Not recently. I looked at it way back in the EPEL 7 Python 3 stack
days... I don't think it'd be too difficult to actually do, based on
what Miro did for the python3-rpm package for EPEL.

yeah. Shortly before final freeze I updated the virthosts those builders
are on. Sadly, somehow the newer kernels cause those weird network
hiccups. Builders stop checking in, or don't return when uploading as
well.

I moved one of them back to the previous kernel to confirm it was ok and
it has been. I am downgrading all the rest now, so they should all be
back to hopefully being stable later this afternoon.

[EPEL-devel] python311-dnf for el8 and el9

Hi folks,

I have some Python apps that "import dnf". I wanted to run these on
the parallel Python versions in RHEL 8 and 9, but there's no
python311-dnf library available.

I haven't looked into this yet. Has anyone else looked at it?

I think I'll need something like
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/python3-rpm/c/966f38637a7f51376e57b7aeb19a872986a39b8a
, but for a "python3-dnf" package?

(By the way, thanks Python team for python3.11 in RHEL 8 and 9. That
is helpful for moving workloads across RHEL versions and helping the
Python ecosystem move forward. And thank you Miro for python311-rpm!)

I see these regularly in koschei failures as well.
x86_64 and aarch64 builds succeed, but ppc64le fails with network issues.

That doesn't seem to really fit, though. You need to be able to at
least set environment variables and execute processes to exploit that,
right? That hardly covers "all publically reachable servers".

I guess it's the closest candidate, but meh. In any case, the updates
for that all went stable yesterday.

Hi,

Could you please build perl-HTTP-BrowserDetect for EPEL 8 ?
I was able to build version 3.23 (commit
b0cef569ba956a093760c1c99555e63c1d962d8e).
I don't think any later version will build due to the dependency on
perl-JSON-PP >= 4.04 (commit ad7080adff06c5d011ea1e3665200c1ea04fddc4).
I can take care of this by myself if you add me to the package. My FAS is
xavierb.

[Test-Announce] Fedora 39 Upgrade Test Day is underway!

Hey All,

As we come closer to Fedora 39 release dates, it's time to test upgrades.
Fedora 39 has a lot of changesets and it becomes essential that we
test the graphical upgrade methods as well as the command line.
As a part of this test day[0], we will test upgrading from a full
updated, F37 and F38 to the F39 for all architectures(x86_64,ARM,aarch
64) and variants(WS,cloud,server,silverblue,IoT).

We understand that upgrade takes time and testing if things work as
expected, takes more.
We will be accepting results throughout the weekend!

The results can be submitted here[1]

As usual, we hang out on the #fedora-test-day, should you have questions.

I looked at the first linked build log in the ticket and it looks like 
the build failed in the debuginfo extraction step. In that log, 
find-debuginfo is called with -j3, and it could be that it ran out of 
memory because it was trying to do 3 debuginfo extractions in parallel. 
You could try to stick something like this in the spec file to tune it down:


# Require 32 GB of RAM per CPU core for debuginfo processing
%global _find_debuginfo_opts %limit_build -m 32768

... and see if it helps. With this, it should pass -j1 to find-debuginfo 
when the builder has 32 GB RAM, -j2 when it has 64 GB etc.


If that doesn't work, then there's also the option of using -g1 to 
reduce the binary sizes so they take less memory to process (but that 
makes backtraces much worse so I'd only leave it for emergencies if you 
can't get an important build out otherwise).



Does a hammer smaller than -g1 also exist for issues like:

according the available resources. However memory is not there:

actually two memory tunables, %_smp_tasksize_proc and %_smp_tasksize_thread.


Looks like the new thing would replace the constrain_build macro that 
firefox.spec is using:


Instead of current:

# Require 4 GB of RAM per CPU core
%constrain_build -m 4096

It would use:

# Require 4 GB of RAM per CPU core
%global _smp_tasksize_proc 4096

It doesn't look like a huge win from the packager's point of view, but I 
am sure it's better to use the rpm upstream limits instead of external 
macros such as 
constrain_build. 


Yep, memory is certainly considered, it was really the main driver of 
that change.


Compared to %constrain_build the big win is that memory is always 
considered, regardless of whether the packager asked for it or not. It 
would be a useful experiment to drop that tunable from the spec because 
it probably isn't necessary anymore (with rpm >= 4.18 that is).


The other win is that the native version also covers threads, which 
helps on 32bit systems in particular.

Just a quick observation that tuned is python mostly with 10 times the
installed footprint of power-profiles-daemon.

If power management is as fundamental as it seems recently I would
really like to see minimal-footprint-closer-to-core thingie.. , i.e.
something systemd-*... maybe.

OCaml 5.1 rebuild

Over the next few days I'm going to rebuild all OCaml packages in
Rawhide for OCaml 5.1, plus some non-OCaml packages that have OCaml
bindings.

OCaml 5.1 is basically a small point release, but it does add back
native code support for riscv64 and s390x.  The only remaining
architecture that hasn't been updated for OCaml 5 (and is therefore
still using the bytecode interpreter) is ppc64le.

The side tag will be:
  Side tag 'f40-build-side-75060' (id 75060) created.
  Use 'fedpkg build --target=f40-build-side-75060' to use it.
  Use 'koji wait-repo f40-build-side-75060' to wait for the build repo to be 
generated.

The downstream patched branch is:
  https://pagure.io/fedora-ocaml/commits/fedora-40-5.1.0

The tools used to do the rebuild are:

According to scratch Perl boostrap history

it started when perl-Module-ScanDeps was upgraded from 1.33-1.fc40 to
1.34-2.fc40 and these two packages emereged in a build root:

perl-blib-1.07
perl-IPC-Run3-0.048

I cannot reproduce simply by defining perl_bootstrap, so it's probably needs
additional Perl packages built in bootstrap mode.

Please note that perl-Module-ScanDeps blocks perl-Module-Install which blocks a
lot of other packages.

Hi,

I continued digging some more, and it turns out there is a one liner
fix for the issue that has been merged upstream:

https://github.com/dracutdevs/dracut/pull/2196

Would there be any hope to get this backported to be included in Fedora
39? The scope of the change is ridiculously tiny, limited to this
single modules.d/90dmsquash-live/iso-scan.sh file which is exclusively
used for this broken feature.

It would be really great to get the final Fedora 39 iso working again.

Request for comment- tuned replacing power-profiles-daemon plan

Hi Folks,

We would like to replace power-profiles-daemon with tuned. There are
many power-related software that offer similar functions. Advanced
users may install several power management tools, for example, tuned
and power-profiles-daemon (ppd), and get confused about which tools
manage the system and cause unexpected behaviors for the system. By
integrating power-profiles-daemon with tuned, the user can get extra
features to finetune the system, and the basic feature provided by ppd
can be used according to the user's demand. It also can reduce the
efforts of the maintainer.

The impact of this plan would be gnome-control-center (power panel),
KDE, sysprof, and tuned (or some projects depending on ppd). We should
move the ppd API and features to tuned to provide the same features of
it. From the API aspect, we also can design a new API for the basic
feature, ppd provided but the software dependent on ppd should be
modified to use the new API. Although, for the long-term plan, a set
of new API is a good option. For the short-term plan, moving the
original one to tuned is good for those applications depending on ppd.

is called with -j3, and it could be that it ran out of memory because it
was trying to do 3 debuginfo extractions in parallel. You could try to
stick something like this in the spec file to tune it down:

# Require 32 GB of RAM per CPU core for debuginfo processing
%global _find_debuginfo_opts %limit_build -m 32768


Thanks for the idea, Kalev. I went ahead and applied this, and builds
for F38 and F39 succeeded. Let's hope it really helps and this wasn't
just luck!
