[Regina Obe]
OSGeo7 is back up and been for a couple of hours. I still plan to move some
services over particularly ldap to osgeo9 this weekend
since that impacts pretty much everything.

turn them off.

You could, setup a group for your mailing list, and invite everyone that was on
your mailman to join that group so as soon as they register/login for first time

, they are automatically added to the group.

In the group admin settings, you can set this as default for new users of the
group:

So by setting the group, to watch the category (your mailing list), you
essentially force a mailing list behavior.

I think I mentioned before, but just in case, when you set up a category, you
can set it to allow anyone with an account or only allow people in a group to
be able to

Post topics and reply to topics. So that would emulate the current mailman
behavior of only mailing list members can post to a mailing list.

I think the only real lists we have are the QGIS-fr-user, General, OSGeo Site
Feedback, and OSGeoLive-docs

The rest are mailman mirrors only so regular users wouldn't be able to post to
them.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Mailing lists to discourse migration

2024-01-02 Thread Regina Obe via Discuss
They would need to log into discourse at least once and then mark the category
as “Watching”

Like for example – the qgis-fr-user category is here -
https://discourse.osgeo.org/c/qgis/qgis-fr-user/5

And then within your profile, there is an Emails section, you can decide if you
want to be emailed or not for watched categories and how frequently.

There is also a decision category managers (aka mailing list admins) need to
make if they want anyone with an OSGeo discourse account to be able to post to
their categories, or only people in a group. You can invite all people in your
old mailing list into the new group to expedite things.

Subject: Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Mailing lists to discourse migration

In case we decide to migrate, I was wondering what kind of effort is required
from a current mailing list (mailman2) user to switch to discourse if they want
to keep using it as a mailing list. E.g., would they need to login first
(potentially create a new account?) and then set anything from the discourse
interface? I understand this is all new, so instructions may not be available
yet, but I am just trying to understand what kind of burden the transition
represents for a regular user.

Thanks,

Anna

First of all, this IS THE DISCUSSION. We've only moved one mailing list. We
are just encouraging people to try it out
first by allowing us to mirror their lists. No harm in that I see. Most likely
the lists that will move first are those with not that many people, and who are
dissatisfied with mail lists like some of the QGIS users groups.

OpenStreetMap put together a nice intro, which I'm hoping we can pattern our
intro after:

https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/how-to-use-this-forum-for-new-users/314/9

which links to this discussion about pros and cons of mailing lists vs.
Discourse

https://meta.discourse.org/t/why-use-discourse-instead-of-a-email-mailing-list/54298

My impetus for wanting to move is people asking for it, and complaining about
how mailing lists don't work
for people who want only casual involvement.

Personally I hate mailing lists so they don't work for me. I only have discuss
in digest mode cause most of the topics don't interest me.
I only subscribe to a few mailing lists, but I do see with discourse, I can at
least peak into others and watch specific topics, and be selectively emailed in
only things that interest me or if someone mentions my name.

We need to move either to Mailman3 or Discourse - end of story. Mailman2 is
dead and in looking at what we get with Mailman3, effort to move,
and all the people screaming over the years for discourse
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/2306
, and seeing the success of discourse for projects such as OpenStreetMap
https://community.openstreetmap.org/ , Gnome, I'm leaning heavily toward
Discourse is the best solution
for most and most flexible to configure.

* It will allow people who only want to interact via Email only to still do so

That is not to say there aren't issues with how it handles emails we need to
work out, which Sandro has made clear, but at least he's trying, so I can't
complain about him too much.
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/3072

* It will allow people to just post a question and only follow the discussion
about their question -- I know sounds selfish, but FOSS is about scratching
your own itch, and hanging around for longer when you decide these people are
cool and what they talk about is cool.

* It has integration with ActivityPub, thus allowing discussions to flow thru
to channels like mastodon if wanted. We've been experimenting with that and
it's been pretty cool so far and I hope we can experiment with more facets of
discourse, like the language translation of forum questions etc.

What different channels? We have matrix (which largely replaces IRC and allows
people on slack to interact with people on Matrix and IRC),
Discourse I am hoping to replace Mailman with to satisfy the mailing list crowd
of people and begin to satisfy the needs of others with no patience for mailing
lists, who relied on Nabble for their interaction (which nabble is now dead).
(so this is about reducing fragmentation in my mind, not increasing it). It's
about bridging the gap between the old timers and newcomers (just as Matrix did
for IRC/Slack/etc)

We are not forcing anyone's hands at this point. I expect we will live with
both Mailman2 and Discourse at least for the rest of the year, and perhaps
longer.

[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo7 will be going down in about 24 hrs for standard maintenance

2022-07-28 Thread Regina Obe via Discuss
I will be rebooting osgeo7 in about 24 hrs.
During this downtime, the following services will be down.

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/SAC_Service_Status#Services_on_osgeo7

Note that services that rely on ldap.osgeo.org will be impacted during this
maintenance window.
Expect people to not be able to log into these services even if they are not
on osgeo7. Services not on osgeo7 that will be impacted (e.g. logging in to
OSGeo servers , weblate.osgeo.org, repo.osgeo.org, qgis plugin upload,
wiki.osgeo.org)

I don't expect more than 30 minutes of downtime.

I will send a note before I start the process and after the process is
complete.
Feel free to write me if you have issues with this.

Regina

There will be a lot of up and down while I do that. I'm hoping to be

On a side note - we had an interruption today with many of our domains being
unreachable.
It was an issue with our DNS provider Pair Domains with their NS servers.
I think they are still working on the issue, but things seem more or less

[OSGeo-Discuss] Wiki edit rights issue

2021-05-08 Thread Regina Obe
After the change in Wiki to change to LDAP authentication, a number of
people are having issues editing pages.

This is because they are not being removed from certain groups that
designated for users in process of merging.
We are working on fixing that moving forward. In the meantime, those with
this issue can do one of the following:

Just put a note on this ticket with your name -
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/2599

Alternatively if you have a wiki admin/bureaucrat readily handy who has
already been successfully merged, you can ask them to fix your account.

To Administrators/Bureaucrats (thanks to all who have already stepped in)
-

There are generally two causes. I'm going to tell you how to fix the more
general and easier to fix case.

Go to user rights page - https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Special:UserRights and
look up the person in question:

If you see the following groups checked on their account, uncheck them and
save:

-
wiki account
 account in progress of converting
-

Then save and that should fix the issue.

The harder to fix problem are when people are under two or more equivalent
names but different in casing or _

Case in point was Astrid emde vs. Astrid_emde vs astrid_emde

Those ones the account may look okay but I have to go into the back to see
it's duplicated. Just put those on the ticket and I'll fix.

We're hoping to have the issue resolved in next week and then we'll fix all
the accounts that are broken. If we can't I'll put similar messages like
this on the wiki login page.

Thanks,

[OSGeo-Discuss] WIKI migrating to LDAP upcoming Friday

2021-03-28 Thread Regina Obe
After 13 years of planning we are finally upgrading wiki.osgeo.org to
authenticate with LDAP and ONLY use LDAP thenceforward for authentication as
detailed in below ticket.

https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/165

The move will happen this coming Friday, at which point, when you log in:

1) You will be informed your wiki account will be migrated, and led thru the
steps of migrating your wiki account to LDAP.

2) After the migration, you will then only use your LDAP account for your
wiki editing and all your previous history will be moved to your LDAP
account.
3) Future Wiki login will require the user to have an LDAP account, so no
wiki approval of accounts will happen thenceforward. The Request Account
link at the top sends the user to our LDAP create account page.

I have done a trial run of the migration at the below:

https://staging.wiki.osgeo.org

Please try the above and let me know if you run into any issues. You can
report said issues on the trac ticket:

https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/165

If no issues reported before the final planned migration this Friday, we
will proceed as planned.

If you have questions -- feel free to reply to this email.

Thanks,
Regina and SAC Admin Team

[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo SAC Meeting highlights

2020-06-06 Thread Regina Obe
We had a meeting today - sadly only wildintellect, robe, and jef
contributed, but I feel we got a lot accomplished.

Discussions were

1. How to deal with OSGeo4W and other (Windows / Mac build ) needs -- I
think more research needs to be done here.
I started a page as to my understanding of needs and what research needs to
be done to push forward.

Feel free to add to this page
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/SAC_Shared_Building_Services

2. How to convert wiki authentication to use our LDAP so it's like the other
services we offer?
Now that wiki has been migrated to latest version and Latest Debian OS - we
are ready to start work on this.

I sent a note to the most promising contractor proposal we received and he
said he can do it. I'll let you know once we find out more details about
this.

So the general plan is as follows:
1. Do some trial tests in dev environment I setup (that is a backup of
production wiki and secure (our ldap) )
2. Then push changes to production once we are comfortable we have the work
flow right

Workflow:

Users log in with their current wiki user and then log in again with their
LDAP credentials.
Information about their LDAP user would be added to their wiki account and,
in the future, they could use their LDAP credentials to log into their wiki
user account.
We ideally will not allow any new wiki accounts to be created (outside of
LDAP).
Eventually after some grace period we would then retire the original wiki
login method in favor of LDAP.

Thanks,
Regina

I think every one that is logged in has access to view all the dashboards
and admins can edit them. So it's just the navigation that is a bit screwy.
I usually just favorite the ones I like and then they show on my home page.

You want to volunteer to help me figure out the UI stuff. I'm more focused
on making sure we are collecting the metrics we need and there are a ton
more we can be collecting that would probably be useful.

In the ldap config there is also a way to segregate people based on LDAP
group and then do a finer grain control of the dashboards viewed.

The Prometheus queries are all written in some special time series focused
language https://prometheus.io/docs/prometheus/latest/querying/examples/

I don't have time to learn all that so I've just been installing dashboards
from Grafana for Prometheus that look useful and that query the metrics we
are currently collecting. https://grafana.com/grafana/dashboards We can
study some of the queries and merge together the ones we like into a single
dashboard I think will satisfy your need for an all-encompassing dashboard.
If you look under the hood of the json of the dashboards you'll see the data
sources specified (corresponding to each of the Prometheus servers) and the
job node etc.

Regina

[OSGeo-Discuss] Status report for April - System Contract I 2020

2020-05-02 Thread Regina Obe
Below is list of things I've been involed with in April revolving around
core infrastructure

1) Rebuilding Wiki. I built a new debian 10 container with latest
Wikimedia, PHP, apache installed -- but still exploring the db and stuff to
create a script to chuck bad user accounts.
I also need to retest the data restore script I have setup and revisit some
plugins that did not come thru (no upgrade path for them).

https://wiki.new.osgeo.org (this is running on OSGeo3)

I'm hoping to do the final migration sometime late May.

Once this is done we can setup a dev of this new version to do the LDAP
integration. This we can contract out -- we have two proposals from outside
contractors for LDAP work.

The below services are new/updated ones that use OSGeo LDAP for
authentication

2) Server Monitoring -- To replace the old munin monitoring, I put in place
Prometheus / Grafana (https://prometheus.io/docs/visualization/grafana/ )
(this is so I can address recent complaints about speed etc and know when a
container needs more resources)

https://prometheus.io/ - Prometheus is a monitoring tool with already a lot
of what they call "Exporters" available for it, most of the exporters are
written in Go. Some are specifically geared for specific applications and
seems like perhaps not much effort to write our own if needed. Since Go is
statically compiled these work on old servers as well and can be installed
by just copying the binaries and setting up the service script.

Exporters run as services on each Container / VM. I haven't installed any
of these on osgeo6 or osgeo5, but have many installed on the new LXD
containers
Exporter service scripts I have committed to this repo -
https://git.osgeo.org/gitea/sac/prometheus-config (and have collected the
node exporter (for OS monitoring) and nginx exporter (for nginx monitoring)

The nginx monitoring is installed on all the nginx proxies (OSGeo7, OSGeo3,
OSGeo4) and download container

There are 3 prometheus servers (I have 3 instead of 1 to ease network
management since the Prometheus servers are all on the same private network
of the containers they pull metrics from they don't need any additional
whitelisting)
OSGeo7 - nginx (collects all the metrics from the OSGeo7 container
exporters)
OSGeo3 - monitor (also runs Grafana and collects all metrics from OSGeo3
containers)
OSGeo4 - osgeo4-nginx (collects metrics from OSGeo4 containers)

Grafana is running on OSGeo3 monitor container -> https://monitor.osgeo.org
(all OSGeo LDAP users can log in to see the metrics).
I whitelisted it on OSGeo7 and OSGeo4 so it can query the Prometheus servers
for monitor stats.

3) https://repo.osgeo.org -- Jody Garnett spear-headed this effort. The
Repo service is running Nexus repository management.
Feel free to login and check it out and if you want to use it in some way
for your projects -- Please put in a trac ticket -
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/
Nexus supports the following kinds of repos - Maven, Docker Registry, Apt,
Yum, Nuget, R CPAN, RubyGems, npm (and some other stuff I've never heard of)

At the moment the following projects are using it (GeoTools, GeoServer,
GeoNetwork -- for their maven repo), (PostGIS / GEOS to manage docker
containers we use for drone bot regression testing)

4) https://matrix.osgeo.org -- container running Matrix (synapse server
https://matrix.org/docs/guides/installing-synapse ) bridges with our
existing IRC channels and can be used for private chat rooms like GSoc ones
for example
Requires an OSGeo LDAP account to use. Talk to Sandro Santilli if you have
questions about how to use it.

5) nextcloud.osgeo.org - upgraded to 18.03 (Hub) (from 15)
https://nextcloud.com/hub/ . There was some discussion about coediting
documents being slow from I think QGIS group. Our version is running
Collabora for (Libre Office / MS Office online document editing)
I am debating if we should switch to the Community server version which
uses OnlyOffice for document editing / collaboration (which I have
installed on experimental https://nextcloud.gallery.osgeo.org )
Waiting for feedback from QGIS PSC group to see if it's worthwhile to
switch. From a cursory play with both, the OnlyOffice seems faster (but I
have no one to collaborate with to test the group editing features).
As far as editing goes
Collabora seems to be better for LibreOffice , I had issues trying to
upgrade it though in that the PDF export no longer worked so had to revert
back.
OnlyOffice seems to be better for Microsoft documents (Word, Excel,
Powerpoint) (it screwed up one of my libre .odt docs, and also doesn't have
ability to view LibreOffice drawings from what I can tell)

Thanks,
Regina

[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo7 patch updates later today

2020-02-28 Thread Regina Obe
I'm planning to do some patch updates to OSGeo7 host in a couple of hours.

This will cause some period of downtime on

Main website: www.osgeo.org
Download.osgeo.org
Trac.osgeo.org
Git.osgeo.org

And other things listed on this page:
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/SAC_Service_Status#osgeo_7

I don't expect the downtime to be more than 1/2 hr. I will send another
notice just before and just after.

If you have an issue with this feel free to respond.

[OSGeo-Discuss] webextra.osgeo.osuosl.org is now old-webextra on osgeo7

2019-12-08 Thread Regina Obe
I created a replica of webextra.osgeo.osuosl.org and moved a ton of sites
from it to osgeo7.

I have shutoff the webservice on webextra.osgeo.osuosl.org. I plan to
shutoff the server completely this coming week to see if anything breaks.

This I think is the VM on osgeo3 to go, so once a grace period of week after
shut-off is done, I plan to have it reformatted so it can be used for
production containers

For those who used this server, can you verify you can connect to the new
home on osgeo7

Using instructions here:

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/SAC_Service_Status#osgeo_7

So the login would be

ssh your_ldap_user_name@osgeo7-old-webextra

Key notable things that were on that server that I moved

1) live.osgeo.org - I'm not sure how this is updated, so whoever is n
charge of this should verify they can update using new setup

2) planet.osgeo.org

3) Various foss4g archives including video.foss4g.org

4) Munin (not resetup but plan to setup a new container for it)

5) journal.osgeo.org (Not sure what this is tempted to just kill it)

Thanks,

Regina

[OSGeo-Discuss] OSUOSL mirror link on download page

2019-11-29 Thread Regina Obe
We never got around to load balancing our download.osgeo.org with the osuosl
ftp one.

Part of me is thinking maybe it's not worth it to do so especially since the
osuosl one is not real time - could lag by hours.

So instead, I just put the link to their mirror on our download page.

https://download.osgeo.org/ in cases where we may need extra bandwidth e.g.
QGIS downloads.

the other benefit to theirs is it does support the ftp protocol in addition
to http.

Let me know if anyone has issues with this change.

Thanks,

Regina

[OSGeo-Discuss] old.www.osgeo.org has been moved to osgeo7

2019-10-30 Thread Regina Obe
The web.osuosl.osgeo.org VM on osgeo3 I think the last thing I had running
on it was the old.www.osgeo.org and some of the rewrites.

I haven't moved over all the rewrites, but I feel a lot of them might be
obsolete.

I've shut down the apache on the old VM to see what breaks and will keep it
like that for a while and then shut it off for good.

If you run into any issues with things not working please let me know either
by responding to this email or a trac ticket.

[OSGeo-Discuss] trac.osgeo.org, svn.osgeo.org, git.osgeo.org DNS moved to pointed to OSGeo7

2019-10-01 Thread Regina Obe
I have moved the DNS for trac.osgeo.org, svn.osgeo.org, git.osgeo.org to
OSGeo7.

Note that this just means the sites will be proxied thru NGINX but is still
pointing at tracsvn.osgeo.osuosl.org.

This first step is to make sure no unforeseen issues with proxying the
traffick and to have 0 DNS transition downtime when I do the final server
move next week.

I don't expect there to be any issues, but if you run into any - please
reply back to this email or report on our ticket tracker.

https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo

Of course if you are having issues, you might not be able to get to our
ticket tracker.

Next weekend when I do the official server move, I expect there to be 1-2 hr
downtime as I need to shut off the services and transfer the VM.

I'll send a note when I start that and put a note on all the sites that they
are under maintenance.

FYI that www.osgeo.org <http://www.osgeo.org> has moved to our own servers and

The main change was disabling libavatar replace plugin which was causing a bulk

Please checkout to make sure all works for you.
