Steve, I'm trying to reach you via Skype, but no response. I'm running
the exact same system as you: fldigi 3.11.5 running on Ubuntu 9.04
talking to my radio via a signaLink USB - so we should be able to get to
the bottom of this fairly quickly!

[digitalradio] Running WSPR and WSJT with VOX-type PTT under Linux

2008-12-19 Thread Peter Frenning [OZ1PIF]
This has only been tested on Ubuntu 8.10 with a strong likelihood of
being true for other Linux's as well. What the situation is in Windoze
land I wouldn't know.
The facts are: you can't just leave "PTT Port" empty, as the programs
won't Tx in that case, something needs to be entered that looks
sufficiently like a serial port to satisfy the PTT function of the
program. Since the ports of WSJT and WSPR I've dealt with for Linux
already had "/dev/ttyS0" in that field, and they "worked" even though
there was no actual HW behind that, everything looked healthy to me.
(I'm using a SignaLink USB since I'm using (mostly) a computer with no
built-in RS-232c ports, I could use a USB<->RS232C converter at the
price of adding to the cable fest, but I choose this route instead)

If you want to know how to modify the SignaLink USB to decent
specifications look here:
http://www.frenning.dk/OZ1PIF_HOMEPAGE/SignaLinkUSB-mods.html

The thing which has been giving me the willies, is that either program
would invariably fail after a longer (several hours) or shorter period
of time - shorter if a failure has already happened on the boot of the
OS. Failure mode is invariably "address out of bounds in array indexing".

This finally let me onto the theory that although the kernel would
accept the port manipulation commands, it would just stack them away
somewhere until it couldn't handle any more, whereupon the application
would be given a bogus reference and wham.

I then tried an old trick from my Unix days: in every *nix like OS there
is a "/dev/null" device, a character device that can't ever overflow,
because all commands and data sent to it are immediately discarded,
"sent to the grounding rod" so to speak.

I'm happy to report that WSPR has just survived my 24 hour torture test
(25% Tx/Rx ratio), using "/dev/null" as the bogus "PTT Port", and that
I've just started the same test of WSJT7 in WSPR QSO-mode.

Hi Curt,

Actually what's throwing you here, is the simplicity of the install
process. You download a binary (packed in .tgz format) when you unpack
it it's placed wherever you downloaded to - on my system by default the
Desktop.
You can the execute fldigi by doubleclicking on the filename (in
Nautilus) or the desktop icon. At first run it'll create a hidden folder
(.fligi) in your home directory (/home/yourlogin/.fldigi), containing a
bunch of necessary run-time files.
If you don't like the default light-blue diamond icon for the executable
file, you can fetch the fldigi-psk.png file from the homepage
http://www.w1hkj.com/Fldigi.html place it any convenient location
(.fldigi) right-clik on the executable - select properties -
double-click on the icon - and tell it where to find the icon file.

If you feel adventurous you can also place the binary in the .fldigi
folder and create a desktop link to it.
Good luck.
(BTW: the windows version of fldigi sucks big-time, but the Linux
version rocks!)

[digitalradio] Accurate time-keeping in Linux. An attempt at a "HOWTO"

2008-09-16 Thread Peter Frenning [OZ1PIF]

Timekeeping in Linux (in particular Ubuntu)

It is just as necessary to correct system time in PCs running Linux as it is
when running Windoze (often done with a program called Dimension4).

By default (at least for Ubuntu) Linux is set up to control and adjust
the system time
only at boot-time, this it does in much the same way that D4 does it, by
contacting a time-server via

the internet using the "ntp" protocol.

Running Ubuntu, and other Linuxes using gnome (and possibly the vast
majority of other

Linux flavors too):
1) You can right-click on the clock display;
2) Select "Adjust Date and Time Settings" (or whatever it's called in
your language version);

3) Click on "Unlock" (and give your password when prompted);
4) Go to "Configuration" and select "Synchronize with internet servers";
5) Accept ntpd (ntp daemon) install when prompted;
6) Select 2-4 servers close to your location (for minimum delay) and
7) finally reboot.

Your system will now keep your time within narrow tolerances
automatically, and adjust the update

frequency as needed in order not to deviate significantly from "True" time.

My questions are still valid (even if my data are bogus, in which case I

still remains that my particular combination of Radio, Interface and

[digitalradio] SignaLinkUSB freq response and S/N

2008-09-03 Thread Peter Frenning [OZ1PIF]
Has anyone else tried to characterize the SignaLinkUSB frequency
response and S/N properties?

I Have, and, to put it mildly, I'm underwhelmed. Compared to my old
homebrew interface combined with an aged SoundBlaster16 PCI it sucks as
far as pure data is concerned (I have spectralab dumps to document my
statements; if anyone are interested mail me directly)

The real interesting question here is: how important is this in real
life? Both interfaces work fine doing everyday PSK31, RTTY, SSTV etc,
but how critical does it become when working signals near the detection
limit as in WSJT JT65, FSK441 and very weak HF PSK31?

Why not just continue with the old setup? well, my new LapTop doesn't
have serial ports and my radio (FT-847) no VOX; I do need more than one
Soundcard, and I need something that'll work with Linux. All in all the
SignaLinkUSB sounded attractive judged from reviews and blurbs

[digitalradio] USB -> RS232 adapter for Vista 64bit?

Re: [digitalradio] Re: jt65a is an automatic mode

2007-09-27 Thread Peter Frenning [OZ1PIF]

Bonnie if you are always this untrustworthy, i better remove the link to
your homepage from mine:

/- 1. It has an "AUTOMATIC" button. /
Which button is that? I must be blind, I have conducted more that 1500
QSO whith WSJT in various modes, and have never had a glimpse of such a
button...

/- 2. The operator programs the software to transmit, and it starts
- sending various transmissions automatically. /
Wrong! the operator programs and *selects a message*, which is then
transmitted periodically until the operator decides to do something else!

/- 3. It responds automatically to other stations with pre-programmed
- sequences. /
Plain wrong! It does no such thing, the *operator* responds by selecting
or creating a new message

/- 4. It automatically logs other stations./
It does not, the operator decides if and when.

/- 5. It automatically sends and receives a series of canned QSOs./
Nope, the only thing it does automatically is to start and stop the
tyransmission of *the selected* message at the correct times (a task a
computer is far better suited at than a human!

. Do I have to continue?

Please Bonnie: peddle only what you know to be a fact, and leave the

There is really no reason to select a narrower filter, the DSP in WSJT
does that for you. Actually much is to be said for a very wide filter,
enabling you to see several stations simultaneously on the waterfall
display. The entire spectrum of a JT65A transmission is just about 200Hz
wide, the single tones spaced about 2.7Hz apart.

See http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/JT65.pdf for a much deeper
description of JT65, along with other documentation available at:
