Looking at the JT65-signals on 14076 yesterday and comparing them with other days the propagation was indeed very poor (at least on my side). The RB reports on W4CQZ's webpage showed similar results. No luck again today. Could be that it is an issue of the poor propagation caused by the present sun wind and it's impact on the magnetic field of the earth. I will try again in CMSK next week when the sun wind has calmed down as the propagation forecast is telling us. Thanks for the report from W9 even though it was too weak for decoding. [digitalradio] Re: PV systems killing Radio? was Are plasma TVs killing radio?
It's very simple: the DC generated by the solar cells needs to be converted to AC so that the energy can be distributed. Modern systems use high frequency inverters to do the job which create a lot of noise. The majority of suppliers only do a minimal filtering. I have one major system about 16m away from my antenna at the roof of my neighbour's barn, 2 systems about 300 m away, more than 30 additional systems in a circle of about 5 km with one system with solar cells completely covering 10,000 sqm (100,000 square feet). I could see and - unfortunately - hear the development within the last 12 months ... The Radio Society of Great Britain represents the radio ham community, though it sees itself as having a wider remit. When not organising competitions to see who has the biggest beard can transmit a 10MHz signal furthest, the RSGB tries to protect the interests of radio users of all kinds by tracking possible causes of interference, which prompts its latest appeal. Recently the interference effort has been focused on mains networking kit - people running Ethernet signals over in-home electrical wires - but the Society reckons that plasma TVs are another source of interference worthy of greater attention. Anecdotal stories abound of plasmas putting out interference below 30MHz, and even extending into the higher frequencies where commercial radio can be found, but the Society is trying to cast a wider net to see if it's a genuine problem. The plan is to make a presentation to CISPR (the International Special Committee on Radio Interference) in the next few weeks if enough complaints can be accumulated - so if you've got a plasma and you think it's plotting against your radio, drop the RSGB a line at plasma.tv@plasma.tv%40rsgb.org.uk http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/08/12/plasma_tv_interference/
[digitalradio] Re: SCS PTC-II and regular digital modes
I use SCS PTC IIs for years and I am very satisfied with their performance. I can confirm the excellent performance of Pactor even under very poor conditions but I don't remember when I have seen the last non-Winlink-transmissions ... Others might have different experience. I have never used the transceiver control facility of the PTC II. If you decide to try DXLab you can use use the following DXLab programs in combination with the PTC II: - Commander to control the transceiver - DXKeeper for logging (not explicitly needed but recommended) - WinWarbler for communication with the PTC II There are other programs which belong to DXLab as well but they are not needed for this specific purpose. For more details please go to http://www.dxlabsuite.com/ which provides all necessary information. To use the PTC II and not the soundcard for PSK and RTTY you have to select RTTY in WinWarbler (make sure that you have defined the PTC II as your RTTY modem in WinWarbler's configuration). You can enter all PTC II commands in WinWarbler's transmit window, i.e. switch between the different modes of the PTC II which includes PSK31, RTTY, CW, Pactor etc. As to my experience the RTTY performance of the PTC II is better than the decoding by MMTTY (included in WinWarbler and several other programs as RTTY engine). You cannot use the broad band decoding option of WinWarbler, however, because this would require the soundcard of your PC to be connected to your transceiver. 73 Juergen, DL8LE --- In digitalradio@yahoogroups.com, g4ilo jul...@... wrote: I have been wondering about getting an SCS multimode controller, the PTC-II USB. I don't want to deny myself the opportunity to use PSK31 or RTTY but the SCS would plug into the rear audio connections of my transceiver and I don't want to have to grope around the back changing plugs just to use soundcard modes. I understand these controllers can do PSK and RTTY as well but I don't see how this works with the programs I am familiar with. I'm also unsure how the transceiver control works. I currently have a separate serial cable to my K3 for this. If any users of the SCS controllers could pass on their experiences to a prospective user I would be extremely grateful. Julian, G4ILO

[digitalradio] Re: Automated Launching of Dxkeeper and Commander when Multipsk starts?
If you have DXKeeper installed then you probably have installed DXLab Launcher as well. If not then download the Launcher from one of DXLab's download sites, http://www.dxlabsuite.com/download.htm , and follow the instructions. - Once you have the Launcher installed run it and open its Config-Window. -Select the application files for Commander, DXKeeper etc. in the DXLab Applications pane. -Check the Enable-boxes for Commander and DXKeeper. - Select multipsk.exe in one line of the Other Applications pane and check the Enable box. - If you like to start all three applications whenever you start the Launcher check Auto Start in the Config-Window as well. Whenever you like to use all three programs start the Launcher and click on start in the Launcher window or - if you have chosen the Auto Start option- all programs will launch automatically. You should be aware, however, that the Launcher will terminate the DXLab applications when you click on terminate in the Launcher window but not Multipsk. Multipsk needs to be shut down manually. [digitalradio] Olivia Frequencies and Modes Re: NEWBIE QUESTION FROM AC5JV
Hi Bonnie, some comments from my experience. I have tried your proposed frequencies for Olivia and they are ok, more or less, but: 10142.5 will have the DK0WCY beacon directly fall into the Olivia signal, therefore I prefer the 10141.5 which is given in your plan as well but not as a center of activity. I suggest to review this situation. 7042.5 is not very well accepted as Olivia center of activity. A much better choice is to go to 7035.5 or 7036.5 just above the PSK activities (see another reply from you as well). Don't forget the 3581 khz USB (+1500 hz), also just above the PSK activities on 80 m. In my 2009 Olivia qso's the majority of my partners were using DM780 (about 40%), Multipsk (about 30%), FLdigi and MixW more or less equally sharing the remaining 30%. It's interesting to see that you can predict more or less if somebody is using DM780 or FLdigi: FLdigi is interpreting some uncommon characters like the German Ä (A Umlaut) etc. in a very specific way, and DM780 has the problem that the first characters of a call at the beginning cannot be decoded. Sometimes I have the impression (and that means I cannot say that my observation is really correct) that MixW users show up with a slightly different signal in the waterfall. I don't know if this is not a secondary effect because MixW-users may set up their radio in a different way.
