[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo list of programmers?

2010-07-31 Thread Markus Neteler
Hi all,

I was recently asked by a company which was originally focused on proprietary
software development and gradually opens up to OSGeo related development,
how to deal with the problem of (quickly) finding software developers
specialized
in OSGeo related software.

Their problem is that they are not much familiar with our community style of
development and that they need to sometimes find quick solutions for tight
deadlines.

Perhaps we need something similar to Service Provider Directory at
http://www.osgeo.org/search_profile which is better supporting the many
individuals in our communities in the style of rent an OSGeo programmer?

This could even stimulate the market and contradict the still existing opinion
that FOSS is less supported with contracts and such.

Note: a company, say, from my current home town will unlikely call in India
or US or ... to find an OSGeo programmer. They prefer a person who speaks
Italian and is ideally not too far away for practical reasons. But how to find
such people?

Here OSGeo could help and offer a dedicated list where individuals could
register to showcase their skills. Best seen with direct links to OSGeo SVN
record of course...!

Opinions?

Markus

[OSGeo-Discuss] The depth of FOSS Spatial Data Infrastructure

2010-07-31 Thread Ravi
Some so called SDI experts feel that FOSS SDI cannot perform at-par with
Proprietary SDI.
Please provide examples to fight a case from an Indian state which swears by
Free and Open Source Software. We can never expect a better level playing
field.

Kerala - India

Here are some excerpts from a document that has false claims supporting
Proprietary Software.

However, it is worthwhile to mention here that the OSS (Open Source Software)
does not match the advanced functionalities of many of the commercial
(proprietory) software that is in the market. Image processing and analysis
capabilities of the open source software is not comparable to the commercial
software when one require to carry out advanced data manipulations, image
fusion, 3D modeling, ortho-correction, auto-georeferencing, stereo-image/air
photo interpretation, advanced geospatial analysis etc., In such cases, certain
proprietary software become an integral part of the Spatial Data
Infrastructures, which can not be avoided. At a later stage the some of the
proprietary software need to be purchased.

It is a well known fact that web portal that run with OSS are neither
OGC-compliant nor
interoperable. At the present juncture it is only possible to establish the
KSDI Geoportal
with the available COTS enterprise software.

The detailed PDF document will be emailed on demand.

Markus,

I think the service provider directory is the correct vehicle for this
purpose, and that instead of making something distinct we ought to just
promote amoung the rent an OSGeo programmer crowd more.

Sounds like an excellent document! Email it on and I'll have it neatly
butchered. The web portal claim is remarkable, as are claims of limited
analysis capabilities.
