Regarding Kotlin - there is

https://github.com/JetBrains/kotlin-netbeans

and it is Apache 2.0 licensed...

I think it is maybe not very well maintained but probably a good starting
point..

I'm on Mac OSX 10.13.4.
I looked at the files DEPENDENCIES, LICENSE, and NOTICE, they look good.
I built the sources with Ant and JDK 8, the result started up, no problems,
new Welcome screen looks great.

"Hello Apache NetBeans" YouTube clip

2018-07-08 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Hi all,

We're doing pretty well in smoothing the rough edges and moving towards the
final release.

Time for putting some media together -- specifically, there's a "Featured
Demo" on the Welcome screen that was pointing to a dead link and so I made
something small as a placeholder for the moment, and have linked it into
the right location (which can be done externally, i.e., is separate from
the NetBeans sources):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn4_yb4yG7c

However, the above is really simplistic and too basic.

Maybe, we could have the welcome video be filled with a few seconds of
people from around the world saying things like "Hi, I'm Joe from Munich,
Germany, and I'm really excited about Apache NetBeans because of X, Y, Z"
or "Hello, I'm Jane from New York, and it's great to see that X Y Z etc
etc."

And if we had a bunch of about at least 10 of these, of about 20 seconds
each, we could include them in the "Hello Apache NetBeans" clip to give
color to the breadth of the community and the extent of its enthusiasm.

Feedback welcome, including in the form of a short clip to be included.

Thanks,

Gj

Yes, unless someone steps out and writes a proper support (which should be
doable, it just would take some time and effort). It is very unlikely I
personally would have time for that. There appear to be more uses for the
LSP client, so it may be easier to get somewhere in this direction.

Yes, but I don't think that's bad by itself (I was even thinking of writing
a server using the NB's Java support).

This is a big problem, IMO, not only impossible to do such complex things,
but also many other features appear to be more limited, etc. But there may
be a set of languages/usecases where using the LSP may be the best option.

This is why I didn't use the LSP when I was writing the remote Java
feature/experiment:
https://github.com/apache/incubator-netbeans/pull/558

(Although it might be possible to partially reuse LSP there, and only
extend it.)

[VOTE] Release Apache NetBeans 9.0 (incubating) [vote candidate 3]

2018-07-08 Thread Emilian Bold
Hi all,

Please vote on releasing Apache NetBeans 9.0 (incubating)!

If this voting candidate passes, another similar voting will be started on
gene...@incubator.apache.org, and if that passes too, then we can release this
version. This build will also undergo validation through NetCAT.

Apache NetBeans 9.0 (incubating) constitutes all the modules in the Apache
NetBeans Git repo, which together provide the NetBeans Platform (i.e., the
underlying application framework), as well as all the modules that provide the
Java SE-related features of Apache NetBeans.

In short, Apache NetBeans 9.0 (incubating) is a full IDE for Java SE
development.

Build artifacts available here:

Release specific wiki page:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/Apache+NetBeans+9.0+Final+Release

How (and what) to try out the release:

1. Download the artifact to be voted on and unzip it.
2. Verify the cryptographic signatures, the NOTICE and LICENSE file
3. Build it using the README provided by the artifact.
4. Look in nbbuild/netbeans for the NetBeans installation created by the build
process.
5. Run the NetBeans executable and (if you're running on JDK 8) you'll be
prompted to install nb-javac, after agreeing to its licensing terms, and (if
you're running on JDK 9), you'll be able to use javac directly from JDK 9 and,
optionally, you'll be prompted to install nb-javac, after agreeing to its
licensing terms.

If the above succeeds, i.e., Apache NetBeans installs and starts up vote +1 in
this thread.

Note that according to
http://www.apache.org/legal/release-policy.html#release-approval :

> Before casting +1 binding votes, individuals are REQUIRED to download all
> signed source code packages onto their own hardware, verify that they meet
> all requirements of ASF policy on releases as described below, validate all
> cryptographic signatures, compile as provided, and test the result on their
> own platform.

Please try out the package, using the instructions above, and vote!

The vote is open for a minimum of 72 hours or until the necessary number of
votes (3 binding +1s) is reached.

[ ] +1 Release this package as Apache NetBeans 9.0 (incubating)
[ ] 0 I don't feel strongly about it, but I'm okay with the release
[ ] -1 Do not release this package because...

Please add "(binding)" if your vote is binding, i.e., you are an Apache
NetBeans PPMC member, i.e., your name is on this page:
http://home.apache.org/committers-by-project.html#netbeans , although note the
only real binding votes in the incubator are those of the IPMC, i.e., in the
next vote thread, after this one passes.

Yes, we should fix this, but since we have now started putting the VC3
together, let's leave this for VC4 (assuming there'll be one) or, if not,
the next release.

Re: Ready for Vote Candidate 3?

2018-07-08 Thread Jens Hofschröer
Hi

If I open the "about" dialog I saw this exception:

 [exec] INFO [org.openide.util.ImageUtilities]: Image
org/netbeans/core/startup/about_nb.png is not PNG
 [exec] javax.imageio.IIOException: Bad PNG signature!

The mentioned file is in deed a GIF. As far as I can remember all files
in Oracle NetBeans were PNG even if the file extension was GIF. As
Jaroslav mentioned in an earlier thread (last year I think) the
filenames are part of the API so we can't change them, but I think we
should either respect the file extension or make them all PNG.

Greetings
Jens

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache NetBeans 9.0 (incubating) [vote candidate 2]

2018-07-08 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Many thanks to everyone for voting in this thread.

A new vote candidate is being put together, mainly so that the Welcome
screen will match the Splash screen, i.e., the branding should be
consistent when we launch our first official Apache NetBeans (incubating)
release.

Therefore, a new vote thread will be started for the new vote candidate,
once we have it, and we kindly request that everyone try it out and vote
afresh in the related thread once it's there.

Thanks all,

Gj

Re: Language Server Protocol client

2018-07-08 Thread Emilian Bold
Nice. This might be the only way to get support for some languages like Kotlin
that intentionally don't support NetBeans.

Still, I find something odd about LSP... The IDE becomes nothing more than a
remote display.

I'm also curious how something more complex like a refactoring that touches
multiple languages and configuration files would work with LSP.
