Re: Ratis Features

2019-03-30 Thread Jitendra Pandey
Hi Karim,
Thanks for your interest in Apache Ratis. I have added you to Slack
channel.
These functionalities have been implemented, but configuration management
and snapshots are not fully tested.
It is expected that there would be more work in these areas as they get
tested and stabilized.
Performance and failure handling are some of the active areas of work
currently. For example, how ratis behaves with faulty network or disks.
Any work in this area would be a great help. If you are interested in
performance or failure handling, let us know we can discuss further.

Thanks
jitendra

2018-08-04 Thread Jitendra Pandey
Dear all,
I have updated the podling report for Ratis for the month of August at

Ratis

Ratis is a java implementation for RAFT consensus protocol

Ratis has been incubating since 2017-01-03.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. Work towards a GA release.
  2. Establish a release cadence.
  3. More committers, PPMC members.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

None

How has the community developed since the last report?

7 new contributors have been added. Total 50 contributors currently.
2 new committers have been added. Total 20 committers currently.

How has the project developed since the last report?

Ratis-0.2.0 release was made available on 15-July-2018.
18 new commits.
Apache HBase community members have shown interest in using Ratis for WAL.

How would you assess the podling's maturity?
Please feel free to add your own commentary.

[X] Initial setup : Mostly done, some improvements to pre-commit, nightly
processes needed.
[ ] Working towards first release : 0.2.0 release done recently, planning
started for a GA release.
[ ] Community building : New contributors and committers are being added.
More users are showing interest.
[ ] Nearing graduation : GA release, and community diversity are needed.

Date of last release:

Hi all,

I'd like to share a document that I've been working on for many months
with Jitendra about building a distributed-log "recipe" on top of Ratis.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Su5py_T5Ytfh9RoTTX2s20KbSJwBHVxbO7ge5ORqbCk/edit?usp=sharing

The primary use case is for Apache HBase, replacing its HDFS-backed
write-ahead log construct with something a bit more flexible. Our hope
is that by building a distributed log with Ratis, HBase could observe
similar levels of performance as we do with HDFS and better enable our
flexibility to run on "dynamic" cloud IaaS platforms.

At the bottom of that document, you'll find a high level breakdown of
work items for both Ratis as well as HBase. My hope is that both of
these will be able to be worked on concurrently. Furthermore, while
HBase is a primary "customer" for the work, I hope that you would find a
DistributedLog recipe for Ratis (what we've been calling the
"LogService") generally reusable for the Ratis community.

Please let me know what you think (either on the mailing list or via
comments on the google-doc). Thanks!

issues to solve, your current progress, and how to submit my code. Thank you.

You can check the usual requirements of an apache release:

   • Signatures
   • Checksums
   • License and notice files
   • Disclaimer file (incubator!)
   • Build the project from the source code package (mvn clean install
 assembly:single -DskipTests=true )
   • Licence headers

The binary papckage can be smoketested with:

 ./examples/bin/start-all.sh
 ./examples/bin/client.sh assign --name a --value 2
 ./examples/bin/client.sh get --name a

 Starting with my vote: +1

 Marton

You are already an admin, so you should be able to add contributors.
The guidelines are mostly inherited from Hadoop, but we need to spell them out
explicitly.

+1, Great work. Let’s merge the awesome website.

On 12/22/17, 7:06 AM, "Elek, Marton" wrote:

Hi,

RATIS-5 feature branch contains the proposed site for
ratis.incubator.apache.org.

The final patch is uploaded to the RATIS-5 issue [1]

This is the initial version which is created according to the Apache
policies [2]. It uses hugo (a single binary site generator) and uses
bootstrap based styles and contains a minimal set of content to start.

This is a formal vote request to merge RATIS-5 patch (squashed version
of RATIS-5 branch) to a new branch (asf-site-source) and commit the
rendered version to another branch (asf-site). (I will ask apache infra
to use asf-site branch as the source of the website and create jenkins
job to regenerate site in case of source change).

Please check the site and vote. Rendered version is also attached to
ratis-rendered.tar.gz and can be checked at
https://elek.github.io/ratis-site/ together with the source) but please
also check the rendering process if you can (just call hugo from the
ratis-site directory and check the results in the public folder)

Unfortunatelly this vote is opened just a few days before christmas so
it will close no earlier than one week from today (29/12), to be sure
everybody had the opportunity to check it and vote.

Thanks,
Marton

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. Setup Jenkins (In Progress)
  2. Add new committers
  3. Work towards a beta release

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

*   Your project name
* A brief description of your project, which assumes no knowledge of
the project or necessarily of its field

* Any issues that the Incubator PMC or ASF Board might wish/need to be

* How has the community developed since the last report
* How has the project developed since the last report.
* How does the podling rate their own maturity.

This should be appended to the Incubator Wiki page at:

Note: This is manually populated. You may need to wait a little before
this page is created from a template.

Two questions:

1. Is there any status equivalent to Hadoop PATCH_AVAILABLE? What should
I do if the patch is read for review?

2. I need to turn on clean-shade profile for 'mvn clean' to delete the
generated files. It was a little bit confising for me, as a simple clean
doesn't delete all the created files. Not a big deal, but is there any
reason why it's not run automaticaly during a maven clean? I if it just
beacuse some maven issues/limitation I would be happy to investigate it...
