You could, setup a group for your mailing list, and invite everyone that was on your mailman to join that group so as soon as they register/login for first time , they are automatically added to the group. In the group admin settings, you can set this as default for new users of the group: So by setting the group, to watch the category (your mailing list), you essentially force a mailing list behavior. I think I mentioned before, but just in case, when you set up a category, you can set it to allow anyone with an account or only allow people in a group to be able to Post topics and reply to topics. So that would emulate the current mailman behavior of only mailing list members can post to a mailing list. > I also wonder if the "mailing list behaviour" is good enough, but this we can > tell > by testing it, so I suggest all users interested in such a migration to test > the > current "categories" (equivalent of "mailing list" in Discourse terms) and > see if > they are able to create a new thread by email, for example. > > --strk; I think the only real lists we have are the QGIS-fr-user, General, OSGeo Site Feedback, and OSGeoLive-docs The rest are mailman mirrors only so regular users wouldn't be able to post to them. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Mailing lists to discourse migration
They would need to log into discourse at least once and then mark the category as “Watching” Like for example – the qgis-fr-user category is here - https://discourse.osgeo.org/c/qgis/qgis-fr-user/5 And then within your profile, there is an Emails section, you can decide if you want to be emailed or not for watched categories and how frequently. There is also a decision category managers (aka mailing list admins) need to make if they want anyone with an OSGeo discourse account to be able to post to their categories, or only people in a group. You can invite all people in your old mailing list into the new group to expedite things. E.g., would they need to login first (potentially create a new account?) and then set anything from the discourse interface? I understand this is all new, so instructions may not be available yet, but I am just trying to understand what kind of burden the transition represents for a regular user. We've only moved one mailing list. We are just encouraging people to try it out first by allowing us to mirror their lists. No harm in that I see. Most likely the lists that will move first are those with not that many people, and who are dissatisfied with mail lists like some of the QGIS users groups. OpenStreetMap put together a nice intro, which I'm hoping we can pattern our intro after: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/how-to-use-this-forum-for-new-users/314/9 which links to this discussion about pros and cons of mailing lists vs. Discourse https://meta.discourse.org/t/why-use-discourse-instead-of-a-email-mailing-list/54298 My impetus for wanting to move is people asking for it, and complaining about how mailing lists don't work for people who want only casual involvement. Personally I hate mailing lists so they don't work for me. I only have discuss in digest mode cause most of the topics don't interest me. I only subscribe to a few mailing lists, but I do see with discourse, I can at least peak into others and watch specific topics, and be selectively emailed in only things that interest me or if someone mentions my name. We need to move either to Mailman3 or Discourse - end of story. Mailman2 is dead and in looking at what we get with Mailman3, effort to move, and all the people screaming over the years for discourse https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/2306 , and seeing the success of discourse for projects such as OpenStreetMap https://community.openstreetmap.org/ , Gnome, I'm leaning heavily toward Discourse is the best solution for most and most flexible to configure. * It will allow people who only want to interact via Email only to still do so That is not to say there aren't issues with how it handles emails we need to work out, which Sandro has made clear, but at least he's trying, so I can't complain about him too much. https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/3072 * It will allow people to just post a question and only follow the discussion about their question -- I know sounds selfish, but FOSS is about scratching your own itch, and hanging around for longer when you decide these people are cool and what they talk about is cool. * It has integration with ActivityPub, thus allowing discussions to flow thru to channels like mastodon if wanted. We've been experimenting with that and it's been pretty cool so far and I hope we can experiment with more facets of discourse, like the language translation of forum questions etc. > The introduction of so many new/different communication channels resulted in > this fragmentation leaving people with this feeling of being excluded, which > is to > be avoided. >

We have matrix (which largely replaces IRC and allows people on slack to interact with people on Matrix and IRC), Discourse I am hoping to replace Mailman with to satisfy the mailing list crowd of people and begin to satisfy the needs of others with no patience for mailing lists, who relied on Nabble for their interaction (which nabble is now dead). (so this is about reducing fragmentation in my mind, not increasing it). It's about bridging the gap between the old timers and newcomers (just as Matrix did for IRC/Slack/etc) We are not forcing anyone's hands at this point. [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo 7 upgrade starting in a bit
Sorry for the delay. I have not started the OSGeo7 upgrade first. My OpenVPN wasn't able to connect to the console, but I have that issue squared away now with OSUOSL staff help. [OSGeo-Discuss] Heads up OSGeo7 restart and upgrade later today
I will be restarting OSGEO7 in about an hour (it's been needing a reboot for a while) and I will also be doing a dist upgrade. There will be a lot of up and down while I do that. I'm hoping to be finished in a 1-2 hr time frame. Feel free to respond to this email if you have issues with this. Impacted services are listed on: https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/SAC_Service_Status#osgeo_7 On a side note - we had an interruption today with many of our domains being unreachable. It was an issue with our DNS provider Pair Domains with their NS servers. I think they are still working on the issue, but things seem more or less back to normal for us. [OSGeo-Discuss] Heads up about an LDAP issue we are having
An intermediary certificate for LetsEncrypt expired today. https://letsencrypt.org/docs/dst-root-ca-x3-expiration-september-2021/ This has caused validation issues with older systems that are not verifying the new way. One of these is sadly our beloved trac.osgeo.org So if you try to log into trac.osgeo.org you will get a server error. I'm still in the middle of troubleshooting and trying to fix.
