[IxDA Discuss] Desktop Application: Look and Feel

2009-03-02 Thread oliver green
This is a two part question:

[1] If there are a number of desktop software products for a platform,
other than menu placement, and branding,
what factors should be considered to provide the same look and feel?

[2] What technologies can be used to create these for desktop applications?

[IxDA Discuss] test for indirect effects

2008-06-11 Thread oliver green
Hi all,

We have added a visualization to a product in the current release. The
visualization was to better understand the state. The users though are
not really being able to understand the state too well - i.e. the
visualization in itself is not working as well as we expected. BUT it
seems like they are using the product a lot more since the
visualization makes it look interesting or they are curious.

How can we test for the indirect effects of the visualization? And how
can we confirm our observation that users are using the product more
since the visualization makes it look interesting or they are
curious.

Thanks,
Oliver

[IxDA Discuss] Creating notes for affinity diagrams

2008-05-14 Thread oliver green
Hi All,

I am writing up notes for an affinity diagram session. I see that
users are repeating some points during the interviews - i.e. these are
issues that a majority of users are facing. Should I make just one
note per issue or every time the issue is raised?

I guess what I am trying to ask is that should the weight/occurrence
of an issue also be recording during an affinity diagramming session?

Thanks,
Oliver

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Use of colors/shapes in tools for education

2008-01-03 Thread Oliver Green
Thanks Paul - your answer was very useful. The tool that I am
evaluating basically uses 6-8 different colors to convey certain
scopes. It seems to me that users (in this case students) might
take too long to learn the differences or associate a color with the
appropriate scope.

[IxDA Discuss] analyzing qualitative data

2007-11-14 Thread oliver green
Hello all,

I have a background in statistics and it is easy for me to analyze
quantitative data, but I am at a loss when it comes to analyzing
qualitative data. I bought the book Qualitative Data Analysis : An
Expanded Sourcebook by Alan Michael Huberman, but it was difficult to
follow since it did not give examples that I can relate to. I would
really appreciate it if someone could point me to information that
will help me learn more about this topic.

Thanks,
Oliver

[IxDA Discuss] Examples where personas are *not* useful

Hi everyone,

I am trying to understand the finer nuances of using personas. The
various articles/book chapters that I have read talk about instances
where using personas would be useful. But I feel that to really
understand a methodology, one should be familiar with the weaknesses
as well. So, can you give me examples where using personas would not
be advisable/helpful?
