Self Introduction: Michael Cullen

2016-05-02 Thread Michael Cullen
Hi!

I've just submitted a review request here
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1332344

I'm a software developer from the UK currently living and working in
London on Linux-based set top box middleware. I've been a Linux user for
a long time, but never really offered much back. I've tried many
distros, but always seem to keep coming back to Fedora. Anyway, I've
decided it's probably time I offered something back, and packaging seems
like as good an idea as any.

Why this package? Well it seemed like a fairly easy one to start with
and I used to work on a Qt-based product so I know it well. Also it
plays into my interest in imaging and media.

My interests outside of software are travel and photography (even if I
do rather more of the latter) and I'm also sometimes found (literally)
hanging around local climbing centres.

Anyway, let me know if you have any questions about this!

Thanks,
Michael

Since you haven't been around lately maybe you haven't noticed this,
but here's some interesting numbers for F24. For Alpha there were 35
blocker bugs (approximately - I'm using the BZ tree view which may
include some bugs that got fixed while they were proposed). Of those,
by count, 3 were anaconda-ecosystem bugs.

For Beta, we have ~28 blockers. 4 of those are/were anaconda-ecosystem
bugs.

Also note that most of the anaconda-related bugs were caused not by
changes in anaconda, but by disruptive changes in other components that
anaconda had to adapt to. And that all the anaconda blockers were
resolved very promptly and early.

Re: No mass rebuild in Fedora 25

2016-05-02 Thread Jóhann B . Guðmundsson

On 05/02/2016 01:24 PM, Stephen Gallagher wrote:

There is strong engineering value in having two releases per year: release
early, release often. There are many projects that develop through Fedora that
get thrown into disarray when our cycle gets too far out of whack (prominent
examples being GNOME and glibc)

The distribution is made out of 14k+ components most of which of those
components completely out of sync with the Gnome and Glibc one which
means components that make up different products are not synced with
those two components cycle, which means that you cannot have one
product's release cycle be synced with another or bound to it's release
cycle.

Even historically QA did not manage to deal with this release cycle when
distribution was smaller and when it was just one "generic" release but
despite all the evidence of this not working through the years you still
push this one forward which means in other words Red Hat wants the
distribution cycle to be forcefully synced with Gnome and does what it
takes to do so which is why it's back on Gnome's release cycle despite
everything indicating it should not be on that cycle at the cost of the
community and quality of the distribution.

If there is genuine interest of start releasing fedora on time you will
not achieve that goal by not doing or blocking mass rebuilds, you either
need to stabilize anaconda development earlier in the cycle or find
another installer for the distribution that can exist outside the
distribution release cycles and does not have to be rewritten like
people are getting paid for it every cycle.

Also, if you read the bug description, you'll see that the linker failure
was caught by koschei when it tried to rebuild mkvtoolnix after updated
gcc hit the repositories:
https://apps.fedoraproject.org/koschei/package/mkvtoolnix (scroll down
to the first build attempt after 9.1.0-1.fc25). So yes, it looks to me
that either the newer gcc broke boost or there's a bug in boost exposed by
the gcc update.

I hadn't read Florian's email yet when I replied here (didn't see it in the
list).

I had another conversation with them on IRC today. They knew, but when the wrong
schedule was put up they thought FESCo had changed plans. There's also been some
kerfluffle with the strlcat() patches that got pushed out, so we're going to
have to see how that plays out.

Really? The email from Florian on this thread 30 mins prior to this
one conflicts with that from a glibc PoV and given they're part of the
toolchain team and they didn't know does the rest of the toolchain
team agree?

There is no updates-testing for rawhide, aka F25 at the moment, so anything
not a scratch build goes straight into it... Which is one of the key
reasons it's seen as quite unstable by many.

All I know is this:
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=13828182 succeeded
and https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=13872453 failed.
Rebuilding boost makes it succeed again. In the first case,
6.0.0-0.20.fc25 was in the buildroot. 6.1.1-1.fc25 was in the latter.
Boost was the same in both (1.60.0-5.fc25).

So, at least at first it's assumed there will just be one rpm in each
container? Or can we have a collection of rpms that make sense to be
together?

> Docker Layered Image "packaging" Guidelines [1]

Whats the difference here between version and release? Does version
change any based on the version of the primary rpm in the container?

And any guidelines on naming? Just use common sense? They will have to
be unique.

I guess the build system has network access and people can put anything
in CMD lines? How can we make reproducible builds? Or should CMD be
restricted to only some network resources.

> Package Review Process with a Docker Containers section [2]

This might be better as a Container review process seperate from the
Package review process, ie a different page?

So it's assumed here that someone is a packager to submit new container
reviews? Or would we want some kind of 'containerger' role for people
who maintainer containers?

I am not sure what to add to make this more concrete, but I think it
needs to be. ;)

I agree with the folks downthread we can make a bugzilla "Container
Review" to compliment Package Review. Unless we think we can spin up a
review application for these (like we are still hopefully planning on
doing for packages someday).

Also, we will need to make pkgdb create components for each container
as well for people to report bugs against.

[Modularity] Module build proposal

2016-05-02 Thread Petr Šabata
Hi all,

as promised on the last Modularity WG meeting [0], here's
a module build proposal we've been pondering for a while.

As always, this is nowhere near final and there are still many
open questions. The purpose of this mail is to get some early
feedback. Feel free to comment, especially if you see anything
obviously wrong or have ideas how to make the whole thing better.

Note the last module metadata proposal is a little outdated and
will have to be adapted to make this possible.

Key points:
- building a module means building the components it contains
and composing a module deliverable (a repository, an image, other)
- the build must be reproducible
- the module's buildroot is defined by "buildrequiring" other,
  already existing modules
- modules should be tracked in a VCS, such as dist-git [1]

Build proposal, step by step:
- we have a module, let's name it foo
- the module definition says it's composed of RPM packages
  bar and baz
- the module definition also says where to find the sources
for these packages, e.g. a link to a git repository, the
commit hash and a link to the lookaside cache [2]
- the build service clones bar's and baz's repositories and
checks out the specified commits [3]
- the build service prepares the buildroot using the modules
  listed as its build dependencies
- the build service builds bar and baz in the prepared buildroot;
some modules might require buildroot overrides and build their
  packages in a particular order
- for whatever reason, we might not always want all the built
packages in our module; we can filter some out at this point
- the service optionally includes (well, bundles) dependencies
present in the buildroot but not present in the module's runtime
environment in the currently built module
- the service gathers any extra metadata it needs and records
them in the module -- this could include automatically generated
lists of component licenses, builder IDs, vendor tags, timestamps,
module life cycle data and more
- the build service composes the deliverable(s)

Challenges:
- we need to ensure the module sources will be available for the
entire lifetime of the module (e.g. SPEC files, tarballs)
- plenty more, point them out

Most of this can be done with the tools we already have or
with minimal changes to them. This proposal doesn't address
parallel installations of conflicting modules but that's a
somewhat different topic and may be solved on a different level.

Again, share your comments and feel free to ask any questions.

Cheers,
P

[0]
https://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/teams/modularity-wg/modularity-wg.2016-04-28-15.01.html
[1] Working on that; our staging dist-git and pkgdb already
include support for this.
[2] Obviously some of these couldn't be set by the module author
when building official Fedora modules; our build service should
always use our dist-git and our cache. It is still useful for
development, testing and third-party module vendors.
[3] We've considered using git tags but it's more trouble than it's
worth.

There are no known ABI incompatibilities between gcc-6.1.1 (i.e. snapshot
a few hours after the GCC 6.1 release) and recent 6.0.0 snapshots
(development snapshots months to weeks before the 6.1 release that happened
last week). So, are you sure it is really in between
gcc-6.0.0-0.20.fc{24,25} and gcc-6.1.1-1.fc{24,25}, and not something you
just attribute to newer gcc because you see newer version on it?

Hi Kevin

Yes, I know the version specific gpg keys are available, not being a pain
but they won't exactly match $releasever , since

https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/RPM-GPG-KEY-EPEL-6
https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/RPM-GPG-KEY-EPEL-7

will also need to link to

https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/RPM-GPG-KEY-EPEL-7Server

and vice versa

I'm not so sure about GCC. It's been updated to 6.1 in both F25 and F24
and it's causing bugs already. For example, anything trying to link
against boost built with gcc-6.0.0 will fail to link at the moment, see
bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1331983 .

ppisar pushed to perl-Encode-EUCJPASCII (master). "Fix expanding undefined el6 macro (..more)"

Subject: Fix expanding undefined el6 macro

The spec file could not been processed on Fedora:

$ fedpkg local
error: parse error in expression
error: /home/test/fedora/perl-Encode-EUCJPASCII/perl-Encode-EUCJPASCII.spec:19:
bad %if condition
error: query of specfile
/home/test/fedora/perl-Encode-EUCJPASCII/perl-Encode-EUCJPASCII.spec failed,
can't parse

This fixes it by expanding the macro only if it is defined.

It's not sacrificing quality. Mass rebuilds require a great deal of engineering
coordination. We're requesting that such coordination happens in the F26
development cycle instead, so we don't end up having another long cycle.

There is strong engineering value in having two releases per year: release
early, release often. There are many projects that develop through Fedora that
get thrown into disarray when our cycle gets too far out of whack (prominent
examples being GNOME and glibc). So given that we needed to extend the F24
timeframe early on (and also had a couple slips), FESCo agreed to shorten F25 in
response so that we can still deliver the autumn releases of key projects
(without having to re-consider the updates policy like we did for GNOME
3.14->3.16 during the "Year Almost Without Fedora").

All of the major stakeholders that usually trigger a mass rebuild (GCC, glibc,
etc.) have been notified directly and are on board with this. This announcement
was to ensure that no one was left surprised by this in case we missed telling
anyone directly.

Well, it's not that easy to schedule Fedora release as you have to avoid
real life conflicts - especially autumn release is pretty packed.
Thanksgivings in the US, Christmas holidays etc. and hitting these dates
actually may affect quality more than anything else. You're under pressure
to release but right folks might not available... Releasing right after
Christmas is also pretty hard to achieve and then you put the same pressure
on spring release and you have to cut again... I did it and even I always
tried to be more flexible over strict time based schedules, these were real
red flags what to avoid.

This is very unfortunate because some of us were relying on the initial
Fedora 25 schedule, which did contain a mass rebuild, and which was
posted *after* the Fesco decision (so we naturally assumed it had been
superseded). The resolution of this Fesco ticket goes into the same
direction:

We can try to rebase glibc without a mass rebuild (after all, Debian
does it all the time). But I don't feel comfortable delaying
potentially risky changes upstream (because of symbol clashes, e.g.
gettid/getrandom/strlcpy) just because Fedora can't do a mass rebuild.

The link points to the minutes from the FESCo meeting, where the
decision has been made. There is no page AFAIK having more
information.
The reason for not having mass rebuild during F25 development cycle is
very tight schedule for F25 and we would like to avoid slips in F25 as
much as possible. That is the main motivation here.

It improves documentation but it also removes an XS function and makes many
other functions static. Therefore I push it only into rawhide.

No mass rebuild in Fedora 25

2016-05-02 Thread Jan Kurik
Hi Fedora developers,

As several people already started to propose their Changes for Fedora
25, I would like to emphasize a decision FESCo made in January [1],
not to do mass rebuild during the Fedora 25 development cycle [2].

All the Changes requiring mass rebuild should be postponed to Fedora 26.
Changes proposed for Fedora 25 will be reviewed to make sure no mass
rebuild is required.

Please let me know in case you have any questions and thank you for
contributing to Fedora.

The whole thread is based on this wrong assumption. Quoting from the
update policy [1]:

"If upstream does not provide security fixes for a particular release,
and if backporting the fix would be impractical, then a package may be
rebased onto a version that upstream supports. The definition of
practicality is left to the judgment of FESCO and the packager. "

And from the discussion that seems to be the case here so I'd opt for

4) Leave 5.x in and once it becomes EOL and a security issues comes up
update to 6.x mid release. It would have had been tested in rawhide
(and possible COPR) in the meantime which would minimize the impact.

While true, FESCo recently (last Friday) approved a draft update to that policy
that explains that backwards-compatibility breakages are almost never
acceptable in a stable release. Since 6.0 breaks compat, FESCo would probably
vote against the upgrade mid-release (and I would agree with that).--

IPv6 support in this package is optional and it's documented.
By requiring it you force it onto users who might not want it, for whatever
reasons. Note that behavior would also be different from upstream.

The dependency could be expressed with `Recommends', however, I'm not sure
whether this is supported in EPEL7.
