Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA SF Presents When UX Research is Evil

2009-04-26 Thread Christopher Monnier
Although I won't be able to make it, one thing I would (if I could
make it) like to hear discussed is the issue of allowing users who
don't otherwise struggle with using something to hold misperceptions
about how that something works, and when that's appropriate or not
appropriate. I tried to explain what I mean on my blog, but as I
thought about this problem myself my conclusion was that if the cost
of misperception is low, then allowing misperception may be
appropriate, while if the cost of misperception is high, then
allowing misperception is inappropriate.

[IxDA Discuss] Call for applications for IxDA Board of Directors vacancy

2009-04-26 Thread IxDA Board of Directors
The invitation is now open for inspired, creative and active leaders in our
community to apply for an open position on our IxDA Board of Directors. With
much regret, one of our current IxDA Board members, Jim Leftwich, has
decided to step down. We thank him for his service to the organization and
will miss his presence.

For this particular position, we are looking for someone who has a strong
interest in the communications / PR / marketing needs of IxDA. With over
10,000 members and new channels opening up to us everyday, particularly
internationally, we need to have a strong communications strategy that looks
at both internal and external needs.

IxDA Board Directors are responsible for providing leadership in key roles
important to ensuring the strength of our organization and network.
BoardDirectors must be willing to devote an average of four hours per
week,
involving communication and coordination with fellow Directors and the
community toward our goals and associated initiatives. This position would
start immediately and end in February 2011.

We're confident that effective leaders will emerge from our vibrant
community! If you feel you've got what it takes to work with others to help
guide IxDA toward bigger and greater goals, we invite you to apply by
completing the application questionnaire.

http://alturl.com/npsd

In order to expedite this process, we would like to receive applications no
later than Sunday, May 3rd, at 11:59 pm EDT.

Many thanks for your consideration and time. If you have any questions about
the position, please do not hesitate to ask.

Janna DeVylder

President, IxDA

Re: [IxDA Discuss] [Event] Recap: IxDA New York's April Event at Liquidnet

2009-04-26 Thread Steve Baty
Peter,

No, thank *you* and everyone involved in hosting the event. I was very
fortunate to be able to watch the event via the live stream through the UX
Workshop and enjoyed it incredibly. I look forward to the next event with a
great deal of interest (Cindy's presentation at IA Summit was one of my
favourites).

Regards
Steve

2009-04-26 Thread NYC IxDA
Thanks to everyone who came out last Wednesday for Kim Goodwin's talk on
designing a unified user experience. It was nice to get a better
understanding of how Cooper Design approaches project work and their design
philosophy. A special shout-out to Kim for taking time out of her busy
schedule to speak to us, and to Liquidnet for providing the event space and
refreshements!

I hope to see all of you in a few weeks at our May event, “Experience
Themes: A Storymaking Technique Applied to Design” featuring Cindy Chastain.
The event takes place on Tuesday the 12th. Look for more details soon!

See you then,

Re: [IxDA Discuss] How to get better results from developers

2009-04-26 Thread Daniel Szuc
Good post.

What is the reward?

If I am rewarded for working to specification and implementing on
time with little regard to what works for the business or customers,
thats what I will do.

If I am rewarded for overlaying nice visuals on top of a business
problem that has not been articulated properly, thats what I will do.

Much of this assumes you are all working to the same objectives
towards something better. Often teams don't and that's where the
problem lies.

Its takes a leader to gel people behind a common goal.

You often see this in sport where you see teams playing in sync and
see how well they have been coached towards something more than the
individual needs in terms of their preparation and willingness to
abide by team rules i.e. I will give up my position on something,
because I know it will make for something better overall. Easy to
say, harder to do.

rgds,
Dan
