It’s a rare use case, but it’s possible that some applications could crash if they are using that pointer at the wrong time, without checking. And there are also some platforms where a dummy screen will normally exist even if no actual monitors are connected. It’s just that it doesn’t seem to be necessary to have one on xcb, so we are trying to avoid needing to create one artificially. It seems right to have the code modeling the real world: if there is nothing on which you can view the graphical output of your application, then there should not be a QScreen instance. Does anyone have any objection? I would favor an invalid QScreen instance to be returned instead. At least from the public QGuiApplication API. A function that maybe returns null on some platforms puts an onus on a diligent developer using this function. Thus work is created for everyone to cover a scenario that will happen for a very few in very seldom cases. Our own software was not prepared for a similar case until last week: we relied on the xcb plugin returning an X11 Display pointer when querying it for display. What happens during that period of time is just as fishy as when tearing down a C++ application: The order of destruction for global objects between several compilation units is undefined. In C++ you cannot rely on it (I think you can rely on the order within a unit), so you prepare yourself with levels of indirection and/or weak references. I was thinking the same for a long time. Until I discovered (the hard way) a that at least one aspect of the C++ behavior is standardized: the order of destruction is guaranteed to be the reverse of the construction (see [basic.start.term]). I ran into this because of a singleton being encapsuled within a function using a 'static' object. The crashes upon application exit seemed arbitrary at first but turned out to be well-defined :) Which deletion order is the best for QML... maybe it can't be changed anymore. At least with MinGW this made the symbol go away. While e.g. MSVC still exports it. Now I don't know the exact strategy pursured by QT_DEPRECATED but I assume that the function's symbol should not disappear from the 5.2 ABI? [Development] 6 conflicting symbols between QtQuick 1 and 2
Hi! Don't ask why but we ran into the known[1] segfault caused by symbol name conflicts between Qt5Qml and Qt5Declarative. Checking the symbol tables it appears to because by 6 symbols only: qmlContext(QObject const*) qmlExecuteDeferred(QObject*) qmlAttachedPropertiesObject(int*, QObject const*, QMetaObject const*, bool) qmlAttachedPropertiesObjectById(int, QObject const*, bool) qmlInfo(QObject const*) qmlEngine(QObject const*) At least for non-VS compilers the partially different return types (QQml* vs. QDeclarative*) don't help with having a different symbol name mangling. At the same time the functions cannot be used interchangeably either. So I assume that this conflict was a simply copypaste oversight during the porting. I have not checked the respective use cases of the functions but I guess that they are internal to Qt despite being exported? Anyone sees a problem with renaming the functions of v1 or v2 to make their names unique? If not, we'll prepare a patch and present it.
