the workeffort component. It is the myportal solution.

Are you sure we (the whole of the OFBiz community) want the user experience 
regarding the Manufacturing application to become as diluted with 
screens/forms/functions as some others are? I, for one, am not keen on that.

It seems you're pulling more and more together into this, so that many issues
are addressed: inspection, quality measurements, WIP, time registrations, etc...

For review and acceptance purposes the distributed/separated approach is
easier, swallowing the elephant in one piece is way harder than piece by piece.

Apart from the above, please indulge me for a moment to explain my viewpoint on
the whole of manufacturing mgt with OFBiz (issues - and comments thereon -
registered by others, you and me) in relation to the various entities in other
applications/components and the DRMBs (1 and 2).

Executing a production run (manufacturing) is in essence a simple set of
processes, triggered by others (e.g. order and/or requirements registration -
and their related entities), governed/directed by again others (defining
schemas,tasks and BoMs) effecting yet another set of other processes and
entities (time registrations, inventory items).

This simplicity is fairly well implemented in OFBiz, while at the same time
allowing for some of the required complexities individual companies might have.
As we can surmise, we are not there yet regarding the OSFA (One Size Fits All).
But with your help we are getting to something that can be applied to your
specific needs as well, that's for sure.

Now, on to the details (given the above, and reiterating a bit more - my
apologies for that):
# the WorkEffort entity is for the registration of the activity (schema, schema
task, production and production run task). It relates to the resource (person,
production equipment et all) and the facility.
# the InventoryItem entity is for the registration of the goods (raw material,
intermediate, end product, waste, rejects, etc) going in and coming out of the
the activity. And it relates to the activity, the facility and worker (the
latter somehow).
# the TimeEntry is for registration of time spent on the activity. And it
relates to the resource (person or other production resource).

What you are trying to achieve is extending existing entity elements (I must
confess: in my assertion) in order to have more insights in the whole down to
the nitty-gritty details. This, is for sure, the domain of data
warehousing/data analysis/reporting.

But how you want to achieve the latter should not be done by extending the
former in that way (and that much).
To give as example(s):
* you're proposing to change the TimeEntry entity by including elements for
quantity produced and quantity rejected. That is not needed as quantity
produced (and rejected) can be registered through the entities in the product
component.
* you're proposing to change the InventoryItemDetail entity to include the Id
of the TimeEntry record to have a relation with the elements stated above and
the time spent. That is also not needed as there is a relation to TimeEntry
records via the association of the WorkEffort record.

Now, the aspects to bring it all together (more/better) for data
warehousing/analysis and reporting (according to DRMB vol 2, page 70 and
following) is the Star Schema for Manufacturing feeding into ofbizolap (the
targeted db) as opposed to ofbiz (for transactions) and pre-eminently the
'ProductionRunFact' entity.

Another aspect (more high level) to consider is this: if we were to apply the
associated patch as is, how much more would it complicate/confuse other
operators/users of OFBiz manufacturing? Way more, I surmise.
Can it be configured to work in that other way for that other kind of user? At
the moment (given current feature/requirement set) it can't. And with the
implementation of the associated patch it can't either...
On the whole a degradation in the adoption potential of OFBiz in general, and
of OFBiz Manufacturing in particular. (I fear).

Have you taken into consideration that such requires approval? Consider the
scenario where the two departments are located miles apart (different
facilities - or even sub facilities on the same plot). Consider also the
manager of department A not being the manager of department B.

Re: User experience and optionality
The best way to maximise the user experience regarding the optionality is
through configuration. But like I said: are we (OFBiz) sure we want such
aspects like time registration forms and others pulled from other components
into Manufacturing, risking the potential dilution/degradation of the user
experience/adoption potential? You can guess my viewpoint.

None of those components supported associations down to 
relations(TimeEntryAssoc) between the individual party units-of-work which is 
what is needed for inspection functionality on my end.  More than one worker 
can declare produced at any task so there is a need to relate declarations 
together to deduce adequate production inspection reports.  Even if entities 
currently supported the needed functionality entering the data would be a much 
more cumbersome process compared to what the patch offers.

It seems if inspections are really covered in OFBiz then there would at least 
exist a routing task workEffortPurposeType for inspection as there are for 
manufacturing, assembling, and sub-contracting which the patch adds.  Would it 
be better if every little change were extracted from the patch and created as 
separate issues such as the one-liner to add the inspection 
workEffortPurposeType on which the overall issue is dependent?

Pierre,

An inventory  transfer approval process was not accounted for in the patch.  It 
was simply creates a product transfer based on the functionality provided in 
OFBIZ-6042 with status IXF_COMPLETE.  Perhaps the status should be available as 
option to support approvals.  I'll also work on default options that prevent 
time entries by default but having the feature available OOTB would be 
convenient.

The patch extends the TimeEntry entity to include the setupTime, actualTime, 
quantityProduced, and quantityRejected fields to provide more granularity than 
offered by the WorkEffort entity alone to track workers production run 
contribution.  The TimeEntry entity was chosen as the granularity-providing 
entity over creating a new entity such as WorkEffortFact as what seems to be 
suggested on page 70 of the DMRB (ProductionRunFact) as pointed out by Pierre 
because commented code already existed in the productionRunDeclaration code 
meant to employ the TimeEntry entity and because deviation from the DMRB made 
it more difficult for determining how an alternative might be implemented.

TimeEntryAssoc was also added to support the inspection capabilities requested 
in OFBIZ-5569.  The production run declaration form was extended to show a drop 
down of time entries that can be inspected when the task is assigned the newly 
added inspection WorkEffortPurposeType.  The time entry drop down is dependent 
on those time entries associated with an inventory move to the assigned 
facility of the inpection task which depends on the inventoryTransferId 
functionality of OFBIZ-6255.  Choosing a timeEntryId from the drop down 
triggers the creation of a TimeEntryAssoc of type inspection.  TimeEntryAssoc 
is also used to control timeEntry reversions which causes the timeEntries to 
disappear from the listing and revert the inventory transfer if one exists.  
Reversions also cause deducations of the newly added TimeEntry setupTime, 
actualTime, quantityProduced, and quantityRejected fields from the 
corresponding WorkEffort fields just as they are added for new declarations.

So production run tasks may not be performed at different facilities?  I don't 
understand why such a rule is necessary.  I created a parent facility 
representing the plant containing child facilities representing the 
departments.  Tasks for a single routing are supposed to be performed in 
various departments (subfacilities).  Integration of the inventory 
functionality is meant to provide managers the ability to determine where WIP 
pieces are located amongst the various task facilties to get an idea of 
department work loads and the progress of the part.

WIP is what is inside of a production run. The stage where products 
(ingredients/components/etc) are in during the production run determines the 
value accrued. This doesn't require an inventory registration. Nor does it 
require tracking location, as it is in the location where the production takes 
place.

Hey Pierre,

By WiP parts as a BoM node I meant having it between the raw material and 
finished good (Raw-WIP-Good), however it doesn't seem the best approach.  I'm 
just trying to find a way to have inventory created specifically for tracking 
WIP parts as they move through facilities during their production run.  WIP 
type parts seem to be the best candidates for such functionality but I haven't 
determined how they should be created and allowed to be transferred from the 
production run pages.

Actually on second thought, storing WIP products between the RAW MATERIAL and 
FINISHED GOOD bom nodes doesn't seem that bad except that production runs seem 
to be created to produce the WIP which seems incorrect.  If instead production 
runs were instead created to produce finished goods from materials while 
creating WIP inventory during the material issuance phase, it seems a good 
approach.

Currently if a WIP product exists between raw material and finished good, a 
separate production run is created to produce that WIP but the production run 
throws an error Product is WIP when trying to declare and produce the 
product.  I don't understand the why a WIP production is created if its not 
able to produce.

 managers can get an idea of the department work load.  InventoryItemDetails 
 should be created during production run declarations so that the material 
 that was stocked out for the production run can be tracked while it is being 
 manufacturing into the good.  Essentially is would be like stock moves or 
 inventory xfers occuring within the production runs for the task fixed asset 
 facilities/locations.

Christian,

If you want to have inventory registrations between the various production 
stages, it is better to spit up the production run. WIP as defined in OFBiz 
(and in many other ERPs) is a cost reporting mechanism at the end of a period, 
that will be reverted immediately thereafter for the new period. It is not an 
inventory registration mechanism.

Hi Christian,

if I recall correctly, the original (naive) implementation was the following:
* WIP products are not designed to be produced and stored in the facility
* WIP products represents work in process items, created by a production run 
specifically for another (dependent on it) production run
* when the first production run is completed, the dependent one can start (this 
models the idea that the WIP products are used by the production run) and 
produce the finished goods

If on the other hand you would like to stock semi finished products in the 
facility, with the current implementation you should not define the semi 
finished products as WIP and then you should produce them; the last production 
run will issue them from the facility and finally produce finished goods.

The process can definitely be improved.

Thanks Jacopo,

The intention is to provide a was for an operations manager to determine the 
work load of facilities based on the location of production run WIP pieces.  I 
was thinking that for a BOM structure Raw-WIP-Good should not create a 
separate production run for WIP thus causing 2 production runs in all but, 
rather create 1 production run so that raw materials issuances stocks WIPs in, 
while producing stocks WIPs out.  Does that approach seem worthy of 
implementation?

I interpreted this to mean WIP inventory may exist as needed.  If WIP inventory 
isn't allowed then how does one go about determining where production run parts 
are located at any given time?  If having WIP inventory causes accounting 
errors then they need to be handled but the need for tracking locations of 
production run parts is still needed and using products of type WIP seem to be 
the most logic way of doing that.
