Re: Modifying container storage for Fedora 26.

2016-11-16 Thread Chris Murphy
Does it make sense to move all the products to XFS? An exception may
be possible for cloud images [1]

Server uses XFS. Cloud/Atomic have expressed a preference for it. I
found that ext4 allocates inodes at mkfs time, and there's no way to
get more later, and there's a real possibility with overlayfs that
there can be inode exhaustion. [2] Yes, you can just use non-default
mkfs options to create more inodes, but installer folks are typically
reluctant to use non-default mkfs options. XFS and Btrfs have
dynamically allocated inodes.

Is there any advantage of LVM for Cloud/Atomic? What about
Workstation? Dropping it for cloud/atomic may be an advantage, more
compact, less wasted space, less overhead, one less layer. For
Workstation it's probably a wash. Many users are confused by it, few
benefit from it. But the documentation refers to it.

Chris Murphy

[1]
Syslinux is preferred because it significantly reduces cloud image
size. The problem is this extlinux + ext4 bug. While syslinux 6.04
supports XFS, and builds are in koji, it's not finalized yet upstream.
So if this syslinux + ext4 bug gets fixed, then use use that
combination. Otherwise, GRUB + XFS.
Fedora 25 cloud images built with syslinux do not boot

This was talked about at the meeting today. The reason for the package
being put into EPEL testing was covered in this update notice:

 https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-EPEL-2016-23fa04bf1c

It has been in testing for a long time looking for data on if it will
break or fix systems. If you can please test and let the packager
know. There is no plan to have side-by-side versions of redis2 and
redis3 because redis2 is end of lifed.

Normally if you don't see it in the history of EPEL-devel then it
needs to be brought up like you did why it happened. After that
looking through bodhi or similar tools to contact the person who
submitted the build.

I probably don't understand the question. This IMO shouldn't be blocker for
Fedora 26 release, just there's the issue that packages which:

BuildArch: noarch
ExclusiveArch: x86_64 noarch

are distributed for every architecture, because 'noarch' in ExclusiveArch means
package is compatible with every architecture. The correct form should be:

BuildArch: noarch
ExclusiveArch: x86_64

That's fine now, because rhbz#1298668 is fixed. But still I need to test
this. Unless we fix all the packages having 'noarch' in ExclusiveArch,
there will be uninstallable (or not working) packages in "base" F26
repository, but how serious this would be?

I hope, except for fixing the issue for f26, the annoying email disappears
with this:

Today, Fedora Server relies on whatever is the default for
 docker-storage-setup.
We just tell Anaconda to reserve up to 15GiB by default for the /
 partition and
then it puts all remaining free space (on drives selected to be used by
Anaconda) into a single logical volume with no partitions.

It's a very easy thing for us to drop a different config file for
docker-storage-setup into place for Server. So if that's all we need to
 do, let
me know and I'll work it up.

OK, when you said "opt-in", I was assuming you meant that from the user's
perspective (as in having the user make an explicit choice). What you meant was
that Server would carry a different default from the upstream project. That's
easy enough to accomplish (we can do the same for Atomic as well).

The packaging guidelines for this are here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Per-Product_Configuration

Of course, that's only necessary if we want Server (and Atomic) to differ from
Workstation and/or non-productized Fedora. If they're all going to switch to
overlay2, then it's just a trivial matter.

I mean it will be devicemapper in upstream project. And distributions will
have to opt-in for overlay2.

And I think one reason being that rhel uses same git tree and we don't
want to switch to overlay2 by default for rhel yet.

overlay2 will be an experiment on fedora first as default and if it works
well, then change default upstream too.

Currently docker-storage-setup defaults to devicemapper and is hard
coded to setup a thinpool of 40% of remaining disk. Otherwise it sets
up loopback devices on the root file system. Devicemapper is nice
since it works with thinpools and can automatically expand the storage
if the disk space is getting used up.

Moving to Overlay, we can more easily use the root file system directly,
which would be fine for Fedora Workstation. We want to preserve the use
of the remaining storage for Overlay on AH and Fedora Server, since
this would give a user flexibility to switch back to using devicemapper
if they had problems with the Overlay driver.

Why exactly does this need to be opt-in? Why wouldn't we just change the default
on Fedora Server to use overlay2 instead of devicemapper?

I think I'm missing some key part of the problem here.

If anyone has time to work on this, I don't see a need for Atomic Host
and Server to have different partitioning defaults, so if we can just
merge them, that'd be nice.

Ok, that sounds good. We are working on providing a knob to opt-in new
behavior. I think all you have to drop in config file will be something
like.

/etc/sysconfig/docker-storage-setup

STORAGE_DRIVER=overlay2
YET_TO_BE_NAMED_OPTION=VAL

So upstream default will continue to be devicemapper. We will have to
modify fedora workstation, fedora server and atomic host infrastructure
to opt-in for overlay2.

Today, Fedora Server relies on whatever is the default for docker-storage-setup.
We just tell Anaconda to reserve up to 15GiB by default for the / partition and
then it puts all remaining free space (on drives selected to be used by
Anaconda) into a single logical volume with no partitions.

It's a very easy thing for us to drop a different config file for
docker-storage-setup into place for Server. So if that's all we need to do, let
me know and I'll work it up.

The installer tests (and generation of all images which are generated
using the installer, of course) are now broken for an excitingly

And being able to do so basically involves following.

- docker-storage-setup creates a logical volume from free space
- Creates a filesystem on that logical volume
- Mounts that logical volume on the directory which docker is going to
  use.

  mount /dev/docker-vg/foo /var/lib/docker/

- Now when docker users overlay2 graph driver, all the images, containers
and associated metadata will be stored outside the root filesystem and
  onto /dev/docker-vg/foo logical volume.

> We can not as easily
> support the expanding disk for Overlay since we will not use using thinpool.

> We have looked at options to hard code OverlayFS with the defaults,

If we always mount /var/lib/docker on on /dev/vg/foo for overlay2 driver
this will be a regression w.r.t current behavior. So I would not
recommend changing current behavior. I think this should be an opt-in.
We are working on provide a config knob to elect this behavior and
atomic host and fedora server will have to opt-in somehow.

I think it will be easy for atomic host as they already drop something
in /etc/sysconfig/docker-storage-setup. Not sure how fedora server
variant will do it.

Thanks

Modifying container storage for Fedora 26.

2016-11-16 Thread Daniel J Walsh
We would like to change the docker container storage to default to
Overlayfs2 in Fedora 26. But we have a problem on Atomic Host and
Fedora Server distributions.

We can not as easily
support the expanding disk for Overlay since we will not use using thinpool.

We have looked at options to hard code OverlayFS with the defaults, or
we could just drop a /etc/sysconfig/docker-storage-setup that specified
Overlay and the percentage of remaining space to use for the
/var/lib/docker device. But what is the best way to set different
defaults for AH, Fedora Server and Fedora Workstation.

We would like to discuss with you guys about what you would think is
the best way to handle.

[Bug 1394697] amavisd-new-zeromq-0: 2.11.0-4.fc26 requires perl-ZMQ-LibZMQ3 that will be retired

2016-11-16 Thread bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1394697

Juan Orti changed:

   What|Removed |Added

  Flags|needinfo?(j.orti.alcaine@gm |
   |ail.com)|

I've asked upstream [1] if there is any plan to do the migration.

The zeromq components are an optional part of amavisd-new, so if you decide to
retire the libraries, I will just drop the subpackages.

Re: RFC: Change the default hostname for Fedora 26+

2016-11-16 Thread Przemek Klosowski

As an alternative, I wrote a program that takes the distribution of
trigrams from an English dictionary, and statistically generates a
Markov chain of such overlapping trigrams that look almost entirely
unlike English words but often are strangely pronounceable, for instance:

umirckbysag mpspiarefor doptinenchc lymdeotmicn gclyowdhoki

I, er, don't find any of those naturally pronounceable at all.

Well, I see your point, but we're competing here with qljkvwqrx,
lkdsfhkrw, or ad5cb9c940. Remember that the point is to come up with
something that could be easily remembered. I would argue that they're
not much worse than

Acthrel Iprivask Strensiq Eltrombopag Ondansetron VinCRIStine Arixtra
Arzerra Ertaczo

which are actually from a list of registered drug names that the doctors
are supposed to remember. Maybe someone could come up with a suggestion
for a better algo---adding just few vowels would fix them up
significantly:

umirckobysag mopsopiarefor doptinenchoc lymdeotemicyn goclywodhoki

BTW, when I looked at the list of drug names I was impressed with the
linguistic inventiveness of whoever comes up with this stuff; most of
them not only could plausibly be pronounced, but also sounded vaguely
'medical'.

Is this porting possible in the near future? I really like to retire zeromq3
soon as it is quite outdated and does not receive Bugfixes.

I think you may be mixing up two notification systems. *mediawiki
itself* can notify you of changes to mediawiki instances with quite a
lot of granularity. You can 'watch' any wiki page by clicking the
'watch' tab that shows next to 'edit', 'history' and 'move'. You can
edit your watch list by clicking 'watchlist' that appears at the top,
between 'preferences' and 'contributions'.

If you click 'preferences' and go to the 'User profile' tab, you can
check the box 'Email me when a page or file on my watchlist is
changed', and it'll do what it says.

FMN is a more generic notification system backed by fedmsg, which does
not have quite the same level of granularity available.

Odd. This definitely worked ok in the past.

Does this work for *anyone* right now?

It's still unclear if it's an infrastructure issue.

You will want to add a "All messages matching a regular expression"
rule and add regexes for any pages you want to watch there.

I know thats kinda clunky, but not sure how else to do it. ;(

My problem here is that we recently picked the Fedora wiki for a
collaborative effort, and if we cannot get change notifications, that
makes the wiki unnecessarily difficult to use for this purpose.

F26 System Wide Change: Debugging Information For Static Libraries

2016-11-16 Thread Jan Kurik
= Proposed System Wide Change: Debugging Information For Static Libraries =
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/StaticLibraryDebuginfo

Change owner(s):
* Florian Weimer

This change proposes to ship debugging information in static libraries.

== Detailed Description ==
At present, rpm strips static libraries and discards the debugging
information in them (that is, the debugging information is not copied
into the -debuginfo packages). After that, there is no way to recover
the debugging information, say if it is needed to analyze an issue in
a statically linked application.

This change proposes to stop stripping static libraries. To improve
debugging experience, it is desirable that the static libraries are
still rewritten at RPM build time, to point the file references to the
final location under /usr/src/debug.

The technical side of this change is tracked in bug 1395280.

== Scope ==
* Proposal owners: rpm needs to be changed to stop stripping static
libraries. If possible, static libraries should still be rewritten so
that the debugging information points to the source files under
/usr/src/debug, for optimum developer experience.

* Other developers: Some packages copy static libraries into places
where rpm cannot find them, so that they are not stripped. These
changes are not strictly necessary, but can reduce RPM/installation
size for developer packages.

* Release engineering: This change requires a mass rebuild to become
fully effective.

* List of deliverables: No release blocking deliverables.

* Policies and guidelines: no changes proposed (change will be
implemented through rpm)

* Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change)

I wouldn't want to make such big change of upstream default setting.
Upstream will hate us for "matplotlib works differently on Fedora"-type
bugs. This is definitely something to be decided upstream.

--- Comment #2 from Dominik 'Rathann' Mierzejewski ---
IPv6 support by default is required by the packaging guidelines:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Networking_Support

There is nothing in EPEL-specific guidelines to the contrary, so the above
applies for EPEL as well. Please add the missing Requires.

File in /etc/sudoers.d is neat, thanks. But I am hoping we can came up with a
new default setting or is there a reason not to include anything else?

I was thinking about it some more, and I think this setting does more harm then
good. It limits what users can do but it doesn't stop them to bypass it with a
simple alias sudo="sudo PATH=$PATH". So in my opinion the original "If you
don't trust the people running sudo to have a sane PATH environment variable
you may want to use this." kind of defeats its purpose.

In the misc section here
(https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Fedora_25_RC_1.3_Installation#Default_boot_and_install_.28x86_64.29)
it says you can't boot macos anymore. Is that supposed to be fixed in
this latest release?

Is there a bugzilla entry for that problem as well?
