At the fontconfig level all kinds of renaming tricks are possible (see the

Re: wine font changes system look and feel

2012-06-06 Thread Kamil Paral
We could of course aim for a dual-solution: Let
wine-tahoma-fonts put the fonts in the wine font dir (mandatory for
wine) and add a wine-tahoma-fonts-system package (names suggestions
welcome) which also puts the fonts in the system wide font path
 (optional).

I believe this would be the best solution available.

The -system package can contain just a symlink to the wine-specific font
directory.

If this would be a feasible solution I would still like some opinions
 if
this should be done for both fonts or just for the reported bugs
 about
 the bold version.

I wonder, are all wine-provided fonts just (non-identical) replacements for
Microsoft fonts, or is this the case only for WineTahoma?

If there are likely to be similar issues with other wine fonts, could we just
install all of them to wine-specific font directory and then create a new
package wine-fonts-system that would depend on wine-fonts and installed
symlinks into system-wide font directory for all the wine fonts?

The result would be:
* If you install wine, all wine fonts are installed just for wine, the rest of
the system is not touched.
* If you install wine-fonts-system, all the wine fonts are available
system-wide.

For the ones that end users are actually likely to have, which

That unfortunately does not translate to fewer BIOS variations. I had
a case in the last three months of a system from a major OEM that did
not follow any of the common conventions for their desktop systems for
accessing the configuration menu during POST.

This is particularly common with all those dinky/funky/cute small form
factor home and media PCs; they just seem to toss in whatever firmware
was lying around the factory floor that day and hope for the best. ;)

This is the reality that Peter is talking about when he describes the
difficulty of documenting this sufficiently well. Considering the
whole of the interwebs can't manage to document how to enter the
configuration menu for all systems I'd say he's got a point.

I'd also guess that a disproportionate number of owners of these
systems are in the POST my what to the who? camp.

But if there's not going to be a systemd-libs subpackage, any issues you

Upgrading with Anaconda causes the same 'magic' to be run.

Despite having to do more steps manually, I had better success with
upgrading to F17 using yum than with the other methods.

One problem with upgrading using Anaconda from F15 was when it
encountered the qt-examples package. Anaconda just reported an error
in the middle of the upgrade and offered no way to continue. Recovering
from that was quite painful. Further investigation showed the likely
reason was a case of the known symlink vs. directory rpm issue.
With yum upgrade the issue affects only the one package, but allows the
transaction to finish.

instead of distro-sync. I don't recall the specific symptoms, and didn't
investigate further since they went away with a yum erase --remove-leaves
systemd.i686. However, they might also have been caused by one of systemd's
dependencies.

Anyway, thanks for the clarifications.

Perl 5.16 rebuild

2012-06-06 Thread Petr Pisar
Hello,

I'm starting with perl 5.16 rebuild.

All changes will be comitted into `master' git branch and built into separate
`f18-perl' build-root. That means standard rawhide will be unaffected
(including the perl_bootstrap macro) until we merge the f18-perl build-root
back to f18.

I use special script to handle the rebuild (updating sources, computing
dependencies, submitting builds to koji, checking for build result, etc.), so
you do not need to build into f18-perl too. Actually it harms my script
because it looses synchronization resulting in double rebuild commits and
builds which is not necessary.

You can continue to develop in f18, I will check in your changes into
f18-build later.

You can watch the plan and progress at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/perl5.16.

I'd like to thank to Paul for breaking (hopefully) all the cyclic
dependencies.

Having two systemd packages installed isn't necessarily a problem, rpm's
color concept on ELF objects should mean that x86_64 should win
wherever the two packages' files collide, which should only be
in /usr/*bin.  It's still not the prettiest thing in the world, I admit;
I'd be happier if there were a systemd-libs even if it were effectively
not optional.

Does rpm handle binaries' colors everywhere, or just in selected
locations? I'm especially curious about /usr/lib.

As long as systemd.rpm has content that is platform-dependent, then
it is likely that there will be overlap in some files; in this
case, such as x86_64 and i686 versions of the same binary executable
file. In theory the rpm feature of executable flavors should resolve
such an overlap (in favor of .x86_64 in this case), but this feature
relies on the corresponding .x86_64 and .i686 packages always having
the same n-v-r. The mirror system isn't that reliable [I see a sync
failure a few times per year], so the dreaded yum error protected
multilib versions likely will occur.

Update impacting users (not so many I hope)

2012-06-06 Thread Simone Caronni
Hello,

I need an advice on how to push an update without impacting users too much.

There's a problem in the current shipped Bacula in Fedora 17 related to
shared libraries.
This is related to the fact that upstream changed things so many times to
remove the multiple builds in the past 6 months.
I'll try to make the story as short as possible:

Starting from 5.0.3, there were multiple binaries built from the same
source inside the package, lots of symlinks in the alternatives system and
lot of patches to support the various database backends.

Starting from 5.2.x, upstream developers moved all the common code into
libraries and made the selection of the database through a single symlink
on a versioned library.
At the beginning this was done with multiple versioned libraries offering a
single shared object name and tricks like that. This made packaging almost
impossible (packages requiring libraries contained in themselves, yum going
crazy) and ended up with the developers changing everything a couple of
times (and the spec file followed, with %ghost, etc.).

In the latest incarnation of the package that was released with Fedora 17
(5.2.6-2.fc17 - unchaged for a long time), the backend was chosen with an
alternative (+ a slave):

# alternatives --config libbaccats.so

There are 3 programs which provide 'libbaccats.so'.

  SelectionCommand
---
   1 /usr/lib64/libbaccats-mysql-5.2.6.so
 + 2 /usr/lib64/libbaccats-sqlite3-5.2.6.so
*  3   /usr/lib64/libbaccats-postgresql-5.2.6.so

Enter to keep the current selection[+], or type selection number:

The problem is that when I tried to install 5.2.7-2.fc17 from a freshly
built package I ended up in this situation:

# alternatives --config libbaccats.so

There are 6 programs which provide 'libbaccats.so'.

  SelectionCommand
---
   1 /usr/lib64/libbaccats-mysql-5.2.6.so
 + 2 /usr/lib64/libbaccats-sqlite3-5.2.6.so

   5 /usr/lib64/libbaccats-sqlite3-5.2.7.so
   6 /usr/lib64/libbaccats-postgresql-5.2.7.so

I fixed the thing in 5.2.7-3.fc17 (in koji), simply linking the unversioned
shared object to the alternatives file and removing the slave.

# alternatives --config libbaccats.so

   2 /usr/lib64/libbaccats-sqlite3.so
*+ 3 /usr/lib64/libbaccats-postgresql.so

What's the procedure to push this update into updates-testing (and

Re: Update impacting users (not so many I hope)

2012-06-06 Thread Simone Caronni
As suggested in bug 829219; another option could be to explicitly
check the state of the user's preferences, e.g.:

if readlink /etc/alternatives/libbaccats.so | grep --silent mysql; then
# set up for mysql backend
elif readlink /etc/alternatives/libbaccats.so | grep --silent sqlite; then
# set up for sqlite backend
else
# default to postgresql backend
fi

That approach would default to postgresql backend but would retain
previously-set preferences even on version updates.

Starting from 5.0.3, there were multiple binaries built from the same source
inside the package, lots of symlinks in the alternatives system and lot of
patches to support the various database backends.

Starting from 5.2.x, upstream developers moved all the common code into
libraries and made the selection of the database through a single symlink on
 a versioned library.

If Fedora decides to support Secure Boot, it needs to be distro-wide.

Could it be done in a pretend to be supported mode, somewhat
like having a known public grub key, and then provide some Linux
certified stickers :-) Then let grub load any OS, or chain load windows
 as usual.

That makes no sense at all.

 1) How would you get OEMs to support add that key?
 2) How do you prevent malware authors to use this public available key
 to sign there malware?

That is the part of pretend to be supported, just to avoid needing
users to go to some setup mode to disable secure boot, and then
offer other means of security audit, like a custom boot image for
an external device. For windows, it could be some certified bootable
DVD, that would be guaranteed to be clean, and from there run
anti virus, or any scanning tools.

Now back to reality ... how do you intend to support that?
Talking about how things should be done is nice and all but not
 really productive.

That suggestion is impractical for end users, but a way to do
a truly assurance that the system is secure (provided that it has
an as up to date as possible information on known exploits).

Anyway, I am pretty sure several distros will ignore this issue,
possibly until too late, and the end solution at worst, for
computers where secure boot cannot be disabled should
be to have someone providing a signed first stage loader
(until such key is revoked...)

[Guidelines Change] Changes to the Packaging Guidelines

2012-06-06 Thread Tom Callaway
Here is the latest set of changes to the Fedora Packaging Guidelines:

---

In Fedora, you can assume that the default shell (/bin/sh) is bash.
Thus, all scriptlets can safely assume that if they are running in shell
code, they are running within bash.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:ScriptletSnippets#Default_Shell

---

A bundling exception was granted for calibre to bundle their forked
version of pyPdf.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:No_Bundled_Libraries#Packages_granted_exceptions

---

A new set of MinGW guidelines are in place for Fedora 17+. These
guidelines reflect the existence of mingw32 and mingw64.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:MinGW

Older guidelines remain in place for older versions of Fedora (and RHEL
6 or older):

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:MinGW_Old

---

A section of the Ruby Guidelines concerning the appropriate place to
copy C extensions in the spec file template has been clarified and enhanced:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Ruby#Building_gems

---

Guidelines for usage of tmpfiles.d have been updated to better reflect
the current stage of Fedora and other Fedora guidelines. In summary:

* Dropped the irrelevant talk of both systemd and upstart
* Prefer talking of /run everywhere instead of /var/run
* Ship the packaged files in %{_prefix}/lib/tmpfiles.d/, not
  %{_sysconfdir}/tmpfiles.d/.
* Do not mark the files as %config and add an explanation why.
* Use the more usual 'd' specifier instead of 'D'.
* Nudge packagers into thinking about the permission mode of their
directories, rather than copying the 0710 dogmatically.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Tmpfiles.d

---
The systemd guidelines have been update to reflect the fact that unit
files should avoid using StandardOutput= or StandardError=. The default
is the right choice for almost all cases, and using the default allows
users to change global defaults in /etc/systemd/system.conf.

Also, all references to After=syslog.target have been dropped, as that
is no longer correct or relevant in current versions of Fedora.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Systemd

---

The packaging guidelines now mention that the %make_install macro (*not*
to be confused with %makeinstall) may be used instead of make
DESTDIR=%{buildroot}.

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Why_the_.25makeinstall_macro_should_not_be_used

---

A new section was added to the guidelines to indicate that Fedora uses
gcc as the compiler (for all languages that gcc supports). Packages may
only build with an alternative compiler to gcc if upstream does not
support gcc.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Compiler

---

These guidelines (and changes) were approved by the Fedora Packaging
Committee (FPC).

Many thanks to Kevin Fenzi, Hans de Goede, Vít Ondruch, Erik van
Pienbroek, Petr Pisar, Lennart Poettering, Michal Schmidt, Rahul
Sundaram, and all of the members of the FPC, for assisting in drafting,
refining, and passing these guidelines.

As a reminder: The Fedora Packaging Guidelines are living documents! If
you find something missing, incorrect, or in need of revision, you can
suggest a draft change. The procedure for this is documented here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Committee#GuidelineChangeProcedure

strategy with a fedorapeople repo of 3.3 if it's considered worthwhile
for those that wish to play. For gluster 3.3 I suggest a feature page
for F-18 / rawhide. Is it feasible for the missing hekafs features to
be merged into the 3.3 release train by October when F-18 is due to be
released?

I was under the impression that glusterfs would be automatically carried
forward from f17 into f18, as it apparently was from f16 into f17.

It will be carried forward but a major change of features and
enhancements is worth doing a feature page to advertise the feature
improvements (see the gnome feature page as an example[1] ), it's
something for marketing to use and allows you to also detail things
like the removal or merge of HekaFS.

F18 builds (of 3.2.6) are already available in koji. Until now I haven't
heard that a feature page is needed for 3.2.x (or 3.3.x) to be included in
f18. (But how to deprecate HekaFS on f18 once the glusterfs-3.3.0 build is
available.)

See above for feature page details. For deprecate HekaFS you add the
the appropriate obsoletes/provides as necessary to the gluster package
and follow the process for removing/obsoleteing a package in the wiki.

The features that are in HekaFS (in f16 and f17) will get merged into
glusterfs-3.3.1+, as I indicated previously, but I won't promise how many of
them will be there when f18 ships. We certainly hope that all of them will
be, but we aren't making any promises.

So that's something that can be documented in a feature page in the
wiki and updated as things progress through both the gluster devel
process and the fedora release process :)

Okay, as a slightly more detailed version:

You should follow the full feature process, to be put in the
FeatureList for F18. If you want to see what that process looks like,
you probably want to look at this diagram:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Policy/Process

And make your feature page according to the template noted on that
wiki page, and submit it to the feature wrangler (via a wiki category
change) so that they can have it approved by fesco, at which point it
can be added to the actual feature list :)

-robyn

The short version of this is that HekaFS used to be an independent set of
features on top of glusterfs that are now moving into the core of glusterfs.
That is a glusterfs community decision, not a fedora project per se.

When we update the gluster code in Fedora, we will get this change and the
hekafs packages will be obsolete.

Do we really need to create a feature page for that and follow the approval
process?

Seems too heavy weight to me for effectively rebasing a package...

thanks!

It is certainly not required. Feature process is a marketing and

Use it only where it makes sense. In this case, you only need it if you

---

The packaging guidelines now mention that the %make_install macro (*not*
to be confused with %makeinstall) may be used instead of make
DESTDIR=%{buildroot}.

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Why_the_.25makeinstall_macro_should_not_be_used

Thanks,

~tom
