the tragedy of Fedora Live USB conversion and what we can do about it

2014-07-31 Thread Kamil Paral
It's a well-known fact in our circles that third-party USB conversion tools
(like UNetbootin or Universal USB Installer) can't create Fedora Live USB
correctly. Unfortunately, it is not well known among our users (I see it very
often on test list, IRC, or local fedora.cz website/forums) and even
journalists. This is an article that was published yesterday showcasing
difficulties of Fedora installation process (translated from Czech by google
translate):

https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=autotl=enjs=yprev=_thl=csie=UTF-8u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.zive.cz%2Fclanky%2Fkdyz-mate-stesti-linux-je-vyborny-system%2Fnotebook-a-fedora-20%2Fsc-3-a-174766-ch-93591%2Fdefault.aspx%23articleStartedit-text=

The purpose of that article is to highlight the fact that Linux has made a lot
of progress in the last years, but the results are still a bit like a Russian
roulette. Fedora, in this case, is shown as the negative example. The website
itself is not known for high quality articles here in CZ, but they are quite
popular and have a large reader base. They are mainly Windows-focused, but with
the recent advancement of Linux on all fronts (mainly in gaming), they're
clearly willing to provide more Linux coverage - and they picked Fedora as
their second option right after Ubuntu, which is great. Provided they're able
to install it in the first place...

The result of Live USB boot attempt is often this (from the article):
http://www.zive.cz/uploadedfiles/38598240.png

I wonder, is there something we can do to improve the situation?
* We have no control over third-party USB conversion tools.
* Even if we file bug reports, they are often ignored (Adam Williamson said he
tried to communicate with UNetbootin, unsuccessfully).
* Third-party USB installers fail for many distributions, like OpenSUSE
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Live_USB_stick or Arch
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/USB_Flash_Installation_Media#Using_UNetbootin.
* Still, they are hugely popular, because Ubuntu and its derivatives dominate
the market and those tools usually work fine for them.
* The users simply don't know that those tools shouldn't be used, and some
others should be used instead.

I don't known the technical details about USB conversion process, but maybe we
could collectively think of some changes that would improve the current state
at least a bit?

Some ideas:
1. First and foremost, we should obviously consider whether we can make some
compose changes that would make the image more compatible with third-party USB
installers. That's very technical, but I hope relevant people could provide
some comments here.

2. Second, we could make USB conversion instructions more visible on our pages.
If you look at http://fedoraproject.org/, there's a big Download Now! button,
which gives you the ISO, but you'll never encounter any suggestions what to do
with it. That's only available at
http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora#desktops in the right column (which is
nice and quite visible, I think). Could we provide the same information on the
front page?

3. Third, if everything goes wrong and you end up in a dracut shell, could we
at least advise our users what went wrong and what to do with it? Because the
current output is very scary and very hard to decipher by a general user:
http://www.zive.cz/uploadedfiles/38598240.png
So what if we detected that we failed to find a partition having Fedora-Live
in its name (thus most probably an incorrectly created LiveUSB), and in that
case printed out something like this?

***
* It seems Fedora Live image could not have been accessed. This often happens *
* when Live USB media is incorrectly created by a third-party USB installer. *
* Please refer to official documentation on fedoraproject.org for proper *
* instructions.   *
***
(native speakers will surely make it sound better)

This would help our users a lot to understand what's wrong and how to fix it.
Also, it would be much easier to google out the problem. If we included the
same text on our LiveUSB instructions page
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_and_use_Live_USB, it could
receive a very good position in online search results.

So, what do you think? From my experience, the inability to boot USB is very
common and I'd even say it's one of the major problems why new users walk away
from Fedora. Because, understand, they don't even know something is wrong on
their end. That scary dracut error looks like a problem in Fedora, and
therefore often their conclusion is Fedora is so broken it can't even boot.
If we try to mitigate the problem at least with clear explanations, we will not
only discourage less users, but also decrease the number of negative reviews by
journalists.

rubygem-syntax license revised from 'Public Domain' to 'BSD'

2014-07-31 Thread Vít Ondruch

Dear all,

I have updated rubygem-syntax from version 1.0.0 to version 1.2.0. The
gem used to be accompanied by email discussion, which claimed the
license to be 'Public Domain'. However, the library was picked up by
different upstream and now it ships under BSD license.

Yes. My concern is that glibc is using Rawhide as their continuous
integration sandbox to shake out bugs as opposed to doing it elsewhere and
just taking care of integration of releases when they are ready. If this
viewed as a gap that needs to be fixed, that's fine for now.

The changes in the rebase should be minor since we've
been tracking master the whole time.
I remember a similar process causing problems in Rawhide earlier and Jared
Smith talking with the glibc team to ensure that only regular releases hit
 rawhide.

It would be nice if we're careful in staging ABI changes in the glibc master
into Rawhide so it doesn't break. (Possibly something we can do with
 Taskotron?)

Ultimately glibc as a core library should be following what the rest
of the packages / features in development change process are required
to do IE anything that might change the ABI should have landed before
the mass rebuild so it can be addressed as part of that and hence be
in a stable state at the same time as the other features are due to be
complete.

The fact that a core library that's stability is critical to the
distribution as a whole doesn't bother to adhere to this and while
having gone through the hoops of putting in a feature change basically
then proceeded to completely ignore the requirements of said process
(ie they dumped a bunch of stuff on the wiki and haven't bothered to
revisit it and update it since) is some what pathetic in my mind.

What happens if between now and when 2.20 goes GA there's a
requirement of an ABI break and we need to rebuild a chuck of the
distribution? It doesn't affect them as they don't need to do the work
to make that happen.

I'm actually not concerned about Rawhide being used like this. That's
kind of the purpose of Rawhide.

However the previous problem(s -- multiple) was glibc using
non-Rawhide for integration testing, especially just while we were
trying to stablise Fedora for a release:

But 2.20 is a stable branch, right? So this shouldn't be a concern now.

On that regard, the new pkgdb UI is just like the old one, you cannot take a

As an upstream policy, glibc does not break ABI[1] and we've tried to
adhere to this ever since I started contributing to glibc (which is ~2
years ago). Any ABI break that happens is a bug and the ABI impact
Carlos talks about is mainly due to such bugs being discovered in
rawhide, which again is not very often.

Siddhesh

[1] We did unknowingly break ABI in S/390 in 2.19 and that will likely
be fixed in 2.20 and require at least a partial rebuild (perl and
its modules), but you would have needed the mass rebuild even if
we would have directly introduced a 2.20 release.

But 2.20 is a stable branch, right? So this shouldn't be a concern

Yes, it is in what we call, a slushy freeze right now. Changes going
in are mostly regression fixes and other fixes that should not have
any generated code impact. There is however one change that the s/390
folks will find painful - s/390 broke ABI in 2.19 without a proper
justification and that is now going to be reverted in 2.20 (and in
2.19, but we don't really care about 2.19 right now).

extensive (but obviously not exhaustive) testsuite and as a result it
is usually safe (as safe one would consider rawhide) to rebase from
the latest commit. I've been doing regular rebases for a while now
(almost a year AFAICT) and IIRC we have had just one serious problem
last week where i686 boxes got bricked. In the end it was found to be
a gcc bug that miscompiled some code in glibc.

That said, we still need a nicer way to back out from a broken glibc
update into the previous known-to-work glibc similar to how the kernel
does it and not need a rescue disk for it.

We're absolutely not going to rebase master in non-rawhide. Our
intention is to get glibc 2.20 release out before Fedora turns beta.

But 2.20 is a stable branch, right? So this shouldn't be a concern
 now.

To expand on this just a bit, the s/390 ABI break was done by the
s/390 glibc port maintainers and was done intentionally. This wasn't
a oops, we accidentally broke the ABI bug. It was something the
s/390 maintainers decided was of minimal concern and it turns out they
were wrong. In my experience, glibc goes above and beyond maintaining
their software. This s/390 incident is an anomaly in an otherwise
very controlled and well-run software project.

yeah, it can happen, the hardest thing was to come up with a solution
that would allow to follow the regular Rawhide build process using

If you figured out what was going on in time you could even recover
with a yum downgrade in you had a root shell open (which I was able to do).

So not everyone using i686 got their machines bricked.
