Re: [OSM-dev] Mapnik rendering: Zoom-Level to Width/Height

2009-10-15 Thread Peter Körner
Hi Frederik

Are you aware of the nik2img tool which does pretty much everything
you write here - including specifying the zoom level?

No I wasn't aware of that, but it wasn't so much hassle to write my own
(just learned how cool python is - it took only about 2 hours).

I'll have a look at nik2img regarding the zoomlevel calculation, but
Ian's formulas I don't think this will be a problem.

Re: [OSM-dev] Distributing a VirtualBox HD-File

2009-10-15 Thread Jeremy Adams
 Hi Ian

Peter, I can mirror/host it on my shared server account. I've got
unlimited bandwidth and they seem to be pretty good about allowing
  large file downloads.
 Of course I'm interested!

 Next steps will be:
 1. complete last tasks
 2. make a torrent of it and publish it on osm-talk (soft-opening for
 technicians to filter out bugs)
 3. completion of documentation tutorials for the wiki
 4. release - this is when i'll come back to your offer

 Peter

Peter,

If needed, I can also put a copy on my planet mirror. Just ping the list
once you've got something ready for release.

Hi do you have a script that does the translatewiki 2 yaml, or how is
that handled? Would be nice to have some checks of the validity of
 translatewiki translations

It's done by Translatewik itself through an export driver. The code is
all in /extensions/Translate in the MediaWiki SVN:

What sort of validation checks were you interested in implementing?

 Hi thanks for your efforts.

Translations get commited periodically, usually every day or so. After
that happens they appear on the live site whenever TomH does another
sync. which is usually every 1-2 days or so.

However the Translatewiki sync last happened last Saturday. I don't
know why there hasn't been another update more recently. CC-ing it to
the Translatewiki guys so they can chime in.

Ah as it turns out Siebrand likes to go over the messages manually
when syncing them. Which is more effort than I was putting into it
when I was doing syncs :)

So since it's not in cron somewhere we can expect delays. It's not the
end of the world :)

I've made mistake in translation (in PLURAL (nodes)). I've forgot to
separate plural with |, and now you cannot see changesets with more nodes
than 1.

Could it be updated?

[OSM-dev] osmosis problem

2009-10-15 Thread AirWalker
Dear List,

I'd like to upload osm data (hungary.osm.bz2 form geofabrik) to a
database using osmosis.
If I try pgsql, I get the following error:

[josm-dev] Translations don't fit screen?

2009-10-15 Thread Frederik Ramm

Hi,

it is sad that German is a language in which it takes so much longer
to say things than in English. (The French probably have the same problem!)

In many JOSM dialogs, the text is cut off in the German version (see
attached upload dialog screenshot). Why does that happen - should the
dialog not adjust itself due to all the preferredSize magic in the UI
 components?

Is something broken with my fonts? Or do German translators just have to
learn to express themselves less profusely?

If I cannot get this fixed then I might have to switch back to using the
English JOSM version for the next German issue of the OSM book - what
good is having JOSM in your language if every second label ends in
...? (And as any i18n freak knows, there are definitely languages in
which the bit at the end matters most...)

Your system is fine. There just simply isn't enough space to fit that
string. I've had to alter numerous strings in Icelandic to less
optimal translations so that they can fit into a space designed for
e.g. three letter English words.

This can be solved in JOSM by being more generous about padding. And
designing UI dialogs so that long messages flow into another line
instead of under some other fixed UI element. But that takes some
work.

Yes it's not a problem inherent in the language / UI framework but
cramming too much into too little space:)
