Re: background of DIA diagram

2014-11-16 Thread Michael Ross
By definition a transparent background makes no sense - you would never
know it is transparent because it is behind everything else - so I probably
don't under stand what you are after.

There is nothing in the current version of Dia that has transparency - I
think it is coming and me be part of the unreleased stuff.

On occasions when I wanted something to be transparent in front of another
- I have used Inkscape to create it and sometimes GIMP, than made an image
of it and placed into DIA as a image. You can expand and contract that
image and layer it to be behind whatever else you are diagramming.

svg color models has an alpha channel. This is not tranparency: this is
opacity, default to 1. I know Dia for an xml
superset/subset of svg. Obviously, it should be simpler to act on custom
shapes than programmatic ones, in such case use an embedding group
will help after export.

A workaround after exort to svg:

So, simply embed your background elements with a g by hand, then set
opacity and fill-opacity properties on that group (from 0. to 1).

Same for foregrounds elements.

As Michael and Thomas already said transparency kind of depends on the
context. If you want to look through your diagram window to your desktop
that's even not possible with the current development version, which
otherwise has much improved transparency support.

But if you want to export your diagram with a transparent background that's
already possible with Dia 0.97.x, if you choose the right format. There is
for example Cairo PNG (with alpha). Also the vector format filters (SVG,
WMF, WPG, etc. pp.) usually don't draw the background.

If you want something else, please be more specific.
See also https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=591525#c16 about the
reason to exclude transparency from the diagram background color.

Re: background of DIA diagram

2014-11-16 Thread Vedran Vucic
Hello,

Exporting to Cairo png with alpha produced shapes with transparent
bakcground while export to svg produced image with white background
and shapes on it.
However, I am satisfied with Cairo png with alpha format.
I need it in teh following scenarion.:
1. I create diagram that should be put in the doucment with specific
bakground. Thus, diagram should be transparent so the shapes (black
lines) do have good contrast on existing document. That is all I
need.

However, Cairo png with alpha is good solution for now.

Thanks,

VV
