Hello Bob, you also could add an event to https://www.osgeo.org/events/ You need editor rights to do that. So if you would like to go this way please ask Vicky or me for the rights. The organizing of FOSS4G 2023 was a next level activity for our organization in Kosovo. It was of a high importance, for both the local reach regarding FOSS and Geospatial software, also for the global impact that the conference has. In advance Besfort Guri, the Conference Chair, for many years has been trying trying to explain the importance and and the spirit of the OSGeo family / community, but without “touching” and being part of it, it was harder to understand and resonate with. We are sure that the local team and the volunteers are still living with the energy of FOSS4G and are willing to contribute and be active in the global community. Because of missing a big hall for hosting +700 participants at the same time, we created an outdoor stage and we also needed to find a solution for the Gala Dinner. The outdoor stage was a great success and was used for keynotes, talks, the Gala Dinner and an amazing concert. We tried to do our best and from the feedback that we received it was quiet good. Another thing that was new in Prizren. We discovered that our community is multi-talented and enjoys Karaoke. So we had great parties. Also the 24-hours bar was special and needed as we were active day and night. Valmir Mustafa the Project Manager of FLOSSK wrote in a letter to the OSGeo board “We would also like to thank the OSGeo Community for this valuable opportunity to host FOSS4G in Kosovo. Your support has been instrumental in empowering FLOSSK to strengthen its team and further promote and advocate for open-source GIS in Kosovo. This journey wouldn’t have been possible without your help. [OSGeo-Discuss] Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software - Call for Nominations 2023
see news Item: https://www.osgeo.org/foundation-news/sol-katz-award-for-geospatial-free-and-open-source-software-call-for-nominations-2023/ 8 May 2023 The Open Source Geospatial Foundation would like to open nominations for the 2023 Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software. The Sol Katz Award for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) will be given to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the FOSS4G community. Recipients of the award will have contributed significantly through their activities to advance open source ideals in the geospatial realm. Sol Katz was an early pioneer of FOSS4G and left behind a large body of work in the form of applications, format specifications, and utilities while at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. This early FOSS4G archive provided both source code and applications freely available to the community. Sol was also a frequent contributor to many geospatial list servers, providing much guidance to the geospatial community at large. Sol unfortunately passed away in 1999 from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, but his legacy lives on in the open source world. Those interested in making a donation to the American Cancer Society, as per Sol's family's request, can do so at https://donate.cancer.org . Nominations for the Sol Katz Award should be sent to solkatzaward at lists dot osgeo dot org with a description of the reasons for this nomination (after sending, please wait for the moderator to accept your message). Nominations will be accepted until end-of-day May 26th Anywhere on Earth. A recipient will be decided from the nomination list by the OSGeo selection committee. The winner of the Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software will be announced virtually during the FOSS4G 2023 event in Prizren, Kosovo. The hope is that the award will both acknowledge the work of community members, and pay tribute to one of its founders, for years to come. The hope is that the award will both acknowledge the work of community members, and pay tribute to one of its founders, for years to come. Solomon Stuart Katz aka Sol 1947-1999 Background Sol Katz was born in Sweden (on August 3rd, 1947) and moved to NY at the age of 1. Yiddish was his first language, but he was amazingly bright, and learned both Hebrew and English quickly. After high school, he spent three years in the US Air Force, stationed in Germany, where he picked up yet another language. Following his brief military career, he decided to go to Brooklyn College in NY where he got his Bachelors in Geology in 2.5 years. He then married his wife Hedy in 1969, and went back to Brooklyn College while teaching in NY Public Schools and got his MA, also in Geology. After several years working for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in several states, he settled down in Lakewood, CO and decided to go back to school at the University of Denver in Computer Science and earned a second masters. At this time, he also had two children - Shanna and Risa. He was well loved in his office, at his children's school, and at home. Always full of laughter and good humor, Sol could easily be recognized by his flamboyant Hawaiian shirts and toucan or propeller hats. Sadly, after fighting Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma for almost a decade, Sol died April 23, 1999 in bed. Open Source - Sol Katz was an early pioneer of GFOSS and left behind a large body of work in the form of applications, format specifications, and utilities. See News Item 2022-09-19: https://www.osgeo.org/foundation-news/sandro-santilli-receives-the-2022-sol-katz-award/ (sorry for the late announcement) We are honoured to announce that Sandro Santilli is the recipient of the Sol Katz Award 2022. Sandro Santilli was honoured with the 2022 Sol Katz Award, presented on 26 August 2022 at FOSS4G 2022 in Firenze, Italy. This was the 18th year of the award. Sandro (aka strk) has been contributing to OSGeo and open source geospatial software for over 20 years in various ways. He is the chair of the GEOS steering committee, a long term core contributor to PostGIS and QGIS, and a mentor to many. Sandro also shapes and maintains OSGeo infrastructure as a volunteer on the OSGeo systems administration committee. He is seen as a mentor and guide by his peers, always reminding us to look beyond the idea of software for free, and toward truly empowering the geospaital community through open source software: “He is the nagging voice that reminds you that FOSS is about freedom to choose and putting the power of change in the users hands, and the dangers of settling for freeware instead of working toward a truly free alternative.” – Regina Obe Sandro also reminds us that open software and the OSGeo community is built, and maintained, by people who contribute to it: “I don’t care if you use Free Software. I care if you contribute to Free Software!” -Sandro Santilli, 2022 Sol Katz Award acceptance speech. About the award -- The Sol Katz Award for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) is awarded annually by OSGeo to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the FOSS4G community. Recipients of the award have contributed significantly through their activities to advance open source ideals in the geospatial realm. The award acknowledges both the work of community members, and pay tribute to one of its founders, for years to come. https://www.osgeo.org/community/awards/ On behalf of the OSGeo communities we congratulate and thank Sandro for his all his contributions. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [OSGeo-Conf] Conference resources working group
Hello Luca, hello all, thanks Luca for the idea. I support it strongly. We have such a structure for the FOSSGIS conference too and it helps a lot. I added my name to the page and I am happy to support FOSS4Gs. See you Astrid Am 29.08.2022 07:33 schrieb Luca Delucchi: Dear Conference committee, OSGeo friends; working on the FOSS4G and SotM 2022 organization I was able to see two different types of organization for the two conferences. I really like the idea of having a working group helping the LOC team that OSM foundation has, this helps a lot to simplify the work of LOC. So in these days I spoke with some people about my idea to create a working group in helping the different LOCs to have a successful FOSS4G (mainly the international one but it could also be done with regional if needed, for example setting up or helping with pretalx). Most of the people I spoke with really liked the idea so I added it to the board meeting and all the members supported the idea. I already found some people interested in being part of this working group. This new group is not a replacement of the Conference Committee because they have two different purposes: - the Conference Committee has to put out the bid and choose the best candidate - the Conference resources (final name has to be decided but this is a good proposal of Michael) has to help the chosen candidate to set up a good FOSS4G and simplify the work and it is a operative entity I started a wiki page [0] and I'll be working on that in the next weeks, if you are interested to be part of and support this working group please add your name. I would like to have the first meeting by the end of September, after having a call with FOSS4G 2023 team. About INSPIRE - The INSPIRE Directive aims to create a European Union spatial data infrastructure for the purposes of EU environmental policies and policies or activities which may have an impact on the environment. For more information see https://inspire.ec.europa.eu/about-inspire/563 INSPIRE CONFERENCE 2021 - The slogan of the events was “Towards a Common European Green Deal data space for environment and sustainability” OSGeo was invited to join the conference. Codrina Ilie contributed to the panel regarding the modernising INSPIRE within the European Green Deal data space, from a technological and organisational perspective. After a brief introduction to OSGeo, she emphasized on the long-standing collaborations over the years between the INSPIRE and the OSGeo communities. A close look at the solutions available for INSPIRE implementations from the very beginning - be it discovery, download or viewing services, metadata etc. - one easily identifies OSGeo projects.
[OSGeo-Discuss] Malena Libman receives the 2021 Sol Katz Award
News item 2021-10-04 https://www.osgeo.org/foundation-news/malena-libman-receives-the-2021-sol-katz-award/ Malena Libman is the Sol Katz Award winner 2021. The prize was presented at the FOSS4G closing session and handed over to her friends & family who accepted the award on her behalf since we sadly lost Malena in April 2021 to COVID-19. It’s a time-honored OSGeo tradition to present the annual Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in our community. This year, the award ceremony was part of the online FOSS4G2021 conference and was presented by last years’ recipients Anita Graser and Even Rouault. The call for nominations is open to the whole OSGeo community and many great candidates are nominated every year. (Thank-you to everyone who submitted a nomination!) The winner is determined by the Award Selection Committee made up by former recipients of the award. The nomination presented for Malena (Nomination Malena Libman https://wiki.osgeo.org/w/images/b/b0/Sol-Katz-2021-Malena-Libman-nomination.pdf) stood out on more levels than just one. It was signed by 147 members of the OSGeo community. The final voting of the past awardees who represent the selection committee showed overwhelming support for Malena Libman. Malena Libman was the President of OSGeo Argentina Local Chapter’s NGO Geolibres, Chair of FOSS4G + SOTM 2017 Argentina. She was an SDI specialist involved in the National SDI working towards building better FLOSS solutions. She inspired so many of our community. Some quotes from the nominations should show the great role of Malena Libman. “We believe that the Sol Katz Award is the recognition that Malena deserved, for her trajectory and for her incomparable spirit dedicated to the OSGeo community; sadly we lost her suddenly in April to COVID-19, may her soul rest in peace.” “This request seeks to honor, not only the memory of Male, but also all of her efforts that she made during her lifetime to expand the geo community in Argentina, Latin America and worldwide.” […] […] “She was a reference for many people, especially women in the Geomatics and OpenStreetMap communities, and she will always be remembered as a great teacher, companion and above all, a wonderful friend.” Malena’s dream was FOSS4G 2021 “Through this award, we want to thank and acknowledge her efforts, her always constructive leadership as chairwoman of the FOSS4G 2021 (Buenos Aires), her compassion, and at the same time share all the learning and knowledge that she imparted in life to all communities.” “Among her great achievements is her research work on Spatial Data Infrastructure (IDE) designed by the Spatial Data Infrastructure of the Argentine Republic (IDERA), as well as the cartographic editing automation project for the Institute of Geography of Argentina.” Malena’s friends Andrea Trovant, Ariel Anthieni and Horacio Castellaro joined the award ceremony and took the award on behalf of Malena. Andrea assigned some words to remember Malena. “It’s an honour for me to receive this award on behalf of Malena. We were not only colleagues, we were friends too. Honestly, it’s difficult to talk about her, (that’s why I prepared a text, in case Male wins the award)… I am grateful that the FOSS4G team and her family are present today, listening and supporting such a special moment, on the other side of the screen. Malena’s arriving to the geospatial world was only by chance, in 2011, as part of her long search for his vocation … She was always curious about the world around her!! Then, she began her studies in Geographic Information Systems at the General Sarmiento University in Buenos Aires, becoming the first graduate of the career. In those years, Male participated in a volunteer service and presented his project at the National Cartography Congress. During the event, she met the “Geoinquiet@s”, the GeoGeeks, from the local communities. From this days, her career was on the rise, and we were the privileged ones to be able to see its growth up close. Her work experience was infinite, she worked at the Argentina Center for Cartography, in the National Educational Map Program, in different municipalities of the state. She worked for almost 3 years at the National Geographic Institute of Argentina, while she focused in Spatial Data Infrastructure. Malena gave GIS and SDI workshops for different institutions, she was part of Geochicas OSM and more and more things.. I could talk about her for a whole day.. At every step she took, she was always promoting free and open source software and the strengthening of the geospatial communities. No more, no less… She was part of the organization of FOSS4G 2016, FOSS4G 2017, FOSS4G 2019. She travelled to represent us at the global FOSS4G 2018 in Dar Es Salaam, and Bucharest too, but apart from all this, I know how much she deserves to win this award.

The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team United States, Inc. (HOT), applies the principles of open source and open data sharing for humanitarian response and economic development. Founded in the wake of the Haiti earthquake of 2010, responders and organizations recognized the need for accurate, accessible maps to aid in humanitarian response and the potential for international development interventions. Since then, HOT has utilized its network of tens of thousands of volunteers to contribute to OpenStreetMap, the free and editable map of the world. HOT’s network and tools enable everyone, local or international, to have an impact by putting places and areas home to people on the map. The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support and promote the collaborative development of open source geospatial software, data and education. The foundation provides financial, organizational and legal support to the broader open source geospatial community. It also serves as an independent legal entity to which community members can contribute code, funding and other resources, secure in the knowledge that their contributions will be maintained for public benefit. OSGeo also serves as an outreach and advocacy organization for the open source geospatial community, and provides a common forum and shared infrastructure for improving cross-project collaboration. The foundation's projects are all freely available at https://osgeo.org and usable under an OSI-certified open source license. Together the organizations have agreed to find synergistic ways to promote common goals. Starting in 2021, HOT and OSGeo will work together to contribute to the following shared objectives: A. OSGeo to communicate about HOT's tools on OSGeoLive (https://live.osgeo.org) B. HOT and OSGeo to promote development of open geospatial communities (e.g. OSGeo chapters and OSM community groups) in HOT priority countries (list of 94 countries). This should include connecting OSGeo local chapters with Open Mapping Hubs supported by HOT in Asia Pacific, Eastern & Southern Africa (ESA), West Africa, and Latin America & the Caribbean, with the goal of facilitating delivery of training and funding (Microgrants) where relevant to OSGeo local chapters. C. HOT to promote use of open source geospatial tools (such as GeoNode and QGIS) in HOT projects and with the humanitarian mapping community D. HOT and OSGeo to show visibility of partners on both sides during events E. 2021-08-20 News item: https://www.osgeo.org/foundation-news/osgeo-community-program-welcomes-the-proj-jni-project/ The PROJ-JNI project has been accepted into the OSGeo Community program. The Open Source Geospatial Foundation is pleased to welcome PROJ-JNI [1] to our Community program. PROJ-JNI is a project that exposes Java Native Interface bindings to the PROJ [2] C/C++ library. The OSGeo Community program recognizes applications and tools that are geospatial, freely available with an open source license, and are setup to collaborate fairly. This program helps OSGeo promote innovation and the hard work of teams and organizations worldwide. About PROJ-JNI -- PROJ-JNI is a project that exposes Java Native Interface bindings to the PROJ C/C++ library, the well-known and widely-used coordinate transformation library that underpins most open-source geospatial coordinate transformations. This project allows JVM ecosystem developers to build directly upon recent and future improvements to PROJ via native bindings, rather than requiring that libraries separately re-implement all projection and transformation functionality in JVM languages. PROJ-JNI currently works with system-installed versions of PROJ, and is currently looking into the feasibility of simplifying the end-user experience via pre-compiled native libraries for different platforms. Source code is hosted on GitHub [3], which also contains documentation, installation, and information about contributing. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] GSoC 2021 - Instructions for Packaging your Work and Final Submission Guidelines
Good luck and all the best to all GSoC 2021 students for the countdown! We are looking forward to the results. Astrid Emde -- Astrid Emde OSGeo Board Member and OSGeo Secretary Open Source Geospatial Foundation https://www.osgeo.org/member/astrid-emde/ astrid_e...@osgeo.org Am 10.08.2021 16:11 schrieb Rahul Chauhan via Discuss: Dear GSoC students, The final evaluation and code submission deadline is approaching. As official GSoC 2021 timeline mentions [1]: Students submit their final work product and their final mentor evaluation: AUGUST 16 - 23 18:00 UTC. We hope that you enjoyed coding with OSGeo, and we are sure that you learned a lot from your mentors and the vibrant OSGeo community. We appreciate your efforts for standing strong during the global tough time and justifying, as they say - _"when the going gets tough, the tough get going". _We are sure that you all must have your great stories associated with GSoC 2021. The final step is wrapping up and packaging your project for final submission. According to Google [2], the basic requirements for code submissions are: * It must be easy to identify the work you have done. (i.e. the changes you made or new code.) When someone goes to the provided URL it should be clear what work you did without requiring them to do significant additional digging. * It should be in a stable location. The URL cannot be changed after submission. * Someone else should be able to use the content at (or referenced from) the target of the link to extend your work. If your work is 100% complete, they should be able to use it. If your work is not 100% complete, it should be clear what's left to do. You are also required to submit your final report to the SOC mailing list. Your final report must include: 1- The title of the project and the software community it belongs to (for hybrid projects indicate all the software involved); NOTE: If your title has changed over the due course of project, then do not forget to update it to the Dashboard and put the final updated title in the report; 2- Abstract: a description of the general idea, motivation, challenges, etc.; 3- The state of the art BEFORE your GSoC. For example, if you made a GUI, you can say: "In the software XYZ, when I wanted to use the tool xxx, I had to manually edit the file yyy"; 4- The addition (added value) that your project brought to the software. In the same example: "With the GUI that I created, now it is possible to use the tool xxx via graphical user interface"; 5- If there is still work to be done on the project, include that too. You can also share highlights or challenging pieces. 6- Add all the permanent links to access the code and documentation for the user to get started with testing your application. "Please test my code following instructions here". (Don’t forget to test that the links are working and do not require special access permissions!) Ensure that the pull request description is detailed. If the pull request is going to have more work done after GSoC is over, make sure the last GSoC commit is noted. 7- At least, add a graphical image that should serve to show the main elements of your project. It could be a flow chart, a screenshot, both, or whatever you think could serve for the scope. REMEMBER: the aim is to showcase your project to people that are not necessarily familiar with the software. The image must be uploaded on a public repository or in the web page / wiki of your project and the link shall be included in your report. 8- Optional: You can add links to videos, blog posts etc. that you have created. (We warmly encourage it. It feels highly elated to see your work or read a blog post in future.) The report must be included as text inside your email (not as a separate attached document, not as a link to an external document). Also, remember to add the link to your project wiki page and add the final report in your wiki. In order to comply with Google’s requirement of A REPORT IN A STABLE LOCATION (THE URL CANNOT BE CHANGED AFTER SUBMISSION), you can either check with your mentors for a suitable URL or submit the URL of your final report. You can find the URL of your final report mail in the SoC Archives (https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/soc/ [1]) and then use this permanent link to your final report mail in your GSoC final submission in your dashboard. You must submit your final evaluations (with the submission URL) before AUGUST 23 18:00 UTC. Do not wait until the last minute on August 23. Once you submit your final evaluation, you cannot change it or the final report URL. That URL is what will be public on the GSoC archive site so you should want it to be representative of the work you did this summer. Please reach out proactively to your mentors and to this mailing list in case of any further queries. All the best! Kind re
[OSGeo-Discuss] Join the FOSS4G 2021 Community Sprint on Saturday October 2nd, 2021 - please register
See News Item https://www.osgeo.org/foundation-news/foss4g-2021-community-sprint/ The FOSS4G 2021 Community Sprint [1] will be right after the global FOSS4G 2021 conference [2] and has the aim to bring people together to discuss and improve OSGeo projects. It will take place online on Saturday October 2nd, 2021, using WorkAdventu.re [3] plus a bounce of Jitsi channels for each project. The Community Sprint offers an excellent opportunity to meet other OSGeo members and get involved in OSGeo projects! It is a golden opportunity for developers and non-developers to meet with the core team of those projects, get a deeper insight into the software and participate in development, testing or documentation. We follow this tradition since 2009. Since we need to create the Workadventu.re environment, we ask all projects to register on the wiki page by July 15th. Projects that have registered on time will have their own Workadventu.re environment, those that register later will only have a Jitsi channel reported on the community sprint wiki page. The OSGeo Code Sprint is open to all who wish to participate in one or more projects. WorkAdventu.re environment is open only to people registered to FOSS4G 2021 whereas the Jitsi channels are open to everyone. There is always plenty to do – it’s not all about programming; translation, documentation, feedback, discussions, testing – all this is also important for projects, so everyone is cordially invited to attend the community sprint! The Organizing Team is looking forward to your coming! Please register soon [1] See you at FOSS4G 2021! [OSGeo-Discuss] Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software - Call for Nominations 2021
News item: https://www.osgeo.org/foundation-news/sol-katz-award-for-geospatial-free-and-open-source-software-call-for-nominations-2021/ 2021-04-26 The Open Source Geospatial Foundation would like to open nominations for the 2021 Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software. Sol unfortunately passed away in 1999 from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, but his legacy lives on in the open source world. Those interested in making a donation to the American Cancer Society, as per Sol’s family’s request, can do so at https://donate.cancer.org . Nominations for the Sol Katz Award should be sent to solkatzaw...@osgeo.org with a description of the reasons for this nomination. Nominations will be accepted until end-of-day August 20th Anywhere on Earth. A recipient will be decided from the nomination list by the OSGeo selection committee. The winner of the Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software will be announced virtually during the FOSS4G 2021 event in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The hope is that the award will both acknowledge the work of community members, and pay tribute to one of its founders, for years to come. See News Item 2020-09-10: https://www.osgeo.org/foundation-news/anita-graser-receives-the-2020-sol-katz-award/ Anita Graser was honoured with the 2020 Sol Katz Award, presented on 10. September 2020, during the virtual OSGeo Annual General Meeting. This was the 16th year of the award. We are honoured to announce that Anita Graser is the recipient of the Sol Katz Award 2020. Anita Graser is a spatial data scientist and an open source GIS advocate. She is doing mobility research. She is encouraging people to get involved through social media, blog posts, presentations, podcasts & courses at university. Anita has served on the OSGeo board of directors. She best known for being involved in QGIS which is one of the most successful OSGeo projects. Anita has served in the QGIS steering commitee since 2013 and authored not less than 7 books on it! Anita also developed the QGIS Time Manager plugin. She lives in Austria and is well known on social media as underdarkGIS. On behalf of the OSGeo communities we congratulate and thank Anita Graser for all of her contributions. Thank you Anita, you deserve this. You can watch the Sol Katz Award Ceremony here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TydDbCa00I#t=2h48m15s Read more about Anita Graser in her blog https://anitagraser.com/about/ About the award --- The Sol Katz Award for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) is awarded annually by OSGeo to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the FOSS4G community. Recipients of the award have contributed significantly through their activities to advance open source ideals in the geospatial realm. The award acknowledges both the work of community members, and pay tribute to one of its founders, for years to come. https://www.osgeo.org/community/awards/ Anita Graser’s speech after receiving the Sol Katz Award - “As people working in open source projects, we are constantly reminded that we are all standing on the shoulders of giants. However, particularly this year, we also see just how important small personal connections are. For me, my involvement with open source communities really took off when I joined the QGIS hackfest in Vienna in 2009 and I felt that my participation was really appreciated and welcome. I couldn’t imagine being without these connections anymore. Thank you to the whole QGIS community, particularly my fellow PSC members both current and former: Tim, Andreas, Jürgen, Richard, Paolo, Otto, Marco Hugentobler, Alessandro, our new chair Marco Bernasocchi, and of course QGIS founder Gary Sherman for starting this awesome project and for still being around and actively promoting geospatial open source by publishing so many great books covering multiple different OSGeo projects. I’d also like to thank my partner and my family for being incredibly understanding whenever I’m spend my time geeking out over a new programming project, data analysis, forum question, or conference talk. Thank you also to my friends, colleagues and fellow members of the larger OSGeo community for sharing ideas, providing valuable feedback, and spreading the word about all the great work that’s going on all around us. I’m constantly amazed by all the innovation happening to nourish and grow our community. And I’m looking forward to continue being a part of these efforts. Thank you! “ ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hello Victoria and the whole OSGeo GCI team, thanks a lot for sharing this information. Sad to hear that there will be not GCI in the future. Thanks a lot to the OSGeo GCI Admins team and all mentors, people and projects involved in GCI. Thank you! Regards OSGeo GCI Admins team -- Forwarded message - From: 'Stephanie Taylor' via Google Code-in Mentors Date: Wed, Jun 10, 2020 at 6:55 PM Subject: [GCI-mentors] Thank you all for 10 incredible years of Google Code-in Hi GCI Mentors and Org Admins, Google Code-in concluded 10 amazing, productive, exhilarating years in January. This program has been a success because of the amazing energy and passion all of you have exhibited; volunteering dozens, hundreds, and in some cases, thousands(!) of hours to help 14,700+ teenagers, from 115+ countries, complete a whopping 76,200+ open source tasks, during the past 10 years! We wanted all of you to be among the first to know that Google Code-in 2019 was our final Google Code-in contest. We've been looking hard at our portfolio of programs and as open source evolves, our programs need to evolve too. We've decided to focus our efforts on Google Summer of Code and programs like Season of Docs that meet projects' sustainability needs going into the next 10 years of open source. We want to thank you all for being inspiring role models to these students. Many of you were GCI or GSoC students yourselves and have been paying it forward for years by helping teenagers discover their passion for open source software development. The extent of your support was something many didn’t expect when they first started out trying to complete a few tasks to earn a Google T-shirt. You have welcomed students into your communities and shown them how open source is making the world a better place and how they can be a part of that. You all have inspired, taught, listened, and made a difference in the lives of thousands of students. THANK YOU! These students have brought fresh new perspectives and ideas into your communities, inspiring long-term committers with their enthusiasm, curiosity and skills. Many of you have been mentors for all 10 years of GCI (plus GHOP!), while others came into the GCI family just this past year. Regardless of when you joined, thank you all for showing immense kindness, patience, dedication, organization and guidance to the students, the other mentors in our GCI community, and to me and the rest of our team over the years. These past 10 years of Google Code-in have been an exciting, adrenaline pumping adventure – thanks for coming along on the ride with us! We will continue to be dedicated to helping open source communities be sustainable and finding new contributors is an essential part of those efforts. While Google Code-in is now officially retired, we look forward to finding new ways to support your communities. [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeoLive Press release 90:OSGeoLive 13.1 Released (Docs only point release)
See also OSGeoLive https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeolive/wiki/Press%20Release%2090 7 April 2020 OSGeoLive 13.1 Released - Docs only point release Are you wondering what OSGeo docs would look like if they were written by senior technical writer? Then check out the latest OSGeoLive Quickstarts [0]. All English Quickstarts have been reviewed and improved by Felicity Brand as part of Google Season of Docs [1]. We've published them in a docs only point release of OSGeoLive, version 13.1. (We've also re-introduced our presentation, thanks to bug fixes from Seth.) What else happened with OSGeo's Google Season of Docs? * OSGeo doesn't have a definitive glossary of terms, so we've started aggregating glossaries, which led to a bunch of OSGeo folks kicking off a GeoLexicon [2] project. * There was no definitive open source doc templates, so we've created them in TheGoodDocsProject [3]. * Another tech writer was allocated to GeoNework. * We reviewed QGIS's doc challenges [4] - and found a bunch of lessons which will likely be valuable for other projects too. For more details, check out Felicity's report [5]. Successful results from the Google Season of Docs program The OSGeo Foundation was lucky enough to be allocated two technical writers from the The OSGeoLive team submitted projects for consideration in the 2019 Google Season of Docs program. [1] A successful match with technical writer, Felicity Brand, resulted in a concerted effort to improve the quickstarts for the applications on the OSGeoLive distribution. Felicity worked with the OSGeoLive team to review our quickstart template and implement changes to the documentation to ensure accuracy and consistency. [OSGeo-Discuss] Press release 89: OSGeoLive archive is online!
OSGeoLive archive is online! The OSGeoLive team has published an archive of all prior OSGeoLive docs, both online [1], and backed up in source control [2]. The archive provides an important historical record of geospatial development over the last decade. It contains all OSGeoLive documentation from 2.0 to the latest 13.0 version. The search continues for the 1.0 release! From memory, it didn't contain any docs. You are invited to travel into history to the beginning Version 2.0 [4] when OSGeoLive was called the "Arramagong Live DVD" and only contained 18 projects including GRASS GIS, Quantum QGIS, PostGIS, MapServer? and GeoServer?. A DVD was enthusiastically received by FOSS4G 2009 conference attendees in Sydney, Australia. Interesting facts Major version releases have aligned with the international conference for Free and Open Source Software (FOSS4G). In many years we also put out a minor release, to align with FOSS4G regional and local events. It is handed out at FOSS4G events and is used in many of the FOSS4G workshops. The theme of desktop backgrounds of major versions has been inspired by the location of the international FOSS4G conference, adopting a backdrop of the African savanna in Del es Salaam, and embracing the persona of Robin Hood in Nottingham. Why did we jump from 7.0 to 7.9 (instead of following convention and selecting 7.5)? It was to honour one of OSGeo's heros, Arnulf Christl, who also goes by the nickname of "seven-of-nine". OSGeoLive is very popular. Version 12.0 had 21,000 downloads and the latest version 13.0 has had 11,000 downloads 13.0 in the last 7 months. Source: [5] When packaging, we prioritise stability over cutting edge, quality over quantity, and end user experience over individual project needs. Software which has lost an active community have been retired and new projects added. Surprisingly, the number of projects on OSGeoLive has remained relatively static - hovering around 40 to 50. Seth Girvin came up with the idea of the archive and worked on it in 2019. It was a challenge to find older versions. Thanks a lot to Seth for the initiative. Thanks also to Cameron Shorter for the support, Angelos Tzozos for setting up the repo and Regina Obe from SAC for setting up the subdomain. I hope you enjoy the journey into the archive! See OSGeo Foundation News: https://www.osgeo.org/foundation-news/new-osgeo-president-and-executive-positions-were-named-by-osgeo-board-of-directors-2019-12-30/ Dear OSGeo Community, at the last board meeting the new elected OSGeo Board 2019 appointed the Executive Positions for OSGeo. At our last board meeting (2019-12-30) the new elected OSGeo Board appointed the Executive Positions for OSGeo. We had a very productive discussion and appointed the positions with full consensus. The OSGeo Board is pleased to announce the following executive positions [1] Executive President: Angelos Tzotsos Vice-President: Vicky Vergara Vice-President: Helena Mitasova Vice-President: Victoria Rautenbach Vice-President: Codrina Maria Ilie Treasurer: Michael Smith Secretary: Astrid Emde Board Chair: Till Adams We are pleased to welcome the new OSGeo President Angelos Tzotsos. Angelos is well known in the community and active in many projects. He is part of the OSGeo Board since 2016 and he served as OSGeo Vice-President since 2018. His leadership will be an asset going forward with OSGeo. We decided to accompany the OSGeo President with four Vice-Presidents to share all the commitments an OSGeo President has to satisfy and represent OSGeo at events all over the world; we therefore also welcome Helena Mitasova, Vicky Vergara, Victoria Rautenbach and Codrina Maria Ilie as Vice-Presidents of OSGeo. The Board would like to thank Michael Smith for again volunteering for the role of OSGeo treasurer for another year and continuing to help OSGeo with financial matters. The Board would also like to thank Astrid Emde for again volunteering for the role of OSGeo Secretary. Till Adams volunteered to act as Chair of the Board. This is a non-executive position helping the board follow up on decisions, schedule meetings and keeping the board on track. Please read the OSGeo bylaws to find out more about the Executive Positions [2] We would like to take the opportunity to thank the past members of the OSGeo Board who all have contributed their time and efforts to help build up this amazing community. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] My last letter as President
Hello Maria, thanks a lot for beeing our president for the last two years. You did a great job and represented our community very well. It was a great pleasure to work with you on the board. I liked the discussions, your energy, your inspiring ideas and all the cats. I am looking forward to another 2 years in the board and hope we will follow the spirit. All the best and see you Astrid Am 04.12.2019 08:08 schrieb María Arias de Reyna: Dear fellow OSGeoers, I want to congratulate all the recently elected members of the Board, specially the new ones! I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I did and contribute with your unique view to our organization. I want to thank all the people that helped me on this two-year journey and I hope I helped others on this journey too. OSGeo is evolving to be more inclusive, diverse and bigger than ever and I am proud of you all. As some of you may know, some months ago I decided to go back into the barricades and far from public exposure. I think rotating positions inside a voluntary organization is something very healthy to do and gives you a unique perspective. That's why I decided to participate on a proposal for FOSS4G 2021 and not repeat elections again for the Board. I hereby resign as President to let one of the current members of the Board take this position. I have always a strong advocate that this kind of positions should be taken by Board members, so I want to explicitly facilitate the transition. Our current vice-presidents Helena Mitasova and Angelos Tzotsos will fill the space until a new President is appointed. I have to say I'm still a bit sad of the geographic, cultural and ethnic representation on the Board. I am sure we can change this on the following years. Until then, I am confident current members of the Board will do a great job representing you all. See you all in Calgary in 2020! [OSGeo-Discuss] Even Rouault receives the 2019 Sol Katz Award
Even Rouault was honoured with the 2019 Sol Katz Award, presented on 29 August 2019, during the closing session of the FOSS4G event in Bucharest. This was the 15th year of the award. Even took over the title of "Mister GDAL" after Frank Warmerdam passed him the torch. GDAL is a cornerstone of many GIS software both open source and proprietary. He is an active contributor to GDAL, MapServer, PROJ, libgeotiff, GEOS, QGIS and many other projects. Even is a highly productive OSGeo contributor. Sol Katz is not about numbers, but Evens stats are quite impressive: over the last 5 years, he has over 10,000 commits to multiple OSGeo projects. (Ref: From 2014 to 2019: 10,900 commits to GDAL, 300 in MapServer, 400 in QGIS, not counting his recent refactoring of PROJ6, and his contributions to other OSGeo projects) Even is a brilliant developer and also a really nice person. He cares about OSGeo as an organization, about the goals and the way OSGeo runs its activities. On behalf of the OSGeo communities we congratulate and thank Even for all of his contributions. See Video from FOSS4G 2019 https://media.ccc.de/v/bucharest-481-awards-ceremony#t=1190 Thank you Even, you deserve this. [OSGeo-Discuss] Call for Nominations for the 2019 Sol Katz Award
The Open Source Geospatial Foundation would like to open nominations for the 2019 Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software. (you can find more info on the Sol Katz Award wiki page https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Sol_Katz_Award) The Sol Katz Award for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) will be given to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the FOSS4G community. Those interested in making a donation to the American Cancer Society, as per Sol's family's request, can do so at https://donate.cancer.org/index. Nominations for the Sol Katz Award should be sent to solkatzaw...@osgeo.org with a description of the reasons for this nomination. Nominations will be accepted until end-of-day August 8th Anywhere on Earth (https://www.timeanddate.com/time/zones/aoe). A recipient will be decided from the nomination list by the OSGeo selection committee. The winner of the Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software will be announced at the FOSS4G 2019 event in August, in Bucharest, Romania. The hope is that the award will both acknowledge the work of community members, and pay tribute to one of its founders, for years to come. It should be noted that past awardees and selection committee members are not eligible. Past Awardees: 2018: Astrid Emde 2017: Andrea Aime 2016: Jeff McKenna 2015: Maria Brovelli 2014: Gary Sherman 2013: Arnulf Christl 2012: Venkatesh Raghavan 2011: Martin Davis 2010: Helena Mitasova 2009: Daniel Morissette 2008: Paul Ramsey 2007: Steve Lime 2006: Markus Neteler 2005: Frank Warmerdam Selection Committee 2018: Jeff McKenna (chair) Frank Warmerdam Markus Neteler Steve Lime Paul Ramsey Sophia Parafina Daniel Morissette Helena Mitasova Martin Davis Venkatesh Raghavan Arnulf Christl Gary Sherman Maria Brovelli Andrea Aime Astrid Emde News item: https://www.osgeo.org/foundation-news/call-for-nominations-for-the-2019-sol-katz-award/ ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[OSGeo-Discuss] Call for State of the Map SotM 2019 talks and presentations is now open
The State of the Map 2019 [1] is going to come to Heidelberg (Germany) from September 21-23, 2019. The HOT Summit [8] will be September 19 – 20, 2019. The call for State of the Map 2019 presentations is now open. The deadline is: 25th April 2019. There will be a separate call for submissions to the Academic Track. As of now we are accepting your talks and presentations in the following State of the Map 2019 tracks: * OSM Basics: Information dedicated to newcomers * Community & Foundation: Bringing people together, working group experiences, strategies & vision * Mapping: All about making the mapping easier and better * Cartography: Your ideas on how to create good-looking manifestations of the OSM dataset * Software Development: Software for processing and editing data * Data Analysis & Data Model: Reflections about the OSM data, its model and analysis of quality and completeness * User Experiences: Tell your surprising story of using OSM as an end-user * Academic Track: There will be a proper academic track, it will be announced separately! Two novelties deserve a special mention: * The “OSM Basics” track: We would like to welcome newcomers with contributions that get them started in the fascinating world of OpenStreetMap. These talks should specifically address the needs of people not overly familiar with the OSM ecosystem. * The “Extended talk” submission type: Big ideas need time to grow. For talks in this category we will allow double the time (40 min) compared to the usual talks. Make sure to mention why your talk needs this extended space. You will find the Call for Participations and the link to the submission form at [2]: https://2019.stateofthemap.org/calls/general/ We are looking forward to your fresh ideas and beautiful maps! Have a look at our schedule for the detailed steps [2]. Till then we have many challenges - from simple to challenging, to help describe and train people in the value of Open Source GIS. For this release, we hope to help OSGeo Community projects join OSGeoLive, and work out how we can keep within our size constraints. We'd love to build a cloud version of OSGeoLive for this release. It would make OSGeoLive, and OSGeo software much more accessible. It seems elusively achievable, but we haven't worked it out yet. If you think you could help, we'd love to hear from you. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [Board] Fwd: How to retire membership status?
Hi Maxi, my mail was only technical and I also noticed it when I wrote it that I did not say anything about the case. Sara wrote : "...so I'm revisiting this request: please change my Charter membership status to "retired". ... cc'd board@lists to help facilitate the request." And this was the only thing I focussed on with my answer. It was not my intention to be insensitive or ignorant. Sure we - board - still should discuss the case. It is topic for the next board meeting. This call the OSGeo code of conduct committee and the board in its highest function of guarantor of the community to address the accuses and take public position with an official communication. Whether the accuses are true or not I believe this situation is negatively impacting our community brand and trust. This fact cannot pass over silence anymore and therefore I publicly call the board to urgently express and take a position on this. Let's see if this mail worth a response...
