Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo and Open Data?

2016-10-19 Thread Gert-Jan van der Weijden - Stichting OSGeo.nl
My 3 cents:

1) take another 27 minutes to (re-)enjoy Ton Zijlstra's keynote at FOSS4G.
At that time in the schedule (9 .am, in the morning after the FOSS4G boat trip
probably missed by some of the attendees, but in his talks Ton challenges the
geospatial community in general, and the FOSS4G community in spatial to play an
essential role in leveraging the value of open data to a higher level.
A bit less laid-back than Arnulf's talk, so it requires probably a bit more of
your attention ;-)

2) Apart from that, Tim Berners-Lee 5-star system is an almost essential
ingredient in any talk on open data

3) there's a serious distinction between crowd sourced data such as OSM (which
is collected with no specific goal in mind) and opening data by local and
national governments.
The latter is about data that has been collected for a specific purpose, and is
now, as open data, brought to a broader audience in order to:
a) give the tax-payers insight in data-collections (transparancy of governance,
a merely socio-political goal) and
b) find out if the same data can fulfil another purpose (either within or
outside the government, thus a merely economical goal)

Hope this helps!

Dear all,

Probably the best argument for the strong connection between the 'software
development foundation' we fundamentally are and data is the talk Arnulf gave
at FOSS4G Bonn: Software comes and goes. Mind the Data!
[https://vimeo.com/187556741]. Furthermore, I believe that the affinity between
the philosophy of open source and open data is indisputable.

That being said, I would like to mention a discussion me and Vasile prepared
and facilitated within the workshop 'Open data priorities and engagement —
identifying data sets for publication'

Context: workshop organized within the share PSI 2.0 project: The network for
innovation in European public sector information
[https://www.w3.org/2013/share-psi/].

The name of our session was Free our Maps and the preparation can be found here
[https://www.w3.org/2013/share-psi/wiki/images/b/b5/Abstract_free_our_maps.pdf].

Notes take by Ingo Simonis fron OGC can be found here
[https://www.w3.org/2013/share-psi/workshop/Timisoara/Freemaps]. The issues we
tried to tackle there were identified during the work we did in the
http://geoidea.ro/ project, a project for catalyzing and pushing forward the
open gov geodata initiative in Romania.

Warm regards,
Codrina

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo and Open Data?

2016-10-19 Thread Bruce Bannerman
Several years ago, Cameron Shorter and I responded to an Australian
Government Parliamentary Inquiry into opening up access to public sector
data. (8 years now Cameron...)

This was done on behalf of OSGeo AustNZ. See [1].

There is definitely a role for OSGeo in lobbying for access for open data.

Open data is a big part of what makes this community awesome.

That said OSGeo originally had open data as part of our mandate (with a
committee etc...). This mandate was scaled back last year, to recognize
that OSGeo is now pursuing open data through relationships with other
communities (such as the open layers community).

So to fit in with your theme, OSM / GeoNames / Natural Earth provide the
"open data" and OSGeo provides the "in action".

[OSGeo-Discuss] Where is your organisations’s Open Source Report Card?

2016-10-19 Thread Suchith Anand
I saw this information on Google sharing thier Open Source Report Card,
highlighting thier most popular projects, sharing a few statistics and
detailing some of the projects they have released in 2016.

https://opensource.googleblog.com/2016/10/google-open-source-report-card.html

I thought it is really good idea and it will be good if more organisations
start producing their annual Open Source report cards. So I request all
business and government organisations in the OSGeo ecosystem to produce your
annual open source report card and we will be pleased to publish it in our
Geo4All newsletter.

Economic impact of open source software on innovation and the competitiveness
of the ICT sector in huge as many studies have shown. Open source is not only a
catalyst for business growth, but also a key driver and enabler of future
success for many startups today.

Even properitery GIS vendors are dependent on open source software and
libraries for their delivery so it is important that they acknowledge this and
thank the OSGeo community.

Open source software and open data are the backbone that underpins much of the
service delivery across the public, private and consumer sectors of the world
economy. ? Governments, industry ,start-ups are leveraging open source software
and open data to accelerate innovation in Geospatial. But more importantly Open
Principles are key for true empowerment and sustainability.

http://opensourcegeospatial.icaci.org/2016/07/sharing-is-caring-why-openness-is-key-for-true-empowerment-and-sustainability

Best wishes,

Suchith

Dear Andrew,

tools (e.g. QGIS) could publish or search and consume from DCAT-capable

Please have a look at the PublicaMundi project we completed last year.
http://publicamundi.eu/

We believe that we enhanced the CKAN geospatial capabilities quite a lot
in this project.

Regarding catalog capabilities in QGIS, there is an ongoing discussion
about implementing some new metadata functionality in QGIS core.

Also GeoDCAT-AP support is on the roadmap of pycsw.
