[IxDA Discuss] Help us improve fivesecondtest.com
Hello, My name is Matt and I am the creator of the fivesecondtest.com website. Last month we rolled out http://beta.fivesecondtest.com and we have since been actively making improvements based on user feedback. I am hoping to get some feedback from the greater UX community that will help us make the service all the more useful. The beta is currently invite only, so please let me know in the comments if you would be interested in helping us out and I can set up accounts for you. Thanks, - Matt Milosavljevic Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] drop down samples
Hello Henry, Adding functionality to dropdowns is something we explored quite a bit on a project I worked on for E*Trade. One function we developed was the ability to add new items to the drop down list. We placed the function for adding a new item at the bottom of the list in parentheses. Choosing %u201C(add new choice)%u201D causes a small modal dialog box to appear, where the user can create the new choice. Another function that is accessible from a dropdown is to create custom subsets of tables, or what we referred to as column views. If the user selects %u201CManage Column Views%u201D from the column view dropdown, the first screen in a Guided Workflow appears in a floating window. The user chooses an existing column view as the basis for creating the new view. The user can also delete a column view from the list on this screen. The user can also delete a column view from the list on this screen. I'd be happy to send you some screen shots if that would be helpful. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Inspirations from art
When it comes to designing, is anyone here greatly influenced by things outside of what we normally design? By this, I mean primarily any particular artists or movements (eg, minimalism, abstract, Picasso etc) If so, how did your design change? Or does music play a role? We've discussed what music we listen to when working but I sometimes find that listening to particular types of music influences the mood of my designs. For example, listening to Mark Hollis' solo album inspires a stark look, but this gets richer with David Sylvian, and more 'out there' (rock and roll!) when listening to the Stereophonics. I'd be interested in seeing any examples of things designed by IxDers with a particular influence behind. Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Inspirations from art
The first mac I ever owned was sold to me by a friend/co-worrker etc. When I first booted it up a dialog box appeared that said Bow down to the Almighty Andrew and their was two buttons one said Amen and the other said No. If I clicked No the system shut down. I think this teaching tactic belongs in the inspirational art category. Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Inspirations from art
I'm a avid musician - I've been making music longer than I've been designing. For me there are many parallels between music and design. Most of my musical 'career' has been dedicated to writing and performing original material. I find the act of composition, or of arranging someone else's material to fit the band I'm working with to be very informative to my work as a designer. I've definitely learned more about design from music than any other source. Frank Lloyd Wright saw music as a metaphor for architecture. He demanded all his students study and perform music. The immediacy of musical performances forces one to focus attention and make split second judgements about balance, aesthetics, movement, timing, and so much more. I don't think I would have become a designer if I wasn't first a musician. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Strong influences on my current work include backlit indicator lights, jewel boxes with hidden little drawers and compartments, international signs and icons, telephones, and two-way radios. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Inspirations from art
First, I want to say that my recent post on JohnnyHolland.org (http://johnnyholland.org/magazine/2009/04/function-to-connection/) relates to this in so far as to looking to art as the source/soul of design. More personally, I have looked a lot to traditional craft, art design by some native cultures. People may look to the Bauhaus, but before I knew of the BH I was inspired by Japanese craft, architecture, and art. It's mixture of minimalism with naturalism has always appealed to me. But other artists for palette and texture and use of metaphor have also inspired: Chagall Picasso have been long time faves of mine whom I return to over and over for inspiration. This isn't inspiration to derive direct translation into my work, but for the possible and the beautiful. -- dave . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I'm aware that different countries call there mobile phones (as we call them here in Australia) different names. In the USA it seems to be a cell phone, in parts of Asia where I've worked it is a handy phone. Any others? I need this for a way of a user differentiating mobile phone numbers from land-line phone numbers. thanks Stephen . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I think it would be great to have a little description of the purpose and benefits of the site (besides the phrase up there).
