Batch upgrade of PETSc Sundials MUMPS libraries

2024-05-17 Thread Antonio T. sagitter

Hi all.

I'm preparing (1) following updates for Fedora 41:

PETSc-3.21.1 (https://petsc.org/release/changes/321/)
MUMPS-5.7.1 (https://mumps-solver.org/index.php?page=dwnld#cl)
Sundials-7.0.0 (https://github.com/LLNL/sundials/releases/tag/v7.0.0)

All dependent packages can be rebuilt with these new releases except
bout++-5.1.0 that it's incompatible with Sundials-7; bout++ upstream
already modified their code to work with Sundials-7 but it's unreleased

yet (https://github.com/boutproject/BOUT-dev/tree/next).

One thing that is quite difficult to do with %autopatch/%autosetup is
conditionally applied patches, since I've always understood it to be bad
practice to conditionalize the Patch: lines

The evolution-data-server spec file currently has:

# 0-99: General patches

# 100-199: Flatpak-specific patches
# https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution-data-server/-/merge_requests/144
Patch100: Make-DBUS_SERVICES_PREFIX-runtime-configurable.patch

[...]

%prep
%autosetup -p1 -S gendiff -N

# General patches
%autopatch -p1 -m 0 -M 99

# Flatpak-specific patches
%if 0%{?flatpak}
%autopatch -p1 -m 100 -M 199
%endif

which will warn if you add a warning about empty %autopatch. Not sure if
there's a better way of handling that.

Hi all,

Today, 2024-05-16, we have removed inactive packagers
from the packager group.

This is in accordance with the FESCo policy on inactive packagers:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fesco/Policy_for_inactive_packagers/

I suspect I am not alone in asking “What is the list of inactive
packagers that this impacted?”

The list of affected packages is helpful; the list of inactive
packagers would have been extra helpful. I suppose it was earlier in
the thread?

If the removed user is 'main admin' for a package, this package
will be orphaned. If there are co-maintainers for the package,
one of them should take the role of 'main admin',
by clicking "✋ Take" on
`https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/`".

Otherwise any packager may take the package while it's orphaned.
After 6 weeks, the package will be retired.
After another 8 weeks, a new review is needed to unretire it.
see

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fesco/Policy_for_orphan_and_retired_packages/
for more details.

Note that removed packagers will currently still appear in packager
groups on src.fedoraproject.org . We
are working on a way to refresh that
information.

Yes, and every package should absolutely use them unless it really
needs to refer to individual patches for some reason (e.g. applying
them at specific times or not applying them on certain arches).

Yes. We considered trying to migrate .planet files but:

* There's a ton of invalid ones that don't resolve or are 404, or have 0
entries in them, or go to things that aren't rss feeds.
* There's a ton of them that were setup by people years ago that are no
longer active in the fedora community, so there's no fedora tagged
posts, but who knows if they intend to add some, or never will.
* There's a ton of them that are http and a simple http/https
substitution doesn't work, so we don't know where the https version is
or if it exists.

Perhaps we could look at posters for the last say 6months and mail them
directly to check and update? That would at least get somewhat active
folks...

Hum, good question. I'll ask Pedro about this.

Yes, and we should have noted this in the announcement, but we were
going to sunset the 'sub-planets'. They didn't seem to be very
active/used. Is that not the case?

But of those 809, a very large majority are invalid, inactive or broken
in some way.

Intention to retire mlocate

2024-05-17 Thread Michal Sekletar
Hi everyone,

We have had a plocate as a drop-in replacement for mlocate for quite a
while now. My intention is to retire the mlocate package next week in order
to prevent duplication and so that we can focus only on plocate
going forward.

Have a nice weekend,
Michal

Major version update of reuse tool (3.0.2) incoming

2024-05-17 Thread Jan Staněk
Hello all!
As of today, I have picked up maintenance of FSFE's reuse tool [1].
I have a major update in progress, which IIRC includes changes on how
the CLI should be used.

I do not know if any Fedora tooling uses this tool,
but in case it does, consider this your heads-up.

The update should land in rawhide sometime next week,
and later also in F40 and F39.
Let me know if that works for you or if I should change my plans.

Have a nice weekend!

Unnumbered patch and source lines are automatically numbered nowadays.

Which means that basically all blogs are going to vanish from Fedora Planet
unless people re-add them manually.

There are 809 blogs on the old Planet Fedora, the new one currently has 30
(should be at least 31 soon when it picks up my RSS URL that I have just
added to accounts.fedoraproject.org). That is less than 4%. More than 96% of
the blogs will be gone.

This is not helpful.

Node.js 22.x coming to Rawhide/F41

2024-05-17 Thread Stephen Gallagher
As of today, I have built Node.js 22.2.0 for Fedora Rawhide. It is
currently available as a non-default package (Node.js 20 remains the
default during this short transition period).

If you maintain a package that depends on Node.js (either runtime or
build-time), please take some time in the next week or so to verify
whether it continues to work properly with Node.js 22. I plan to
switch the default in Rawhide over to 22.x as per the
recently-approved Change[1] on or shortly after May 27th.

If you encounter a significant problem with Node.js 22, please contact
the nod...@fedoraproject.org mailing list and we will try to help you.

Oh, this is embarrasing. I added two patches but they didn't get
applied because %setup not %autosetup. :(

"Use the selected profile without asking at startup" is the check box
presented by "firefox -ProfileManager". If that is not a default profile
then I don't know what is.

It looks like it copies Firefox's *.sqlite databases to
~/.cache/bookmarksrunner on every user login and then uses them:

$ ls ~/.cache/bookmarksrunner/ | grep firefox
bookmarkrunnerfirefoxdbfile.sqlite
bookmarkrunnerfirefoxfavdbfile.sqlite
KRunner-Favicons-firefox-default

I see. I don't think it's useful for gnome search as it uses live data
(also from recently visited URL) and also sorts results for popularity.
It should give you the same results as writing directly to Firefox URL bar.

This feature looks more and more confusing.

How do the search providers (be it Gnome's or Plasma's variant) decide
which Firefox Profile to scrape?

The searches are received from the first launched Firefox instance and
its profile. Due to Firefox remote service usually all your FF windows
use the same profile and there's usually only one profile per user.

So usually you'll get search results from the recent Firefox you're running.

I guess I'm unusual then ...

If you do use "-no-remote -P $Profile" to have instances with separate
profiles, you have to start the "search provider profile" first. Or
maybe Gonome search starts the default profile first anyways. There is
no apparent way to control this.

I mean, I would understand if the search uses the default profile, but
just any running instance? Strong dislike over here.

In any case, I think we should *not* sneak this in unannouced, but with
a clear information about wht it does and how turn it off.

You can enable/disable gnome search by
browser.gnome-search-provider.enabled at about:config for your profile.

There isn't any 'default' profile, Firefox usually use only one.

Also Firefox Gnome search provider has been here for long time, see
https://mastransky.wordpress.com/2020/09/25/firefox-gnome-shell-search-provider/

On this new URL, the sub-planets are currently broken. Also, how can I add

This is not a problem because *.sqlite databases can be opened in
read-only mode. This won't conflict with the running instance of Firefox.

I expect Firefox fails to quit for some reason but as it's connected to DBus

you'll get the same results (ff hang) without the service.

First I'll try to reproduce it on different machines (including virtual

I guess I'm unusual then ...

If you do use "-no-remote -P $Profile" to have instances with separate
profiles, you have to start the "search provider profile" first. Or
maybe Gonome search starts the default profile first anyways. There is
no apparent way to control this.

I mean, I would understand if the search uses the default profile, but
just any running instance? Strong dislike over here.

In any case, I think we should *not* sneak this in unannouced, but with
a clear information about wht it does and how turn it off.

Cheers
Michael

The searches are received from the first launched Firefox instance and
its profile. Due to Firefox remote service usually all your FF windows
use the same profile and there's usually only one profile per user.

So usually you'll get search results from the recent Firefox you're running.

This feature looks more and more confusing.

How do the search providers (be it Gnome's or Plasma's variant) decide
which Firefox Profile to scrape?

I know that profiles are no security feature, but they serve a purpose
as separating different use cases/"realms" which a user operates in.

So, which databases does the Plasma version copy?

If I have several FF instances running (-no-remote), which one does
Gnome search talk to?

Do they do similar stuff with Chrome or other browsers?

And there is this proposal to reduce the amount of compression

https://github.com/rpm-software-management/rpm/issues/1396

Actually, since RPM now uses `rpmuncompress` to extract the archives,
it could also make sense to e.g. extract this utility into separate
sub-package and move the extraction utilities out from the
@buildsys-build. That would not reduce the the buildroot size at
first, but get the dependencies to the right place for the start.

Doesn't work.

rpmuncompress doesn't know how to uncompress ANYTHING AT ALL by
itself. It only knows which command(s) to call to do that.

The point is that the group is not the right place to list the
extraction utilities. The definition should be closer to RPM IMHO. Of
course one might argue that distribution might want to have a word and
avoid some compression algorithm, but it can't add anything what RPM
somehow does not support.

And I didn't want to imply that rpmuncompress can extract some archive
on its own. Although it can likely be read that way ...

Not sure how this is supposed to work: add-determinism-nopython seems
to install %{_bindir}/add-determinism.nopython but the macro only seems
to look for %{_bindir}/add-determinism, resulting in this when only
add-determinism-nopython is installed:

+ /usr/bin/add-determinism --brp -j48
/builddir/build/BUILDROOT/perl-Finance-Quote-1.6200-1.fc41.noarch
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.hdLEuR: line 89: /usr/bin/add-determinism: No such file or
directory
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.hdLEuR (%install)

The intent seems to be that the minimal version checks for existence of
the full version and re-execs it if found. So it seems to me that the
minimal version should be installed as %{_bindir}/add-determinism and
the full version should be called %{_bindir}/add-determinism.withpython
or something. Or maybe just tweak the rpm macro to define
%__brp_add_determinism as %{_bindir}/add-determinism.nopython.

Regards, Paul.

Hm, does really KDE Plasma access Firefox profile and searches it for
anything? That's interesting. Can you point me to any info about it?

So if we have Firefox without Gnome search service / DBus service we'd

User can't even easily terminate this process without disabling the

I see it takes 24064 bytes only as it's just a simple and small DBus
service. Does it really take 1GB on your box?

So it's a bit complicated situation here. I think it's clumsy to have
firefox-gnome and firefox-non-gnome rpm with different desktop files
but I don't see any other option (beside to remove gnome search or
implement it as different app and broker the search results).

1. Provide a standard shortcut without DBusActivatable and with
NotShowIn=gnome for all other DEs in the firefox package.
2. Create a separate package with gnome-search related files (including
a .service file and a special shortcut with OnlyShowIn=gnome).

3. Install this package only if the gnome-shell is installed.

Will look at the NotShowIn keyword, Thanks.

This would not have happened with autosetup. If you overwrite
automatisms (using invidual patch numbers and flags) you need to know
what you are doing. So this is a very weak argument:

We also have unnumbered patch source definition lines, don't we?

IIUC, you're indicating that the existing planet feed addresses will not
be automatically migrated, and thus everyone has to update their profile,
even if already on the Fedora Planet today ?

Thank you, I confirmed it is fixed now!!

findmnt is /usr/bin/findmnt
util-linux-core-2.40.1-1.fc40.x86_64

process only created when something tries to talk to it on the DBus
socket, or is it always there listening?

Yes, it should be moved to a separate package and installed only if the
gnome-shell is installed.

Let's me explain it a bit:

Gnome search service is provided by running Firefox application itself.
It's because it searches and publishes results from recent live user
profile.

Gnome search provider needs to be 'activable' DBus service so you need
to set DBusActivatable=true at .desktop file and the application needs
to provide org.freedesktop.Application.

Activable service also means (from my testing) that the application
itself it not run by 'Exec' specified at .desktop file but by DBus
service. If DBus service is missing it's run first and then
org.freedesktop.Application is queried.

So if we have Firefox without Gnome search service / DBus service we'd
need different .desktop file with 'DBusActivatable=false' for it (as
AFAIK rpm doesn't allow to overwrite file owned by different package).

If there's DBusActivatable=true at .desktop file but the DBus service is
missing the applications fails to launch.

So it's a bit complicated situation here. I think it's clumsy to have
firefox-gnome and firefox-non-gnome rpm with different desktop files but
I don't see any other option (beside to remove gnome search or implement
it as different app and broker the search results).
