We already have a cvs module named 'extensions' in the 'util' project.

This situation (a module in one project is named like another project)
is prone to cause confusion. Unfortunately we already have at least one
case of this situation (module util/tools vs. project tools), but IMHO
we should proliferate it any more.

The same holds true for 'scripting', as there is a module with this very
 name in project 'framework'.
This leaves 'addon' as the only candidate:
 addon.openoffice.org +1

The modules are not visible to the outside world except when you deal
with cvs and getting source code from it. As far as I expect the new
project is not a coding project but a documentation and content
providing project so I think we can bear this name clash.

OTOH addon is a bad as scripting because *both* are technical terms
that just describe a single aspect of what the project is about.

extensions is much better suited for the project: it is a
non-technical term and it is understandable by everyone. It describes
the project as something about extending OOo by everything that adds
functionality to it, be it Add-Ons, Add-Ins, other UNO components or
macros, templates etc.

Besides that it would be nice to use a name that sounds familiar to
developers outside OOo - extensions are well known from the Mozilla
project.

So +1 for extensions.

Best regards,
Mathias

my vote for extensions, as the other two words confuse newcomers
because of the mentioned reasons (addon is already a certain term in
the API, scripting excludes major languages like C++ and Java).

please stop with this kind of arguments. We can simply change this
source modules if really necessary (i would volunteer if that would make
problems). We are searching for a good name for a project independent of
any build and environment issues.

[dev] new incubator : Call for Name

2005-10-26 Thread Laurent Godard

Hi all

Following the OOoCon, i will setup the new incubtaor project i proposed
on my presentation

http://marketing.openoffice.org/ooocon2005/presentations/friday_c8.sxi

to sumarize, the purpose is not to compete with api project but to help
it, puting a bridge from new addons developpers to it.

The new incubator project will adresse these points

- help new commers to deal with first steps in addon production
Help in their naive-lang may be nedded
- build generic tools implementing best-pratices for each scripting
languages so that a maximum number of addons share the same developping
guidelines and same look and feel

- provides a browsable repository
- provides a tool for users to install in 'one-click' an addon from a list

see the presentation for more details

The long term goal is to bring OOo usefull features through addon (in
whatever language supported) and integrate it in OOo if popular

You are all welcommed on board. There is a lot of work to do and not
especially hard coding but also translation and new commer welcoming
Obviously, some volunteers dealing with basic, python, java, c++ are
welcommed to help building the tools (i say, a generic wizard,
translation mechanism compatible with OOo translation tools ...)

For now, it appears that this incubator needs a new name as it is more
than scripting and we need something that identifies all the concerned
levels (dev, repository, end-users)

Here are the propositions

- addon.openoffice.org (already 1 vote)
- extensions.openoffice.org (already 3 votes)
- scripting.openoffice.org (already 0 vote) -i leave it in case

We are actually discussing on the dev@scripting.openoffice.org mailing
list. Feel free to join the discussion there
I plan to close this discussion on friday and move to the new
putTheNameHere.openoffice.org list when up

Thanks again and join us

Laurent
