Re: [IxDA Discuss] Traffic analysis tools?

2009-12-29 Thread Chad Jennings
May not meet all of your requirements, but Google Analytics (https://www.google.com/analytics/provision/
) is free and provides a huge range of tools and reports on site usage
including click-maps and A/B/multi-variant testing.

Of course one cannot necessarily read much user intent from analytics
only, that's why I wouldn't necessarily call it 'measuring
usability'. It is good for testing hypothesis and locating areas for
greater qualitative research. For example, you can set up funnels and
track where users are exiting a workflow or which are your top
landing or exit pages (sometimes this can surprise you) and make sure
that maps to your assumptions about how users are using your site.

I was not involved in the setup of our analytics. I imagine this usage
data is stored in the google cloud (thus not meeting your first
requirement) but blurb is a stickler for security and privacy so we
wouldn't be using this unless it met those requirements.

I am looking for some traffic analysis systems/tools that should be
used in measuring usability. The main requirements are:

* standalone - no data can be send outside the company environment,

* wide spectrum of (easy readable) reporting: the-more-the-better.

Additionaly - some kind of support for interface-analysis (e.g.
possibility to compare metrics for two or three randomly displayed
versions of the same page) would be nice, as well as all these
candies like site overlay.

Any recommendations?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Breadcrumbs including page title or no?

2009-09-01 Thread Chad Jennings
Audrey, I can totally empathize with desire to simplify, simplify,
simplify. There is some credence to the SEO argument as having a
redundancy between the URL, page title (as shown on browser),
headline, and breadcrumbs (or sub header) are variables in improving
page rank.

The Institute of Design in Chicago (my alma mater) has Master of
Design Methods which is a nine month executive master's degree.

Snip
The Master of Design Methods (MDM) is a nine month (or 2-3 year part-
time) executive master's degree for exceptional design, management,
engineering and other professionals who wish to acquire robust design
methods and frameworks and to apply design thinking to the development
of products, communications, services, and systems. MDM courses cover
design methods and frameworks in areas like user observation and
research; prototyping of new services, products and businesses;
creating systems of innovation; visualizing alternative futures; and
linking user innovation to organizational strategy.
Qualifications for admission are rigorous, including a minimum of five
years professional experience, with evidence of leadership as a team/
project leader or product manager; recognition of professional work in
the form of awards, publication in professional journals, and letters
of evaluation from peers; and specific examples of achievements in
design or product development/management.

On a related note, I do wish that a premier design school (e.g.

the need for online / part-time IxD executive MFA program for
practitioners, along the executive MBA model with a mix of online
learning and on campus sessions. Forgive me if I've overlooked an
existing program, but it seems (just based on this discussion list)
that there is a significant demand for this option, particularly
with the current economic pressures. Employed designers could
leverage company sponsorship to work towards their executive MFA
using online materials with infrequent on campus (2-3 all weekend
sessions per semester) crits / intensive workshops to address the
need for face-to-face interaction. It seems like the field has
matured to a point where programs like this should exist, does it
not?

[IxDA Discuss] Online Questionnaire Best Practices (Anyone remember that Interactions article?)

2008-10-21 Thread Chad Jennings

Howdy all -
I am looking for a resource which outlines list best practices for
online questionnaire creation. Want to provide some guidance to our
marketing team. I remember reading a great one or two page article on
Top Ten Best Practiced for User Questionnaires or something like
that in an issue of Interactions magazine a year or so ago, but cannot
for the life of me track it down. It had a some great items such as
starting with easy to answer questions and to not include a middle,
neutral point (i.e. Satisfied, Neutral, Dissatisfied), etc..

Anybody remember this article or have a similar resource?

As an aside, this Quant research will be complimented with some
Qualitative studies, just mentioned to avoid starting a thread on the
pros and cons of each.

Thanks for the help.
Cheers,
Chad
