.2.1. I'm
sure that there are other bugs, l10n specific or not, but there is also
a release process and schedules, so please follow them.

3) Last but not least, we have a situation now where we have two sources
for spanish builds. We have the vanilla one and the ones from Pavel.
This calls for one selection of one source the need to stick to it. You
may, on the other hand have good reasons to distribute Pavel's builds,
but then please state your reasons so that at least there is no
duplication of effort. In any case, it's about coherence.

below showstopper in builds that will not be used.

[native-lang] Re: [l10n-dev] Translating on the Wiki

2009-11-25 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Hi Clayton,

thank you for the below update and for re-opening a productive
discussion thread on the need of a localization process for wiki
documentation.

I am saying re-opening because this is something we already started
quite some time ago:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/L10n_Wiki_Process_for_Documentation

By looking at the status of the above page, I just realized that it definitively needs
to get updated. It would be really great if we could restart using this page to track
were we are and to update any relevant information.

From the *l10n* perspective, the current status is that we have set up a dedicated Pootle server for
documentation where to post wiki extracted content as XLIFF:
pootle3.sunvirtuallab.com
However, we are still working to find a good way to convert wtxt to
xliff by keeping the wiki structure (that is to say one file per page
extracted)
The advantage would be to have the documentation content all in one
place and tools with which translators are more or less familiar.

But of course Pootle is not the only tool and i would be more that glad to
explore other processes and tools.

Or, we could look into other possibilities ... so the more feedback on this topic, the better :-)

Kind Regards,
Rafaella

I want to run this past everyone who might be involved in translating
documents on the OOoWiki and get some of your input.

Periodically we have well-intentioned community members translating Wiki
content. Unfortunately they often translate directly in the original
page, overwriting the original content with the translated content.
We've been catching most of it, and sorting it out with emails to the
people doing the translations and correcting the errors.

I'm working on a few things with the Doc Project members... some we've
implemented, some still in the idea stage... to try and reduce this, and
make things easier for everyone who's doing translations (we want to
encourage people to keep on translating :-) )

We've added this new Help page to the wiki:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Help:Translating
which still needs to be worked on a bit to get cover all the info
required (feel free to edit it and add info that is helpful to first
time translators) - the intended audience for the Help page is for first
time translators and people doing ad-hoc translations. Co-ordinated
translations using offline processes (converting to po or xlif ect) is
not really the focus on the Help:Translating page.

I've added a note to the Wiki that shows up at the bottom of the page
every time you edit - maybe you've noticed it? If not, just edit any
page and look immediately below the Save button.

We've also come across this translation extension:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Translate
which was originally designed to translate MediaWiki messages, but is
apparently being used to translate Wiki content as well. What may be of
interest to everyone involved in the more formal organized translation
process is the fact that it can export po format. If you as a group are
interested in exploring this extension a little, I can install it,
but... it would be up to you to work with it and test it to see if it
meets your needs. I have some preliminary contact info with people who
say it's suitable to use for page translations (see
http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Main_Page )

It's really so great to know you'll be there!

One of the point of this meeting is to discuss the infrastructure our

face 2 face meeting will take place in Hamburg short before the AB
meeting the 29/30 of October. This will be the ESC and some guests [4].
Unfortunately I won't be able to attend the Hamburg meeting.

For having speak with Andre and some others, we think that those
discussions on the OOo infrastructure should take also our needs into
account. Some features are asked since several years (like mail handling
for one of them) and still are not a priority.

Would it be possible that we have an IRC session to discuss about your
needs, your ideas and what you would like to see as a priority for the
next technical infrastructure of our project ? And of course any other
topic is welcome :)

My availabilities for this IRC session are :
16 October : after 18 h UTC
18/19/20/21 October : from 6 h UTC to 19 h UTC or earlier/later if needed.

My suggestion: October 20-21 from 13 h UTC

Rafaella

We could have to 2 sessions if needed because of time zone. Please let
me know what suits best for you. The channel will be #ooonlc

We have the option of producing t-shirts (details will be discussed on

2.000-2.000 items. Or, we could produce some less t-shirts and
additionally some mouse pads or mugs.

+1 for less t-shirts and more other giveaways...

So, my question to the NLC projects is: How many t-shirts do you think
could be realistically used as (free) giveaways in the different
countries in the next let's say 3-6 months? I need a rough estimation,
so we see how many items to produce. Please keep in mind who can hand
them out and where (trade shows etc.) they could be distributed.

Any feedback welcome!

for providing this just before leaving the meeting)

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/IRC_Meetings#Log_File

Unfortunately, we haven't been able to cover all topics. I was
suggesting to have another meeting on January 30th however, I've
just realized that this would be in approx. 3 weeks time. Therefore,
I am NOW suggesting, Tuesday, January 23rd at 12:00 UTC which is
exactly 2 weeks from today.

[native-lang] Dictionaries / Thesaurus

2006-10-10 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Hi Charles, Pavel,

during the NL Meeting in Lyon, some of the NL Community representatives
brought to the attention the issue regarding dictionaries and thesaurus
they would like to see integrated into the builds.

If I remember well we suggested the following process:

- file an issue to Pavel, cc: myself ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
- describe in the issue the location of the dictionary / thesaurus to
integrate

- specify the tool license lgpl/gpl

So far I haven't received any request for dictionary integration. Have you?

With this mail I would like to remind the NL Communities of the above
process. Also, I would like to emphasize that in case the dictionary
/thesaurus is under GPL license, Martin will need to request legal
approval before integration.

OOo builds can be released and distributed only under LGPL license.

Kind Regards,
Rafaella
