[OSGeo-Discuss] Flickr FOSS4G and OSGeo photo history deadline Feb 5th

2019-01-25 Thread Jody Garnett
As covered on discuss a couple months ago, And covered in the board meeting
on Monday:

Our OSGeo, FOSS4G and FOSS4G-NA photos on flicker may be reduced on Feb 5th
as some photos are removed.

Since these photos were shared with our groups we do not really know which
ones will be removed. Photographers are asked to subscribe with a monthly
fee (or have a limit of 1000 photos).

It is not really possible for us as a group to do much, which is a shame
for the internet as Flickr has a wide range of CC images (since they did a
good job of explaining open licenses and making them easily to use.)

Q: Can we throw the images on OSGeo next cloud?

Q: Should we only copy the CC images? Or should we copy everything and try
and reach authors before sharing?

Aside: Many participants missed the CC license step - which is too bad as
it is a good “first time” experience at contributing open content.

Q: Anyone know of an API we could use to grab our images?

Q: Any other Flickr groups we should capture for our history?

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo 101 workshop at FOSS4G 2019

2019-01-25 Thread Cameron Shorter
Hi Jachym, I like the idea of a OSGeo 101 workshop. Ideally it can be
developed into a continuously maintained workshop which can be regularly
presented to new users at global and local FOSS4G type events.

It would be great to align OSGeo 101 with OSGeoLive material. Reasons:

* OSGeoLive has grown with a primary purpose of helping first time users
learn about OSGeo products.

* OSGeoLive has a community behind it which is updating material every
year - making it a sustainable initiative.

* OSGeoLive has a translation pipeline - meaning your material could be
translated into other languages.

* I suspect you'd benefit from using the OSGeoLive distribution as a
platform to present from.

* The OSGeoLive lightning overview,
https://live.osgeo.org/en/presentation.html , could either be
referenced, or incorporated, depending on the focus you take.

* We have also been talking about a related "introduction to OSGeo
projects" workshop, which would aggregate ~ 5 to 10 of the OSGeoLive
Quickstarts. The bonus would be that the material is already created,
and the rigour applied to testing a workshop should improve the quality
of our Quickstarts. It could help Quickstarts align around common use
cases, making them easier to learn.

* What you are mentioning about teaching how to join OSGeo communities
would dovetail well.

While I don't have the bandwidth to play a significant role, I can help
with some periphery tasks - maybe review content for readability or similar.

Warm regards, Cameron

[OSGeo-Discuss] GSoC 2019 - Call for mentors and ideas

2019-01-25 Thread Helmut Kudrnovsky
Dear OSGeo community,

It is time for *GSoC* [1] this year, so this is our starting information to get
involved!

If you are willing to act as a mentor [2], fill in this form:

If you want to participate proposing ideas, you just need
to send us (admins: ) the URL for your project's
ideas page.

Remember that every idea should indicate:

• A title
• A description
• 2 mentors
• A test for the students to submit to your evaluation. The test aims at
evaluating if the student is capable for the project, so please design the test
having in mind the skills required to complete the project.

Time is short, we need to collect all URLs by Feb 4. Here the timeline [3].

Thanks and please forward to your project community.

I have a presentation on just that subject from FOSS4G and foss4gna. Each
part of OSGeo is different so it would be a good workshop.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Interest in open source Graph Tracing Tool

2019-01-25 Thread Frank Maes
Hi,

This is an inquiry regarding the interest in an open source Graph Tracing
Tool.

The Flemish Environmental Agency (VMM) has invested in an improved graph
tracing tool. The tool is build on top of the JGraphT [1] library and
offers the following features:

   - Ability to trace paths on a topological network (graph)
   - Capable to detect and handle loops in the network
   - Supports creation of a single graph/network from multiple data sets -
seaming between multiple datasets can be logical (via linked keys) or
   spatial
   - Supports aggregation of diverse properties along the path (e.g. total
dirt load for a path in a sewer system)
   - Generic via configuration - supports any form/structure of dataset as
long as it represents a valid graph. Specific configurations can be adapted
   using generic config files.
   - REST interface to access the tracing engine and retrieve results (can
   be used in web context)
   - Tracing result is a graph representation in JSON

In VMM this tool is being used to calculate for a given point the upstream
or downstream path in a network of sewer lines, rivers and canals.

In terms of user interaction and required skills the tool can be best
compared with tools like Geoserver (without the extended GUI). This means
that it is a standalone software packaged as a war or docker image. After
installation, a user with decent understanding of spatial data, graphs and
basic computer skills can independently configure the application to
generate the graph/network and perform graph analysis. No programming or
advanced sys admin knowledge is required.

VMM now considers to release the tracing tool as an open source tool and
therefor seeks feedback and information regarding this idea.

Is there an appetite in the OSGeo community for such a tool?

Would you or your organisation be interested in using such a tracing tool?

Are there any suggestions, ideas, tips regarding this?

Are you aware of any open source initiatives or tools that can offer
synergies with this tracing tool?

Really looking forward to hear back from you.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Frank
