[OSGeo-Discuss] How to Flock Together at FOSS4G Seoul! - e-Newsletter No.5

2015-07-13 Thread FOSS4G Seoul 2015
Mapo galbi or Mapo jumulleok, but
for Koreans, these words go hand in hand. Koreans know that even though you can
get galbi or jumulleok almost anywhere, the best place to go for that real,
unforgettable taste is Mapo.
Although the story of how Mapo became the mecca of dwaeji galbi and jumulleok
is not known for certain, some say that it started around the 1950s because of
Mapo's location right next to the Hangang (River). Mapo, known as Maponaru at
that time, and was an area of commerce and trade. Many seamen came through
here, and as a result, restaurants began popping up to serve the growing number
of hungry customers, most of which served marinated meat. Maponaru is gone now
sixty years later, but many of the original barbeque restaurants are still
standing.

▶ What is Galbi?
Galbi (갈비) literally translates to rib, and is beef or pork short ribs that
are typically marinated in a concoction of soy sauce, sliced scallions, garlic,
ginger juice, sugar, sesame seeds, sesame oil, and pepper and then grilled. The
meat is generally scored to allow for the marinade to soak in.

▶ What is Jumulleok?
Jumulleok (주물럭) is pork sirloin that has been lightly marinated in a concoction
of sesame oil, salt, garlic, and pepper and then charcoal-grilled. The name
jumulleok comes from the word jumulleokgeorida (주물럭거리다), which means to
knead or rub, which describes the action of how jumulleok is made (the
marinade is kneaded into the meat).

TRAVEL TIPS

PLACE TO GO (http://www.visitseoul.net/)
Itaewon

1) Gyeongnidan-gil
Gyeongnidan-gil is a few minute walk from Noksapyeong Station(subway line #6)
Exit 2 in the direction of Namsan Tunnel 3. Small restaurants, cafes and pubs
can be found lined up on each alley on the walk along Gyeongnidan-gil. The
unique side-street stores here have emerged as the hot places preferred by the
young people for their simple yet exotic characteristics.
The most popular alleys of Gyeongnidan-gil are “Jang Jinwoo Street” and the
“Craft Beer Alley”.

2) Antique Furniture Street
The “Antique Furniture Street” displaying antique European furniture can be
found on the street close to Itaewon Station(subway line #6) Exit 4. There are
currently around 90 furniture stores on the Antique Furniture Street. Most of
these stores sell antique furniture and interior pieces brought in personally
from Europe. They have captured the hearts of furniture lovers and collectors
because they carry products hard to find at other shops and pieces which have a
long history of their own.

3) Usadan-gil
An unfamiliar sight can be spotted when you climb up the hills located behind
the Itaewon Fire Station. Shops such as Halal restaurants with store signs
written in both Korean and English giving off the pungent smell of spices,
butcher shops selling muttons which are hard to find in Korea, and general
stores displaying chador and hijab are lined up along the street.

4) World Food Street
The World Food Street located on the back of Hamilton Hotel features cuisines
from more than 30 countries around the world such as those in Asia, America and
Europe. This street is currently the most popular area in Itaewon because there
are many shops which allow you to enjoy cuisines of foreign countries hard to
experience without going on an overseas trip.

PLACE TO EAT (http://www.visitseoul.net/)
Sinsa-dong Ganjang Gejang Alley

Ganjang gejang translates to crabs marinated in soy sauce. Ganjang gejang
is a variety of jeotgal, salted fermented seafood in Korean cuisine. To make
ganjang gejang, fresh blue crabs are marinated in a ganjang (soy sauce)-based
marinade. Historical records on gejang can be found in books written during the
Joseon Dynasty (1392 - 1910). Records state that the consumption of gejang in
Korea appeared at least as early as the 1600s.
Ganjang gejang was originally referred to as gejang, but is now called
ganjang gejang these days to differentiate it from yangnyeom gejang. The
latter is relatively a new dish that emerged, and involves the use of gochugaru
(red chili pepper flakes) instead of ganjang. Yangnyeom literally means
seasoning or seasoned in Korean but refers to the spicy sauce made with
gochugaru.

TRAVEL TIPS

PLACE TO GO (http://www.visitseoul.net/)
Bukchon Hanok Village (http://www.visitseoul.net/)

Bukchon Hanok Village sits between the two palaces of the Joseon Dynasty,
Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung. Unlike other hanok villages, Bukchon was not
created for tourists but it is a living village inhabited by Seoulites,
comprising about 900 hanoks spread across 11 dongs (administrative sections).
The reason there are so many traditional houses in this area is that many
yonagbans (people from the ruling class) lived here during Joseon
Dynasty(1392-1910).
The most famous part of Bukchon Hanok Village is Gahoedong-gil(Alley) in the
31, Gahoe-dong area which amazes visitors with the sight of hundreds of hanoks
clustered together in midtown Seoul and with the stunning panoramic views over
the city from the top of the alley.

PLACE TO EAT (http://www.visitseoul.net/)
Gwangjang Market’s Jeon Ally (http://www.visitseoul.net/)
Jeon Ally running a length of about 30 meters starting from the entrance of the
market. Although this may sound quite long for such a humble food alley,
several stores are stalls are crammed in along the length of it, making the
idea of personal space a laughable matter. But regardless of the fact that
eating here means being crammed shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers, there
won’t be a single person in the whole lot with a scowl on their face. And
that’s because their mouths are too busy happily munching away at bindaetteok
and other varieties of jeon, or too busy gulping down bowls full of markgeolli.
The combination of jeon and makgeolli is so universally enjoyed you’ll see all
kinds of people eating here.

TRAVEL TIPS

PLACE TO GO, NEAR VENUE (http://www.visitseoul.net/)
Yangjae Citizens’ Forest

Yangjae Citizens’ Forest was created in 1986 ahead of that year's Asian Games
and the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It features over 70 different species of tree
including zelkova, maple and pine trees and has sports facilities for
volleyball and tennis, a barefoot walking area, a memorial to Yun Bong-gil and
a wedding hall. Above all, the forest is considered an excellent resource for
conservation and education as well as being a popular picnic destination with
Seoulites.

PLACE TO EAT (http://www.visitseoul.net/)
Shindang-dong Tteok-bokki Ally
Whether it is day or night, this tteok-bokki alley is always crowded. Here,
tteok-bokki is cooked directly at your table in a large pan filled with rice
cakes, fish cakes, fried dumplings, hardboiled eggs, ramen noodles, jjolmyeon
noodles and various vegetables.
Each restaurant has its own special sauce, so no two venues are the same.
Generally however, the tteok-bokki of this area is sweeter than it is spicy.
After you’ve eaten all the rice cake, you can mix rice and crushed laver
seaweed in the remaining sauce. As most of the restaurants here are open 24
hours a day, it’s a great place for a late-night snack. The tteok-bokki alley
is located near the Dongdaemun History Culture Park.
* 5 minutes walk from Exit 7 of Sindang Station, Subway Line #2 or #6
