[DDN] Can Computers Help Schools? The wrong perspective Yes ( a focus) Digital Libraries 1
Here is one perspective that was missed in the article by Jay Mathews Digital Libraries Most of us grew up with a community library as a resource. In my neighborhood there were slim pickings.. and in the school a limited selection. We now have access through the use of computers to digital libraries and resources beyond the information given to us by teachers. As a teacher the school library often did not have enough resources for the students and they would have to settle for another topic or.. another project to study. I could go on but you get the drift of this. A digital library is a library in which a significant proportion of the resources are available in machine-readable format (as opposed to print or microform), accessible by means of computers. The digital content may be locally held or accessed remotely via computer networks. In libraries, the process of digitization began with the catalog, moved to periodical indexes and abstracting services, then to periodicals and large reference works, and finally to book publishing. Some of the largest and most successful digital libraries are Project Gutenberg, ibiblio and the Internet Archive. Source Wikipedia The digital library is a resource that changes teaching and learning in any country. Libraries are a fundamental part of the cultural landscape of any country. They preserve the achievements of the past and provide access to the common heritage of humanity. They are fundamental components of the education and training system, and increasingly an important instrument for spreading the values of rationality, tolerance and the scientific outlook. Many libraries have important public outreach functions. However, they are also an essential part of the scientific research and development efforts that drive contempoerary economic growth. There is a great article on Vint Cerf and why libraries , technology can help, schools, and homes. Vint Cerf helps Google digitize books From the Web May 18, 2006 16:18 The Washington Post today has an interview with Internet pioneer Vinton Cerf, who now holds the title of Chief Internet Evangelist at Google. In it, he talks about his efforts to digitize and make freely available the content of tens of thousands of the world's great volumes. Think for a moment about the dead-tree problem, he said. When you stand in your own personal library looking for something and you realize that A, you can't remember which book it was in, and B, there's no way you can go through manually looking at all the pages, then you think, 'God, I wish all this stuff was online.' That's the stated goal of Google's library project, to create a massive electronic card catalog that will help people find information in published books, much as Google already does with Web pages. (The Washington Post) There are a lot of digital library sites. I would pick LOC.gov as the beginning one. bbracey at aol com ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

Microsoft: Open source 'not reliable or dependable' View the complete story at: http://news.com.com/Microsoft+Open+source+not+reliable+or+dependable/2100-73 44_3-6074237.html?tag=nefd.pulse A senior Microsoft executive told a BBC documentary that people should use commercial software if they're looking for stability. I don't think (open source) is anti-Microsoft in the sense that it's giving people choices in the technologies that they use, Jonathan Murray, the vice president and chief technology officer of Microsoft Europe, told BBC World in the first part of the documentary The Code Breakers, which aired this week. Some people want to use community-based software, and they get value out of sharing with other people in the community. Other people want the reliability and the dependability that comes from a commercial software model. And again, at the end of the day, you make the choice based on what has the highest value to you, Murray continued. It isn't clear from Murray's statement which category he believes commercial open-source companies such as Red Hat and MySQL fit into. [DDN] New YouthLearn Web Content on Youth Media
Dear DDN members, If you are at all interested these days in how technology can support learning both in school and afterschool, you¹re probably also thinking about media projects and media making. Today¹s young people are consuming and making media in multiple forms and with a range of new multimedia tools, and educators are looking for new ways to support this creative expression. The youth media movement, which for some 35 years has illustrated how best to guide media education and promote youth voice, has much to teach the broader education community, and here at YouthLearn, we¹re making a concerted effort to bring about this sharing of lessons learned. That said, I¹m thrilled to announce a new section of our website, ³Youth Media: Exploring Media Making Positive Youth Development.² You can reach it via a link on our homepage or at http://www.youthlearn.org/youthmedia. Here you¹ll find new information about our approach to media making and a wealth of resources available online to support you in launching similar efforts. Of particular interest is our work over the last few years to improve the evaluation of youth media programs and their intended outcomes. YouthLearn has been working with Time Warner, Inc. and their community-based youth media grantees to examine and strengthen evaluation practices and better articulate the unique impact these kinds of programs have on young people. We feature a variety of stories and findings from leaders in the youth media field and lessons learned that can inform other youth media and technology programs. From basic information about evaluation to samples of youth-produced media, this section will provide you field-based examples of how to assess the effectiveness of your programs and foster new media making skills. YouthLearn¹s effort to support educators in technology integration and youth media making practices is on-going. Please feel free to share with us your feedback, suggestions, and questions. Your input will inform our services and our future efforts to support your programs and schools. The current version of the site launched in December 2004. At that point we actually had over 3,000 members. This included everyone who was an active member of this discussion group, going back to late 1999, as well as everyone who had registered to our old website's newsletter. So effectively, we've tripled our membership in less than 18 months. now that we're within striking range of the 10,000 member mark, thanks for thinking about which colleagues you know to invite onto the site. i can think of 3 people i recently met who would find this community interesting and valuable. i'll be inviting all 3 to join. Phil beat me to it, but I was going to suggest something similar. As DDN makes its transition from EDC to TakingITGlobal.org, it would be great if we could start off with a bang and reach the 10,000 member level. So for all of you who blog or participate in other email lists, I'd encourage you to invite people to join DDN. As always, it's free and open to the public. DDN membership allows you to participate in this forum, as well as have your own blog or online community on the DDN website. Here's the form to join the site: http://www.digitaldivide.net/members/add.php Please be sure to tell people that joining DDN is joining an online community, and this includes having a personal profile on the website. You can control how much info you show publicly, but people should know ahead of time, because lately I've been surprised by how many people have emailed me and asked to have their accounts canceled because they didn't want their name appearing anywhere on a website. Anyway, I hope we'll reach the 10,000 member mark very soon. Maybe we could even place bets on what day we'll reach the milestone. :-) andy -- -- Andy Carvin acarvin (at) edc . org andycarvin (at) yahoo . com http://www.andycarvin.com http://www.digitaldivide.net http://www.pbs.org/learningnow -- ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

[DDN] Introduction
Hi, I've been lurking around here for a few weeks already, so I thought I'd finally come out and show myself! I am a decidedly un-techy person living in Portland, OR, but recently I've been working on a project to get an online community site built, so that's sort of pulled me into the digital world. I was quite happy to have come across the Digital Divide - already I'm getting ideas for future directions with this project. My project is to build a community for Burmese activists and refugees, primarily those living in Asia, but basically for activists living all over the world. I'm hoping it will be successful enough to lead into other activities, or getting involved in bringing more and better technology to refugees and activists in SE Asia - either through small grants to fund bills for internet and hardware, or getting involved in FOSS type work. Our developer is an Arakanese-Burmese living in India, who has his own small organization that does comp. training for monks and refugees. So that's already a step in the right direction, as we're paying to get him reconnected so he can continue and expand his work. We've just kicked off a fundraising campaign, to raise the money to get our developer connected so he can continue with actually developing the site. I've got more information about that here, if anyone's interested in participating, (pretty please): http://ethnicvoices.civiblog.org/burmasolidaritynetwork I'm looking forward to getting it running and see where it takes us, and getting involved in more issue-based discussions here. Nice to meet you!
