Re: [Discuss] Trying to install Tor on Fedora

2019-05-09 Thread Nancy Allison
Thank you so much for this informative answer, Mike!

I foolhardily went ahead and did manage to run the installation file --
after John Abreau kindly helped me out and explained, among other things,
that Nautilus won't run an executable like the Tor starter file. When I
opened Gladiator or Warrior or Conquistador -- sorry, I don't have it in
front of me and Im forgetting the name -- another file manager, anyway --
and double-clicked the file, it RAN. Hallelujah! So now I have Tor!!! For
a while, it kept wanting to download itself again but I hope that's over.
I'm kind of scared to reboot and see if it keeps doing that but tomorrow is
another day!

I will read over the rest of your email and definitely follow the PGP
steps, I want to understand that better.

Thank you again. Your helpfulness and John's and Rich's have been so
generous, I really appreciate it.

Hi, all. I sent this reply to Rich but forgot to include the list.

I am your Test Case par excellence: someone trying to use Fedora who is not
terribly technical. Can Linux be used by people for whom it is really a
challenge, even things that to technical people are obvious? Here is a
distillation of the later discussion with Rich.

I downloaded the Linux file from the Tor site and it opened automatically.
The next step I need to take is

> > 4. Run the start-tor-browser script.

But I don't know how to do that. What is the file name of the script? There
is no file called "script." Once I know what file it is, do I need to do
something in the command window, like

Re: [Discuss] Trying to install Tor on Fedora

2019-05-07 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, Rich.

Thanks for these instructions.

I went to the tor site and downloaded the files associated with the penguin
cartoon. I assumed that was Linux. I now have a directory containing these
two files:

   - tor-browser-linux64-8.0.9_en-US -- Oh, this is a folder name.
   - tor-browser-linux64-8.0.9_en-US.tar.xz -- this is a file that looks
   like a box

I don't know how to verify the PGP and am skipping that step because I am
foolhardy.

I've opened the folder. It contains two items:

   - A folder called Browser
   - a file called start-tor-browser.desktop -- I doubleclicked this, and
it is now in a text editor.

It is full of instructions that assume a greater level of technical
knowledge than I have.

Rich, what do I do now? Thanks very much.

[Discuss] Trying to install Tor on Fedora

2019-05-07 Thread Nancy Allison
I am trying to install Tor on my Fedora 29 machine.

I found a handy page (
https://www.hiroom2.com/2018/11/28/fedora-29-torbrowser-en/) that contains
two simple steps.

The first step (sudo dnf install -y torbrowser-launcher) gave every
appearance of succeeding. was:

The second step ($ torbrowser-launcher) produces this error message:

bash: $: command not found ...

What do I do to make this work? Thanks for all help.

[Discuss] Who here makes house calls?

2019-02-23 Thread Nancy Allison
Seriously, I am so frustrated and disgusted I will not visit one more site
and follow one more set of incomprehensible suggestions.

I have previously gotten my Brother HL-L2320D and HP Envy 4502 to work with
Linux 16.04 and Fedora 28. I cannot get them to work with Fedora 29. NOTE:
I have never, ever had a painless outcome when updating a Linux distro.
Every single time, whether Ubunto or Fedora, something major has broken.

Currently, both printers show up in the Printers utility for Fedora 29.
They show up in LibreOffice but neither will print. Neither shows when I
attempt to print a PDF. I have already tried various suggestions relating
to CUPS and the Brother driver. I need someone else's expertise to solve
this for me. I am sick of struggling with this stuff.

Seriously, who on this list can help with this and is willing to make a
house call (for pay, of course).

[Discuss] playing "mvimg" .jpg files

2019-02-03 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, all.

I have an android phone (Pixel 2). I sometimes inadvertently take a video
when I mean to take a photo, and so I have various video files. I would at
least like to view them, but when I load them into my fedora 29 laptop and
double-click on them, they do not run.

The filename format is MVIMG_alphanumeric.jpg.

How do I get then to run?

Thanks.

Re: [Discuss] Fedora 28 Doesn't See External DVD Drive on USB Port

2019-01-02 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, David.

Thank you very much for this information. Sorry it has taken me this long
to respond to it!

I ran the cat command and for once something I did in the Terminal window
worked immediately. Here is what it gave me:

#
# /etc/fstab
# Created by anaconda on Thu Jul 19 00:01:06 2018
#
# Accessible filesystems, by reference, are maintained under '/dev/disk'
# See man pages fstab(5), findfs(8), mount(8) and/or blkid(8) for more info
#
/dev/mapper/fedora_localhost--live-root / ext4
defaults1 1
UUID=84fb2b0b-8657-4e21-ba3a-35a140c62cb1 /boot   ext4
defaults1 2
UUID=BC87-05C2  /boot/efi   vfat
umask=0077,shortname=winnt 0 2
/dev/mapper/fedora_localhost--live-home /home ext4
defaults1 2
/dev/mapper/fedora_localhost--live-swap swapswap
defaults0 0

Since I last wrote anything, I've successfully plugged in an ancient HP
Personal Media Drive, which showed up immediately. (Now if I could just
find a way to read the qic files on it ...) So Nautilus successfully
idenfied a new device (which the fstab file should show, right?)

Maybe the DVD drive is just a bum drive. It shows up in Windows, though ...

Thanks for the information you provided.

Re: [Discuss] Fedora 28 Doesn't See External DVD Drive on USB Port

2018-12-31 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, Charles!

Windows 10 sees it.

It is connected through a USB only, but I see a connector with a round pin
in it, so maybe it also has a power cord. I've been googling to see what
comes with it, but it is an odd product and information is scarce and I
can't tell if it originally shipped with a power cord. It's a few years
old.

Windows Device Manager identifies it as TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H ATA Device.

If I can identify a separate power cord, would that make a difference?

Thanks!

Re: [Discuss] Fedora 28 Doesn't See External DVD Drive on USB Port

2018-12-29 Thread Nancy Allison
Thank you, Dan.

You've provided some details that I can follow, but I am not well enough
grounded to know how I would use them. (For example, I have no idea where
fstab lives or how I get to it.) If I can find someone to help me out
painstakingly, with a generous donation of their time and effort, I (they,
really) can undoubtedly fix the problem. I may wait until the next
InstallFest for help.

But this leaves me wondering, can it really be that everyone using Fedora
28 struggles along with this same problem that obviously affects plenty of
people? CDs and DVDs are not used as much as they once were, but they are
still in use. If you google "fedora 28 doesn't recognize external dvd
drive" you get people struggling with this back in 2010 and 2011. Is this
what Fedora is like -- everyone struggles with problems individually? And
you really have to have a lot of technical knowledge to deal with these
problems as they come up. Maybe Fedora is just too tecchie for me, but it
seems as if Ubuntu was, too, when I used it before Fedora. Maybe Red Hat is
easier for a non-technical person to handle?

Just thinking out loud. Thanks for the additional info.

[Discuss] Fedora 28 Doesn't See External DVD Drive on USB Port

2018-12-29 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, all.

When I plug in my external disk drive into my Fedora 28 machine, it does
not show up in Nautilus.

I go looking online, and, sure enough, this problem has occurred for plenty
of people for 5+ years over many releases of Fedora.

I find a discussion in which someone evidently solved the problem. Here is
what the person reported:

"NVM - found the cause. Old entry in fstab for a second swap not present on
sdb1 and first USB disks being assigned sdb. Cleaned that up and now all
drives plugging correctly.
Willtech ( Sep 23 '18 )"

How do I apply this information? Where is fstab? When does a first swap
occur? When does a second swap occur? What does it mean to be assigned sdb?

Here is the URL to the entire discussion:

https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/126908/fedora-28laptop-fails-to-mount-usb-disks/

All suggestions warmly welcomed. I sure would like to see that DVD drive
show up.

[Discuss] Audacity has gone nuts

2018-12-03 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, all.

By any chance, does anyone on this list use Audacity? I used it to record
streaming content with no problem until it suddenly went nuts and provided
hugely distorted sound files, as if the volume had been turned up to 10. I
looked through the settings and even removed it and reinstalled it and
still got the same result.

I've looked in Audacity lists and found one question that was similar, but
I can't follow the discussion technically. I'm not that technical. Has
anyone on this list had a similar experience with Audacity? If so, how did
you solve the problem? Thanks.

Hi, all.

What do you use to aggregate the things you read? I've stumbled upon
Feedspot, which costs $$, and I'm wondering if it is necesssary.

Is this a Linux - vs- Windows- Vs- Apple issue, or am I confused and it
doesn't matter what OS you use?

If this question isn't really germane to BLU, just ignore!

[Discuss] Backing up the entire software installation

2018-10-24 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, all.

I have Fedora 28 and lots of programs installed. I use a backup for my
files, but I dread the day I have to start with a new computer and
reinstall all my programs.

Is it possible to create a copy of everything, my Fedora 28 operating
system, all the programs, all the nifty Firefox plug-ins, all my Favorites
-- everything? So if this hard drive died and I needed to get a new laptop,
I could copy over the entire contents of this computer without having to
recreate it?

If so, how would I do that?

If I can't do that, how can I at least generate some kind of list of
everything I have installed so I don't have to rack my brains trying to
remember everything I had on this box?

Thanks.

[Discuss] Jekyll Developer/Teacher Needed

2018-09-26 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, all.

I am trying to develop a Jekyll website and am getting hung up. I followed
a couple of youtube videos and downloaded all kinds of Ruby tools, but
still I"m getting error messages telling me that a gem is missing. When I
try to figure out what to do, I get still more error messages.

I can struggle forever, or I can pay someone who knows how to do it and who
is willing to teach me so I can handle it on my own from then on. So, I am
looking for someone to help me develop this blog page, and I am willing to
pay for it.

Would anyone on this group be interested, or would you know anyone who can
develop a blog with Jekyll? A Linked-In search turns up a lot of people who
know Jekyll, but they seem to have different job titles, not really website
developers. I really need some help! I want to run a blog and I don't want
to be dependent on the Wordpress monster. Been there, done that.

All suggestions gladly received.

Re: [Discuss] International Keyboard for Fedora 28

2018-09-10 Thread Nancy Allison
Thanks, Jerry.

I have a beginning problem, which is that I don't know what "keymaps"
refers to, a graphic that will show me how the keyboard is laid out, or the
actual programming that will install the alternate keyboard layout in
Fedora so I can switch to it when I want to type accents.

While not knowing that, I went ahead, opened a command window, and listed
the us keyboards and found one that looks useful: us-intl.

I then navigated to the keymaps directory ( /usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/xkb),
searched for us-intl, and found it. It is a compressed file. When I
double-click it, Fedora wants to know where to put the files. I stopped at
this point because I have no idea what I'm doing.

Questions:

1. Do I want to extract the file?
2. If I do, once I extract it, what do I do with it?
3. Am I unzipping the actual keyboard layout, or some kind of explanatory
document, and the keyboard layout itself is somewhere else?

Thanks.

[Discuss] International Keyboard for Fedora 28

2018-09-08 Thread Nancy Allison
Hello, all.

I am accustomed to using the US-international keyboard on my Windows
systems. I'd like to use it in Fedora 28, too, so I don't have to learn
alternate keyboard layouts.

It is not listed, at least not by the name I'm used to, in the
Settings/Region & Language list of keyboard layouts. There are about 35
French keyboard layouts to choose from and I don't know how to figure out
which one is closest to the US International keyboard. Does anyone know?

(The French keyboard from France lays out the keys differently and I'm all
for an easy life and don't want to have to remember to switch the locations
of A and Q every time I type something, so I don't want to use it.)

Has anyone else dealt with this question? What did you decide on? All
suggestions welcome.

[Discuss] Installing a Font in Fedora 28

2018-07-24 Thread Nancy Allison
Hello, all.

I am new to Fedora (v. 28) and need to install a font. (I actually never
tried to add a font in Ubuntu, either, in the past.)

I've looked at the Fedora Fonts directory, but I see a listing of icons
instead of font filenames. I don't know what kind of fonts Fedora uses.

Once I know, would it be as simple as copying a new font into that
directory, in order to have the use of it? I need to use a Koine Greek
font. I searched for "Greek" and "Koine" in that font directory and found
nothing.

Thanks for all suggestions.

I did install both free and unfree, I distinctly recall doing this. Is
there a separate step to enable them? I've rebooted several times but the
videos still do not play.

I checked this Youtube page (https://www.youtube.com/html5), and H.264 and
MSE and H.264 are not checked.

Thanks.

Hi, John and all.

Thanks for these suggestions. My goodness, what a messy situation. I'm
copying Jerry Feldman directly, because I know he uses Fedora and knows it
well. Jerry, is there any better way that John and I can both benefit from?

Thanks.

Follow-up: I've followed steps 1 and 1 (that's how they're numbered) on
this page and installed RPM Fusion for Fedora 28. Then I rebooted. Still no
luckc playing videos in Facebook, Washington Post, or Vimeo (so far).

[Discuss] Can't play Facebook videos in Firefox

2018-07-22 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, all.

I have just switched to Fedora 28 from Ubuntu, and now Facebook videos do
not run in Firefox.

I googled this issue and found a topic about it:

https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/120605/video-problems-on-firefox-on-fedora-28/

I entered the command suggested and got this result:

[theauthor@new-host ~]$ sudo dnf groupupdate multimedia
[sudo] password for theauthor:
Last metadata expiration check: 2:28:43 ago on Sun 22 Jul 2018 02:16:22 PM
EDT.
13Group 'Multimedia' is already installed.
No match for group package "gstreamer1-plugin-mpg123"
Dependencies resolved.
Nothing to do.
Complete!

I then entered the second command as suggested:

[theauthor@new-host ~]$ sudo dnf install compat-ffmpeg28
Last metadata expiration check: 2:30:13 ago on Sun 22 Jul 2018 02:16:22 PM
EDT.
No match for argument: compat-ffmpeg28
Error: Unable to find a match

I don't know what to do next to fix this problem. All suggestions
gratefully received.

Re: [Discuss] Fedora and Recoll

2018-07-22 Thread Nancy Allison
I'm continuing my question about installing (or finding) Recoll on my
Fedora installation. I mistakenly responded individually to Jim. He asked
me what version of Fedora I'm using. Does this indicate that I am using
version 28:

uname -or

4.16.6-200.fc28.x86 64 GNU/Linux

Then, Jim suggested that I could use sudo with the line that he suggested:

sudo #dnf install recoll-1.23.7

I entered that and got this:

[theauthor@new-host ~]$ sudo #dnf install recoll-1.23.7
usage: sudo -h | -K | -k | -V
usage: sudo -v [-AknS] [-g group] [-h host] [-p prompt] [-u user]
usage: sudo -l [-AknS] [-g group] [-h host] [-p prompt] [-U user] [-u user]
[command]
usage: sudo [-AbEHknPS] [-r role] [-t type] [-C num] [-g group] [-h host]
[-p
prompt] [-T timeout] [-u user] [VAR=value] [-i|-s] []
usage: sudo -e [-AknS] [-r role] [-t type] [-C num] [-g group] [-h host] [-p
prompt] [-T timeout] [-u user] file ...
[theauthor@new-host ~]$

When I then searched for Recoll, nothing showed up.

All suggestions gratefully received.

[Discuss] Fedora and Recoll

2018-07-21 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, all.

I have just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora. In Ubuntu, I used Recoll. The
Recoll web page says it is standard in Fedora, but when I search for it I
can't find it. Is the Recoll page incorrect? Or is some other tool bundled
with Fedora and I just need to learn what it is?

I don't care if I use Recoll or something else, I just need a way to search
my files.

Suggestions gratefully received.

[Discuss] Jekyll users, experts, developers anywhere?

2018-06-01 Thread Nancy Allison
Hello, all.

I am investigating software for a new blog. I've used Wordpress before and
don't want to get bogged down in it again. I did some searches for open
source blogging software, and it looks as if Jekyll might be a clean,
simple alternative that meets my requirements. (However, I'm willing to
believe that another blogging tool might be better.)

I am not the world's most technical person, so I'm looking for help. The
Jekyll Quick Start Guide begins with this sentence:

"If you already have a full Ruby
development environment with all headers and RubyGems
 installed (see Jekyll’s requirements
), you can create a
new Jekyll site by doing the following:"

This is Greek to me. No, I don't have a Ruby development environment and
have no idea how I'd get one.

I'm looking for suggestions for user groups, forums, consultants, etc.,
etc. All suggestions gratefully received.

Hi, Eric.

Just for my edification, what does dark themed mean? Is it an aesthetic
thing or a technical one? Does it confer a particular advantage?

Thanks!

Re: [Discuss] LibreOffice and .docx files

2017-12-11 Thread Nancy Allison
Hello, all.

I painfully conclude that I must install Word on my Ubuntu 16.04 machine. I
need to be able to handle Word files consistently.

So I opened Synaptic Package Manager and searched for Microsoft Word. No
luck.

What do I do? How do I get it installed?

I know, it pains me! But I don't see a way around it. All suggestions
gratefully received!

[Discuss] LibreOffice and .docx files

2017-12-04 Thread Nancy Allison
Hello, all.

I am using Ubuntu 16.04 and LibreOffice 5.1.6.2.

I've been sent a .docx file with a fairly complex layout, and the layout is
trashed immediately upon opening in LibreOffice. I know from past
experience that docx files that I've modified in LibreOffice are, if
possible, even nastier when reopened in Word.

Is there a Word-compatible open source program that truly does not trash
the formatting? Or is it simply not possible to pass documents back and
forth between Word and an open source program like LibreOffice or
OpenOffice? I used Open Office years ago, haven't used it recently, it used
to trash the files, too.

All suggestions gratefully received.

Hi, all.

I don't love the cloud and would rather have something that lives on my

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Re: [Discuss] Ubuntu 16.04 Wifi Connection Disappeared

2017-01-03 Thread Nancy Allison
I'm looking at this webpage, which looked promising. Why does it want me to
download a driver?

http://smallbusiness.chron.com/disable-wireless-toshiba-satellite-52666.html

The Fn-F8 key combo is not doing anything, unfortunately. Fn-F12 (which
looks like an oldfashioned glass thermometer with the bulb on top) turns on
and off the Bluetooth icon.

Dang.

I wonder if I will have to wait until the next BLU installfest to get it
working. Computers are great when they work.

What did I doo!

Re: [Discuss] Ubuntu 16.04 Wifi Connection Disappeared

2017-01-03 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, everyone. Thank you for your great replies! I hope this additional
detail is useful. (Yep, means problem not solved yet.)

Greg:

I followed your numbered steps, which were great, through #3. At #4, I see
your screenshot. However, the list on the left contains only two items:

Wired
Network proxy

Airplane Mode is off, but there is no Wireless item on the right, and no
wireless networks are listed.

Greg and Mike: I opened the terminal window and entered this command:

sudo service network-manager restart

I put in my password.

For a while, a handy Enable Wi-Fi option appeared in a menu at the top of
the window. I clicked it! But still, it didn't discover my local wi-fi
network, so I thought, "I'll reboot, and when it loads up, it will find my
Wi-Fi network, and all will be well."

Alas, it was not to be. Instead, the Enable Wi-Fi option disappeared once
again from the list, and of course my local network was not listed among
the wi-fi networks.

So, I was back to square one.

Mike, I have a Toshiba Satellite. After a little googling about identifying
my wireless card, I ran lspci in the terminal window, and I'm seeing:

network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 3160 (rev cb)
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411PCI
Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 0c)

Is this the information you were looking for? Ubuntu 14.nn on this laptop
linked successfully to the Internet for quite a while. But maybe Ubuntu
16.04 could have problems with the same networking card?

As a last thought, I've rebooted numerous times, so even if I messed up my
password a time or two, I don't think I could have messed it up every time.

Thank you all so much. If there's more information that would help, ask
away. If you can think of any next steps I should try, I'm all ears!

[Discuss] Ubuntu 16.04 Wifi Connection Disappeared

2017-01-03 Thread Nancy Allison
Preface: I decided to use Ubuntu on my laptop as a way of thumbing my nose
at Microsoft and Apple. Most Linux people are pretty technically savvy. Me,
not so much.

Suddenly, my 16.04 installation doesn't connect to wifi. I am writing to
you on my Windows 7 machine, which does successfully connect to the
self-same wifi network.

In the Ubuntu interface, I tried disabling my home wifi network, foolishly
thinking that Ubuntu 16.04 would successfully find it when I rebooted. No
dice.

I found a website with a long discussion of this Ubuntu 16.04 problem. I
would type all that stuff beginning with "sudo" if I knew where to type it,
and if I weren't afraid that I might misunderstand something, type
something wrong, and make the situation worse.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/762198/16-04-lts-wifi-connection-issues

I would be very grateful for suggestions about how to fix the problem.
