My Introduction into the Apache OpenOffice Project

2014-03-11 Thread Jupiter Weinman
Hello Apache Users,

My name is Matt Weinman. This is the first time I've ever joined an open source

group. I am interested in gaining experience in the field of technical
writing. I'm a
published writer in the creative writing field, which I know is much
different, but
am wanting to gain experience in technical writing.

My Introduction

2014-03-11 Thread Jupiter Weinman
 Hello Members of Apache OpenOffice,

My name is Matthew Weinman. I am interested in gaining knowledge
and experience
in the field of technical writing. I am a published author of fiction,
which I know is
much different, and have recently graduated from a small college with an English
degree.

I know very little about the field of technical writing, but feel
with my background
I would be able to develop the skills necessary to make a career in
tech-writing.
Since I've never been in a group such as this, I'm wondering, How do I even
get started?

The, 'Introduction to Contributing,' page advised me to send an
email to this
account, then, I would be on the mailing list. I'm excited to start and any
information on the field of technical writing would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Matthew Weinman

Just started up my old MacBook that runs OS X ver 10.6.8
The Download Apache OpenOffice has incorrect text. It says:
Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1 for Mac OS X (10.6 or older) ... is not
available. Click here for the previous version 4.0.1

It does download 4.0.1 when clicked.

Have you done already a reload?

Yes.

Because with my dry test the string is shown correct:

Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 Beta for Mac OS X (10.6 or older) ...

I'm talking about the string for downloading 4.0.1
It states:
Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1 for Mac OS X (10.6 or older) ... is not
available.

ups, sorry. I'm still in yellow mode. ;-)

It seems there is an old code part.

Please test again here:

Thanks

Marcus

The info for downloading Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1 is now correct for OS X
ver 10.6.

However, the info for Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 Beta no longer says it is
not available for OS X ver 10.6.
4.1 requires OS X ver. 10.7 or newer.

I think I got the issue. Please check again here:

[Bug 124386] Improve Help for Version Selector

2014-03-11 Thread Herbert Duerr
Members of our QA team requested a clarification of the Version field
used in our bugzilla instance. There are other terms that could need
some clarification too.

So before I request ASF-Infra to change our bugzilla installation by
using the patch [1], I'd like to ask for lazy consensus to request this
change in our bugzilla installation.

[1] https://issues.apache.org/ooo/attachment.cgi?id=82837action=diff

In particular the help text for version should be changed from
The version field defines the version of the software the bug was
found in.

to
The oldest version of the software the bug can be found in.,

Also the help text for assigned to should be changed from
The person in charge of resolving the ${terms.bug}.
to
The person in charge of progressing the ${terms.bug}.
because we sometimes need more info, specific testing, etc. from others.

The help text for operating system should be changed from
The operating system the $terms.bug was observed on.
to
The operating systems the $terms.bug can be observed on.
because AOO problems are often impacting multiple platforms.

Since many entries in our bugzilla database are not about bugs, but
about new features or enhancements I'd also like to use the term issue
instead of bug, when Bugzilla refers to such an entry.

This might be confusing, because we have a separate field for QA
Contact. We've been using that field for the person who is testing
the feature.

Maybe, to be clear, assigned to could say something like The
*developer* in charge of progressing...

The help text for operating system should be changed from

Re: 4.1. Regressions

2014-03-11 Thread Rainer Bielefeld

Hi,

I think Bugzilla Help
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/describekeywords.cgi tells it all.
There only is no common sense whether key word should be used also for
very old regressions (regression in OOo 1.0.1 compared to OOo 1.0.0),
from developer's point of view only regressions in AOO 3.4-dev and later
are of interest.

https://www.mail-archive.com/qa@openoffice.apache.org/msg01787.html

Generally problems with newly integrated features can not be
regressions. But if the code of a newly integrated feature damages an
older function so that it does not work correctly since integration,
that damage deserves key word regression.

But I do not think that many regression key words will have to be added.
The problem with the Bugs in the list is that at least one of following
mistakes is in data for the Bugs:

* Version has been changed to 4.1 in error, example:
(Bug 105492 - Text Orientation Degrees Entry Field
* It has not been tested with what Version the
  bug has appeared, example:
(Bug 124259 - mathvariant=normal is ignored on import of .mml file)

So far my personal thoughts, what are result of long co-working in open
source projects,

CU

Issues

2014-03-11 Thread David Beanblossom
I have been building a house and have spent way too much time generating
spreadsheets lately since the project is winding down. I have observed what
I believe are defects in your calc program. Such as:

. I haven't found a way to change the default fonts in Calc. They
are always Arial 10. I have change the OpenOffice Writer to what I want,
but not in Calc.

. Spell check does not work in Calc although it tells you everything
is OK and there is no misspelling.

. I have a file with multiple sheets. In one file, sheet #2 shows
data, but it is blank in page preview and will not print. Yet the data is
right in front of me.

. The header and footers drive me nuts. I can't turn off the header
Sheet 1 nor the footer Page 1. I have to go into every sheet and delete
them every time I open a spreadsheet. If you can turn them off or make a
default, your Help button doesn't know it. And, if I do delete them and
later want to add a header, I can't. The header and footer are grayed out
in Edit and cannot be added under Insert. What is the deal???

I will write more when I remember the other irritations of Calc.
