My 3 cents: 1) take another 27 minutes to (re-)enjoy Ton Zijlstra's keynote at FOSS4G. At that time in the schedule (9 .am, in the morning after the FOSS4G boat trip probably missed by some of the attendees, but in his talks Ton challenges the geospatial community in general, and the FOSS4G community in spatial to play an essential role in leveraging the value of open data to a higher level. A bit less laid-back than Arnulf's talk, so it requires probably a bit more of your attention ;-)
2) Apart from that, Tim Berners-Lee 5-star system is an almost essential ingredient in any talk on open data 3) there's a serious distinction between crowd sourced data such as OSM (which is collected with no specific goal in mind) and opening data by local and national governments. The latter is about data that has been collected for a specific purpose, and is now, as open data, brought to a broader audience in order to: a) give the tax-payers insight in data-collections (transparancy of governance, a merely socio-political goal) and b) find out if the same data can fulfil another purpose (either within or outside the government, thus a merely economical goal) Hope this helps!
