Rob's scripts use some additional filtering meant, for example, to count
only the main installations and not language packs. But you can play
with the statistics at

http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/4.0.1/stats/timeline
(change file allows you to select a specific directory, the map has
downloads by geographical area, or by Internet Countries, i.e.,
top-level domains such as .de, .fr...)

Opensource and security

2013-10-09 Thread Guy Waterval
Hi all,

A little off topic perhaps, for this list, but perhaps also a frequent
question to which it could be nice to have some answers.
An opensource sofware has the advantage, in security terms, to grant that
there are no spyware in it, that's OK. But is there no danger, as the code
is public, to facilitate the creation of virus. It's always a problem for
me to answer to this kind of question, it's unclear for me. So, If somebody
could bring some arguments understandable for end users about this issue,
It would be great.
The same could be applicable to the ODF, what are the advantages, in terms
of security, to work with an open format.

Many thanks

I haven't tried it for a long time but I assume it worked if you the
configure again and again on the different platforms and use the
generated env scripts (e.g. MacOSXX86Env.Set.sh, ...). On Linux you
potentially run into a name conflict but you can copy the scripts before
calling configure on the next Linux platform. Just try it out.

I did try it, that why I ask others :-)

the .sh files is not the biggest problem, unxlngx6.pro directory is my
biggest problem because configure/bootstrap generates several files, which
seems to want to be in unxlngx6.pro. I think I miss a configure switch to
 set the object directory.

yes that seems to be a real problem on Linux. Sharing between Linux
systems seems to be not possible at the moment. unxlngx6 or unxlngi6
is the only difference between 32 and 64 bit.

You can play with

OUTPATH=unxmacxi
INPATH=unxmacxi.pro

in the env script and change it for your different linux systems and
adapt the generated dirs as well. But I assume that it is not easy
possible because of many hard coded usages all over the build scripts
and config files.

The point is when a user queries Google for terms like OpenOffice for
Mac that is the #1 page on the results list. Users do this and visit
that page around 4000 times per day.

If we merely deleted that page then these 4000 people would get a 404
error. After a period of time, probably a few weeks, Google would
update their index and another page would be the #1 search result and
get that traffic. The #2 link is a CNet page, so the traffic would
probably go there and not to our website.

If we redirect to a generic page, like our home page, then we get no
404 error. But as Google updates its index it would see that the
redirected page is not really relevant to the query OpenOffice for
Mac and would reorder its results so the traffic would still point to
CNet.

The only way to preserve this traffic is to have a relevant page about
OpenOffice for Mac. It doesn't need to be complicated. But it needs
to have enough discussion about using OpenOffice on the Mac to look
relevant to Google and Bing.

I suggested such a page in the past, even outlined it, but no Mac
volunteers ever completed it:

There is some more information on these statistics here:

http://www.openoffice.org/stats/downloads.html

The source of the raw data is SourceForge which has a public REST API
that we can query. For each of our files, or directories, we can get
information like:

1) How many downloads on a given date
2) From what countries did the downloads come from
3) On what platforms did the download

Also, the name of the download file tells us the AOO version, the
language and platform.

To automate the collection of statistics I wrote some python scripts,
which you can find here:

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/devtools/aoo-stats/

The main one is here:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/devtools/aoo-stats/detail-by-day.py

That gets the detailed statistics for a range of dates for a list of
download files.

We have another script that looks at the top countries for downloading
a given file:

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/devtools/aoo-stats/countries.py

That might be a good way to get the country analysis you wanted.

  So my first question is
  - what does a MAC page have to do here. MAC is a supported platform,
 not
  third party ?
  - why does the porting page not have a link to the mac page ?

The Mac version used to be a port (you can still find outdated
information around, with the name Aqua Port), but it has been a fully
supported version since 3.0.0 or around.

Yes, OOo 3.0 was our first version with Mac as fully supported platform.

So the porting page does not link to it since it's not a port. And the
URL is... well, historical, but I wouldn't oppose to move it outside
porting/ if we can setup redirects that won't break search engines.

+1 for just redirecting to our download page.

a redirect will work but who will miss the page? We should be more open
to delete outdated content and simply drop it. We have too many outdated
pages that help nobody and are more confusing than useful.

I don't recall anything about this particular topic in the past but it
seems your new information could be just popped into the /porting/mac
index page with a nice little top note that says something like ...

Macintosh is now part of the standard Apache OpenOffice product and not a
separate port

or words to that effect, subsititute your new content for the porting
page, and direct folks to the download page.

Would that work?

Re: Reopening the Vietnamese Forum

Hi Guys,

Well, the spam had been removed before it was locked, so that should not be
a problem.

The existing user accounts - those could be disabled, yes of course.

So - I understand there is a new person to act as the admin and that is the
reason for the re-opening, which I think is great BTW. I take it from the
earlier email that the new admin still needed to setup their account on the
en forum...or not, I don't know really - kind of a problem having me in
this loop, as I have no internet access on a regular basis and as you can
see am not able to get connected every day.

Anyhow - I just jumped over there and logged in - yup my account still
works - but imacat has all the same access rights.

Which brings me to my account - honestly it is not a good idea to leave an
admin account laying around unused like that - I had expected imacat to
delete it. I'm saying that purely from a good practices stand point.

Here we are though. I'll be on-line a few times this week and if this needs
doing (delete old accounts, etc) certainly I'll help with that -
afterwards, given my circumstances it does not make a lot of sense to leave
the account laying around dormant, as I already said :).

*laughing* just give me marching orders and I'll carry them out

Do you already have a blog account? If not, start a new thread and
propose yourself as an editor, to get lazy consensus. Then you can
open a ticket with Infra per these instructions:

 http://www.apache.org/dev/infra-contact#what-we-need-to-know

Then we can give you editor rights to the blog.

As for the photos, I'm not sure I had any deep thoughts here. The
fact that they are vintage photos was primarily a result of seeking
interesting, fun, relevant, public domain images that could be used on
the blog. So that led to Flickr Commons which aggregates such imagery
from various national archives and libraries. But I'm open to other
 ideas.

because it the subject started here but I think it's time to move it to the
 marketing list.

OK - I have not updated much on the wiki as of yet - had planned on
getting some done today, but afraid not to be.

I did upload a first template:

Notice on this the WHY frame is waiting for input - I think I've got a
fairly lucid set of styles and as you will see it is only the outer page,
so will make an update tomorrow for the second half.

Just now noticed there is a direct request for an editable copy of the
flyer for SME from the other week, looks like it will be translated to
German, at least I hope so. The ree

Raphael,

I don't think we can effectively chase down every group or page. We should
follow up on malicious pages though.
I did a shallow search in the results. There is one fb page with recent
announcements but doesn't look malicious.
Here is the page: https://www.facebook.com/ApacheOpenOffice
Not sure who is running it though. Doesn't look malicious though.

I am putting a deadline for the idea submission and discussion in 30
days, November 9th, 2013. Once we reach the deadline, we will have
a separate discussion for optimizing for the best user experience.

This is not a contest or a call for public proposals. This is regular,
needs to be done, no-bikeshedding-please work. When the deadline Nov
9th arrives, if there is more than one viable solution, we will try to
reach consensus without a end user vote. eg. We will not be doing
what we did with the logo, that was a special case because it is the
 face of AOO.

The About dialog does not look good with the orb in the header, the old
version looked nicer than the current one

Old version:
http://people.apache.org/~arielch/images/AboutDialog.png

Current one, removing the orb from the header:
http://people.apache.org/~arielch/images/AboutDialog410.png

To test different approaches, just replace about.png in the program
folder (where soffice.exe is located), for example with this one
http://people.apache.org/~arielch/images/about.png (there is no need to
restart the application).

I agree AOO needs a fresher look and I like there is a stipulated deadline.
Will hope to contribute.
