Hi all, It's GNOME 3.18.1 release this week and I'll be wrangling the builds for Fedora. Same drill as with previous megaupdates: if you are helping with builds, please use f23-gnome build target. $ fedpkg build --target f23-gnome I'll take care of submitting them all in a single bodhi update ticket later this week. Orphaning openct and ctapi-common on Rawhide
Hello all, I've orphaned openct and ctapi-common packages on Rawhide as I do not use them anymore. If nobody picks them they can be safely retired by the automated process as nothing seems to depend on them. If you pick them, please consider mailing me and asking for transfer of the ownership also for the branched releases. I disagree. This kind of integration patches is what a distribution is for to begin with. If users wanted to use vanilla upstream tarballs with no modifications whatsoever, they'd use LFS. (And in practice, even LFS has patches they make you manually apply, because the tarballs won't even COMPILE together as is.) They are in the middle of an infrastructure transition and decided to not do any more branches on the old infrastructure, which is really an RPM Fusion problem and not a Fedora one. Right now, RPM Fusion simply does not support F23 (Branched) or Rawhide. (This also has nothing to do with ABI changes WITHIN a release, which are the topic here. ABI changes from one release to the next are normal and expected. It is simply not realistic to expect all third-party F22 packages to just work on F23.) So use a released version of Fedora, those are supported just fine (though rebuilds for ABI changes, where needed, might take slightly longer than usual). When they were using the old working infrastructure, RPM Fusion had no problems keeping up with Fedora, even Rawhide. Required rebuilds were typically pushed the same day as the Fedora change. Hopefully this will be the case again once the new infrastructure is finalized. Sure, but most non-trivial applications do call dlopen somewhere, so this statement, while technically true, is entirely useless in practice. > For callers of dlopen you also add every possible plugin they might load > to the tree. Every single shared library on the system is a "possible plugin they might load". Therefore, the result you will get is again entirely useless. (All applications are in the potentially conflicting set.) And this is not purely theoretical, there are applications (and libraries) dlopening all sorts of system libraries, from OpenSSL to GTK+, directly (not through a plugin that is linked to the system library) for varying reasons. And yes, this GTK+ example is real: $ nm -D /usr/lib64/libQtGui.so.4 | grep Gtk 003ffee56680 T _ZN9QGtkStyle11qt_metacallEN11QMetaObject4CallEiPPv 003ffee56630 T _ZN9QGtkStyle11qt_metacastEPKc [snip 32 lines] 003fff2d7e40 V _ZTI9QGtkStyle 003ffeec09a4 V _ZTS9QGtkStyle 003fff2d7e80 V _ZTV9QGtkStyle so QGtkStyle is defined here, not in a plugin, but: $ ldd /usr/lib64/libQtGui.so.4 | grep gtk [nothing] (This is GTK+ 2, by the way.) An application linking both GTK+ 3 and Qt 4 will crash if and only if the QGtkStyle ends up getting used at runtime (which is a decision at C++ class level, not at file level). Good luck figuring that out with automated static analysis, especially on the binaries only. > In any case you may get false positives, but you'll get no false > negatives. Either you get essentially the whole distribution as false positives (which makes the results entirely useless) or you WILL get false negatives. > The rest of your argument reduces to "we haven't written the tool to do > that yet", which, fair enough, but we're talking maybe 500 lines of > python, and an optional and small amount of package metadata to trim > the false-positive tree for dlopen. I think packaging software properly is a much more effective way to spend our time than making third- party blobs work as is, especially WHEN those binaries are actually Free Software and can thus be packaged properly from source. Sure, the USERS should not have to become packagers, but the existing packagers should not waste their time on compatibility with binary blobs, but spend it usefully on packaging Free Software from source. In this case showing the crlibm and libscs spec files for EPEL7 branch and doing a couple of informal reviews should be enough for sponsorship. Unfortunately I don't have time for another sponsoree at the moment. > >>Is that the only viable option at the moment? Adopt it myself? > >I'm afraid that's how it works for most packages. Many of us are (still) amateurs and there are a lot of people ready to lend a hand in this community, so don't be afraid to get your feet wet, please. You can compute this statically. You know the DT_NEEDED tree for every dynamic object. For applications that don't call dlopen (themselves or in their dependencies), that's good enough, any instance of two conflicting libraries in the same tree is a bug. For callers of dlopen you also add every possible plugin they might load to the tree. In any case you may get false positives, but you'll get no false negatives. The rest of your argument reduces to "we haven't written the tool to do that yet", which, fair enough, but we're talking maybe 500 lines of python, and an optional and small amount of package metadata to trim the false-positive tree for dlopen. If you consider that scale of problem to be a "giant scary minefield" I'm not sure we have common grounds for communication. - ajax -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

As for the suggestion, it's not always trivial to replace a function. Sometimes you'll get away with a patch that replaces a single use with an updated call. Other times you'll find you need to re-structure things to use a new way of doing stuff, possibly even re-design. If you really want maintainers to take that on you can call them lazy for not doing so, but you might find you're shouting them at their backs as they walk away. -- imalone http://ibmalone.blogspot.co.uk -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

(And in > practice, even LFS has patches they make you manually apply, because > the tarballs won't even COMPILE together as is.) Hmm. I suppose, then, it's a matter of degree: just how much of this porting work can people do for a distro? I understand your point, and it's defensible enough from a principled point of view. However, it requires a packager to be a fairly expert developer of what they package, and to have time to do it. I guess most libraries aren't so bad that it's a huge problem. My instinct is to agree with you because stable APIs are pretty much a prerequisite for a stable operating system: you can't build anything solid on shifting sand. But all distros are, in the end, no better than their upstreams, and API stability is only one aspect of quality and reliability. But sometimes an API changes because a library has been refactored; and it may not even be possible to provide the old interface because an entire class of functions has been removed, perhaps for a very good reason. But that argues for versioned libraries, not bundling, even if a library is only used by one package. At least that way the package gets tested with the library version it was built with... but then we end up with version hell if two libraries need different incompatible versions of libXX.so, and some package uses both of them. Argh! There's no simple way to do it, and no rule that will fix it. Re: how set InitialCC in pkgdb2 for new package

Go to one of your package 2. Click on: Manage the `committers/watchers/admins` any of these 3. There is then an ``Add someone`` button you can use There is currently a bug that's preventing pseudo-user (such as java-sig) from being added to a package, but I already have the fix and it'll be reviewed/merged/released asap :) Thanks, Pierre hi thanks already done this procedure but i return this error "User "java-sig" is not in the packager group" https://github.com/fedora-infra/pkgdb2/issues/192 regards gil -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct
Re: Query: %cmake not doing out-of-tree builds?
On 10/10/2015 01:25 PM, Neal Gompa wrote: Hello all, Over the last few weeks, I've been working on a number of packages that use CMake for the build system for various distros, and I've noticed something rather peculiar. Of all the distros I've built packages for (Fedora/CentOS, openSUSE, Mageia, Debian, and Ubuntu), only Fedora/CentOS does not automatically do CMake building in a subdirectory such that the build artifacts don't mix in with the source tree. Essentially, the %cmake macro doesn't enforce builds are out-of-tree. Is there a particular reason for this? One that comes to mind is that you might want to build different flavors of the same sources, one prominent example being parallellizable programs that can be compiled either into sequential binaries or binaries that can be run in parallel. As has already been pointed out by many people on this list, it is simple to do an out-of-root build in the spec file even though it is not done by default. -- Susi Lehtola Fedora Project Contributor jussileht...@fedoraproject.org -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct
SCM processing changes for new packages and branches
Greetings, For the entire history of Fedora adding new packages, requesting new branches for existing packages and other similar requests have been done via copying and pasting a template into a bugzilla bug, where it was scraped by a script to process the requests. With recent additions to pkgdb2, we are now able to replace this error prone and manual process. I've created: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageDB_admin_requests with further information. Basically requests now can be made directly in pkgdb (optionally pulling information from bugzilla). We have modified our processing script that checks for requests in bugzilla to make a note about the new process and unset the old fedora-cvs flag. Note: The new process remains manual for new packages, so there will still be a delay between when you make the request and when it is processed for them. FMN will announce you when the request is processed and the branch is created. Please let us know at: https://github.com/fedora-infra/pkgdb2/issues or https://fedorahosted.org/pkgdb2/ if you run into any issues with the process. kevin pgpzAxpMfCOTO.pgp Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ devel-announce mailing list devel-annou...@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel-announce-- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct
