Re: [IxDA Discuss] [plug] In-progress book about interaction design on Kickstarter

2009-09-15 Thread Pedro ADLER Jorge
hi Nick,

writing a book about our craft
check out Kim Goodwin's book - Designing for the Digital Age. It
really covers everything you need to know about our craft (except
what was already covered in About Face) and the relationship to other
design disciplines.

would be interesting to know more about what does your book add to
the already existent ones? and the target audience. From your PDF it
seems more towards educating product managers / business.

Cheers,
Adler

Sending a reminder to the global list in case there is anyone new around.
Cheers,

Dear all,

It's time for another gathering on Tue, Mar 10. Our monthly meetings
had some breaks, but I guess the busy life of HK justifies that.

Where: Fringe Club HK (MTR Central Exit D2)
When: 7.30pm, Tue, Mar 10

The format will be casual, but all are encouraged to bring something
to discuss -- recent work, an interesting topic, a question.

I'll share my insights from the Interaction Design conference in
Vancouver (5-8 Feb). Perhaps, you also went to a conference and would
like to share that with us?

See you there!

What kind of task users will perform? Sharing the sound files is a
good idea if other researchers help out treat the data and share
their findings.

Is it possible to categorize the sound files in other parameters, for
example geographic location? Could we group sound files, for example
sessions of 45 minutes in same day?

[IxDA Discuss] His this an Interaction Design issue?

2008-04-08 Thread Pedro Neves
Olá,

I'm involved in a organisation of a meeting to promote a urban historic
centre renewal trough the participation of the highest number of actors that
use the respective space.

Due to my designer / architect profile and the interest about the issues of
interaction design in its more broad usages, I wold like to have a sense of
receptivity of the implementation of Interaction design work process in this
kind of initiatives.

At the end, if using the interaction design designation it's suitable, after
all we wish to give conditions for the citizens to design the interactions
of the users in this urban context (Lisbon - Portugal).

Thanks

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Sources for Design Inspiration

2008-02-13 Thread Pedro Soares Neves
Dan Saffer, great slide show thanks.

I share with you the inspiration sources, just a comment about the
absence of movement in Architecture, Corbusier had the concept of
promenade architectural and since then the architecture composition
it's seen as a narrative.

Arts and Crafts in fact its a big reference, and it's deeply related
with my greater source of inspiration.

The sense of use in objects, the way that they are personalised, and
get old, the form that the objects gain with use, the different
usages that objects have even when not design for that function, this
kind of manifestations surround us, mainly in the less consumerist
countries.

There are some references that made me think about graphic presentation of
complex data.

Stamen Design it's around since 2001 and have a success history in data

In 2004 was released a book called Total Interaction from Magnus Rembold
and Jürgen Späth* *professors in University of Applied Sciences and Arts in
Zürich, Switzerland:

TED presented in 2006 a marvelous talk about Debunking third-world myths
with the best stats you've ever seen where Swedish professor Hans Rosling

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxD translation ?

2008-01-31 Thread pedro
Perfect Luís!

our community in Lisbon arrived into a consensus, we will maintain
the original English version name.

- this from professional to professional, I think that for each usage
the sensitivity of the speaker will determine if immediate translation
it's needed.

In fact the English words usage in our Portuguese world sometimes
it's a cheap and low quality attempt of creating some kind of
fashionable aura around something.

Translations are needed, and wen we talk about translations, we talk
about thinking the idea from a different culture point of view, it's
not only the words, but also the sense that it's cause. (as Luís
said)

That's why discussing this theme in the IxDA context it's so
important.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Book proposals to look at

2008-01-21 Thread pedro
A book release it's as posted by Dan Brown, a group of factors that
create the product. But above all the relation between the publisher
and the author it's essential, many of the great works, books,
films, music etc... comes from author creating it's publishing
conditions, the do it your self it's the guarantee of publishing
without any restrictions for the author. Personally this is my
experience, with some friends we have created magazines, movies in
dvd, and even books, all at our risk, and from our point of view
it's always worthy.

I'm happy you are happy to see action from Lisbon. :)

When I've made reference the closed way in the APPU, was not in the
context of the civil association and the open associative membership,
that I think it's great and a an important initiative.

I don't want to be unfair. And I don't what to measure forces that
I don't have (please), I just what to know the possible relation
between the APPU and the idea of Face2face IxD group in Lisbon, but
for that we really need to talk, the question its that Bruno just
doesn't reply to my emails...

Thank you for your availability and lets meet.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] When those who know little about Usability offer Usability Services

2007-12-11 Thread Pedro Custdio
Pedro,

although I'm happy to see some action and some liveness coming from
Lisbon, I honestly believe that you're taking the wrong approach
here...

Reading you stating that APPU works in a closed way just doesn't
make sense and it's actually not true at all, especially if one
considers that APPU it's according to the portuguese law, a civil
association and open to anyone who wants to join in as member as
stated on it's website.

It's also very sad to read here by your own letters that it survives
at the expense of a very close circuit, which has not only being
growing, but it has only grown by the efforts of its members to
actually promote the subject of user interaction and usability in
national and international terms.

I personally think you're being most unfair here...

Second, it's a fact that Bruno isn't currently working in Portugal,
which put him more or less on/off phisically, the truth is that he has
been always virtually present in Portugal even when is not here in
person.

But APPU isn't Bruno alone so you can always address any of the
other public members of the association. I'm certain that as a
member of association you've certainly received several emails and
invitations to all the APPU promoted actions.

Being one of the founding members, I'm really sad to see that
instead of joining forces with APPU you've decided to measure forces
and directly attack the work of others, that like yourself are only
claiming more work/awareness and action around interaction design in
Lisbon/Portugal.

I do sincerely hope that you might come to your senses and realize
that the best way is definitely by joining forces and not the other
way around... at least I'm a strong believer that together we can
make a difference and not the other way around.

Feel free to drop me a line and we'll meet to talk.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] When those who know little about Usability offer Usability Services

2007-12-10 Thread Pedro Soares Neves
I'm also from Lisbon, and I know Bruno.

The Design associative scene in Portugal it's very recent and don't
have a clear structure.

Within this context the APPU association it's a good initiative but
due to the absence of associative basis in terms of a more broad
design association culture, survives with a very paused heart beat,
and unfortunately at a closed circuit.

At some time ago I have decided to organise a series of meetings
around the Interaction design concepts, and there are some interest,
we already meet once, and there's some expectative about the follow
ups feed into a mailing list of 35 professionals at this moment.

Me and other people that already have some curiosity around the
interaction design issues in Lisbon and the developments will welcome
Bruno for moving more meetings and to clarify the IxDA face to face
Lisbon structure.

All the best.

Freeze (computing), when computer software becoming unresponsive
Freeze (exhibition), an influential art show which established the
Young British Artists
Freeze (software engineering), a period of stricter rules for
changing the software

Freeze drying, a method of rapidly removing moisture from food

Re: [IxDA Discuss] frustation meter

2007-12-05 Thread Pedro Soares Neves
Participation it's the key attitude for knowing the results of your
testing, just overview the users, ask them, make a form, think the
possible deviations of the responses. In the limit make the users
design your product. If not the users just will transform them into
their best personalisation usage levels.

[IxDA Discuss] Graffiti IXD

2007-10-14 Thread Pedro Neves
I'm a retired graffiti writer, pioneer of this type of manifestation
in Lisbon, Portugal, at the same time that I've graduated in
communication design (1999).

After graduation and one year in Prague I have quitted practicing, the
mercantilist society that we live in take over graffiti in Lisbon,
cans clothes even mass media adopted the language, and the dream of 10
young creative minds (that I was one) was drown by the incontrollable
mass of new writers that without any criteria made many mistakes
transforming Lisbon as many other cities full of visual noise that
have plasticity but associated to the drama in some sort of Nietzsche
way. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Nietzsche

Well I've searched answers in a Urban design PhD, in Barcelona, and in
a Master course in Rome about the theme of participation, trying to
find continuously answers to the problem created in my mind that
relates the will of participation of a teenager and the absence of
opportunities for doing something visible, collectively apprehensible,
by partners and competitors, growing this way a true relation with
places and society, always protected by anonymity.

My (very resumed) life history enplaned here have the purpose of
putting in focus a suggestion of relation, do you see some or in fact
I'm in the wrong discussion list?

Best regards

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxD Managers (was: d schools)

2007-10-14 Thread Pedro Neves
I have no big opinion about that, I think that each one must follow
their paths, if they are more creative or more management style, the
most important it's the final product or service, and in that point
of view can affect citizens, users.

The management, the coordination, it's an important task but it's
just a task, don%u2019t let the power affect the good strait
production and creative side of human nature.
