Re: [Gfoss] [OSGeo-Discuss] Re: Last chance before cancelling: OSGeo Hacking event in a monastry near Bolsena (Italy)!?
Hi, Does anyone know what's the best (cheapest) option to get to Bolsena by train or bus from directions like Germany (Berlin), Czech Republic (Prague) or - would be best - Poland (Warsaw)? Any tested traveling options? Perhaps there someone is going to travel by car from Germany or Czech Republic, and has 1-2 free sits. Certainly, I'll share costs. RE: [OSGeo-Discuss] Planet OSGeo
I guess I'm assuming that Mateusz talked to Christopher before posting this? Anyway, I'd certainly welcome this kind of service. If there is community buy-in and Christopher isn't interested in setting it up, I'd be happy to install it on osgeo2. I've worked with it a bit for an unrelated project, and it's really easy to deal with in its basic configuration, even to the extent of pulling its subscription list from an external (Google Docs, etc) CSV file. If there's enough interest on this list, then let's pull it over to WebCom for discussion of details and take care of it from there. [OSGeo-Discuss] Planet OSGeo
Folks, Is there any plan or motion to setup an official OSGeo Planet? Chris developed and maintains it at http://planetosgeo.crschmidt.net/ and it gathers a number of OSGeo bloggers, so the idea works! Perhaps it's a good idea to setup (or move) Chris' work to planet.osgeo.org and make it more an official OSGeo Community thing. There is a number of well-known and popular planets around the Web: http://planet.debian.org/ http://planet.gnome.org/ http://planet.ubuntu.com/ etc. and all of them play very important role in these communities. Perhaps this subject has been discussed already, but I couldn't find anything in the archives. Any thoughts? Highlighting blogs from Friends of OSGeo would be neat, along with other things I like: * polls * job postings * script sharing * event planning tools * more that I can't remember... Unfortunately I don't have the time to really give that a start and it would require support from the web committee. I like the idea Mateusz. [OSGeo-Discuss] Looking for free Country/State/City/districts maps
Hi folks, I have a specific need for a customer: they have a flash application which let users to click an object and then open child levels. Example: when users click a country, he can see the states of this country and so on. This application handle the following levels: Country - State - City - District The application is running but there are some itens from this dataset which are currently missing. It´s not difficult to find country or even states boundaries. But cities and districts boundaries I thought would propably hard to find or it will be a country-by-country research. A last note: we can´t re-make the application - which will probably be easier using WMS or Google Maps. thanks for any help -- Eduardo P. [OSGeo-Discuss] GeoWeb 2008 CFP student competition ($$$!)
The deadline for papers for GeoWeb 2008 is March 7th: http://www.geoweb.org/cfp-08.asp Having been involved with this conference for several years, I find it yields a nicely different set of offerings than the usual fare. This year, the focus is very much on GIS infrastructures -- both information and physical infrastrucutres. (And, the venue is great too: Vancouver BC in the summer is glorious...) This year there is also a student competition for best technical contributions, likely with significant cash prizes: http://www.geoweb.org/student_contest.asp As a member of the program committee, I strongly encourage members of the open source community to submit papers, both students and otherwise. I see a good fit for projects that show the value in using and combining OS systems into existing or new infrastructure ecosystems. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Last chance before cancelling: OSGeo Hacking event in a monastry near Bolsena (Italy)!?
Ciao Chris, I heard from aaime about this plan, I actually think it would be pretty nice to spend a few days all together, even though a whole week is probably a bit too much for me. Jeroen, are you sure you cannot hold a bit more? It is not that easy to spare a whole week but it might be nice! Btw, since now developers seem to have become a limitating factor, probably some supporting company could donate some funding to this event. The ROI should be good since in a monastry there would not be much to do besides working :-)! Simone. On Feb 12, 2008 5:50 PM, Chris Holmes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh shoot. Friends of mine take care of the place which is overlooking Lago Bolsena and offers space to 25 people in small bedrooms :-) . Its probably one of the coolest places for such an event. Quiet, isolated and serene. There's a good wireless and wired internet connection, although I wouldn't bet my hand on it if we all start to download satellite images. It should be perfect for SVN, IRC and mail. The cost would be about 200 Euro per person for the week (food not included, we can organize that separately). There's a large kitchen and large dining space. Obviously since the weather most likely permits, we would eat outside overlooking the lake. Have a look yourself, including looking at the photo gallery: http://www.conventobolsena.org/ Where: http://tinyurl.com/2t6zby Are people interested in such a thing? Looking at availability of the place, best would be June or possibly in May (not always available!). If there's enough interest, I can start getting people to sign up and get a booking done. So, does anyone know why Alaska does not look right? I need to be able to work with this file as part of an important job assignment. I am a novice w/ GIS, btw. One more confirmation that develpers are *the* limiting resource in FOSS ecosystems. I have no idea how you reached that conclusion. I would love to spend a week in monastery in Bolsena communing with fellow developers and FOSS enthusiasts... I would be happy to show that I am not a limiting resource if you can come up with approx. USD 2000 or so to make it possible for me. Hard money is more difficult to come by than time, although to some extent they are translatable bi-directionally. Given a choice to use my money to pay my mortgage or attend a conference, I would choose the former. I hope this event becomes a reality, but the distance * critical mass factor is a very important thing to consider in communities that require physical presence. Bypassing this limitation has been the real power of the internet, but it sure is a poor substitute for the real experience of a monastery or Bolsena. Virtual *anything* is just not as good as the real thing, but it makes do in a pinch. pc -- Paolo Cavallini, see: http://www.faunalia.it/pc ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss -- Puneet Kishor http://punkish.eidesis.org/ Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies http://www.nelson.wisc.edu/ Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) http://www.osgeo.org/ ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss
