[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter member nomination: Ben Caradoc-Davies

2017-09-06 Thread Jody Garnett
*name:* Ben Caradoc-Davies
*country:* New Zealand
*contact email:* b...@transient.nz
*nomination:*

Ben Caradoc-Davies is a longstanding member of the GeoServer community -
first with his role at the Australian research group "CSIRO" and more
recently as a independent contractor from is native New Zealand.

As a contributor Ben has demonstrated excellent leadership (volunteering
with the GeoServer Project Steering Committee and GeoTools Project
Management Committee) and mentoring of new contributors by answering
questions, offering encouragement, backed by kind words and constructive
reviews.

Ben is exceptionally generous with his time: willing to take on the day to
day challenges of running a project, leading meetings, issuing multiple
releases a year, and stepping in for emergencies. The team has come to
depend on Ben's dedication to quality watching out for the build servers
and monitoring the travis automated builds.

Ben is also takes on some of the harder open source challenges for the
foundation as a whole. In my time as an OSGeo board member Ben has helped
clearly articulated our legal questions, and taken part in meetings with
our legal council.

I also had the privilege of organizing a foss4g-au event with Ben and
follow his open source advocacy work in Australia.

Although it is perhaps not a character reference I personally appreciate
Ben's coding and communication skills. His ability to contribute code in a
consistent, professional manner, and his communication skills make working
on the GeoServer project that much easier.

Dear All,
it is a great honor for me to nominate Jorge Samuel Mendes de Jesus.

Jorge is active and recognized for his work for years in the world of
FOSS4G. He is currently working at Geocat and is involved in various Open
Source ProjectS, amongst them the famous GeoNetwork and PyWPS. Jorge is
someone with a clear vision and positive thinking.

Jorge attends the FOSS4G on a regular manner and often make presentation
and workshop there.

I have faith in Jorge and feel that he is someone representative and that
will be of big benefit for OSGeo.

All the best,

More recently, he has been active in the open data community, deploying,

the Federal GeoCloud interagency pilot project from 2012 to 2015. Currently

Subject: [OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Member Nomination: Doug Newcomb

I would like to nominate Doug Newcomb, a GIS guru at the US Fish and Wildlife
office in Raleigh, NC as OSGeo charter member.

For many years he has been a fantastic advocate of FOSS4G in the government
agencies offering not only presentations, organization of sessions and meetings
but also technical help with Mapserver, GDAL/OGR tools and GRASS GIS.
His work with lidar data is famous for breaking records in the amount of data
processed and information extracted with minimal resources.
He has contributed to testing GRASS and other lidar tools and helped many
people to get started with FOSS4G.

I believe that we need more people like Doug and Michael Smith (also nominated
this year by Jeff McKenna) who can promote FOSS and OSGeo in the government
agencies not only by talking about it but also by using it and demonstrating
how well it works for important agency tasks and cutting edge applications.

I believe Doug would be a great representative of OSGeo and provide a much
needed connection to government agencies as an active charter member.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Member Nomination period ended

2012-07-07 Thread Seven (aka Arnulf)

Folks,
the nomination period for new OSGeo Charter Members ended yesterday.

A big Thank You to all who actively contributed by nominating
candidates and supporting their nominations! Another big Thank You to
all candidates for representing their OSGeo community aspect at the
board level and for electing a dedicated board of directors.

As CRO I am very happy to say that the nomination period worked
smoothly (except that almost nobody cared to email the nomination to
the CRO address as requested... :-).

We now have 22 high level candidates [0] but only 20 open slots, a
number which I simply copied over from last year when I prepared the
schedule for 2012.

As per our New Membership Process [1] we can add between 10% and one
third of the existing Charter Membership, in this year this would be
13 to 42 members. My proposal to the board is to accept all 22 members
instead of running an election which would simply exclude two
potential charter members on a more or less arbitrary basis.

Therefore I defer the start of the election process for two days in
the hope that the board agrees with my proposal and we do not need to
have Charter Member elections at all.

Best regards have a nice weekend,
Arnulf

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Member Nomination: César Medina

2012-07-06 Thread Athina Trakas (OGC)

Hi,

I would like to nominate César Medina [1] from Chile for OSGeo Charter
membership.

When I first met César a few years back he was already an OSGeo and
FOSS4G enthusiast. Since then he has helped to raise the awareness of
the use of Free and Open Source Software in the Geo-Community in Chile
and other South American countries. And he additionally contributes to
the community on international level.

He will continue to promote initiatives related to Free Software for
GIS, with events, meetings and the geoinquietos Chile meeting in
Chile. He has helped organising the First Conference Chilean gvSIG [2]
and initiated a first FOSS4G South America in 2011 [3].

He would enrich the OSGeo community and would help to boost the uptake
of the community in Chile.

I think Doug would be an excellent choice. A definite +1.

I worked with Doug off and on for many years when I was with NC State
Government and he's always been a great collaborator and go-to person
when an issue with open source GIS software or big data needs solving.
He has worked on the NC GIS Conference Program committee for several
events and has been an agent of change there too - helping to bring
open source projects and software to the attention of the NC GIS
community. Something that particular conference has not been known for
until the last few years.

conferences like PgWest, SCALE, OSCON, MySQLConference. He has also
helped setup and work the OSGeo booth for several events. He is the

which has an active OSGeo presence and has been used to raise the
awareness of FOSS4G in the Silicon Valley and San Francisco startup

Ragi is also helps host and administer the annual OSGeo California

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Member Nomination: Peter Löwe

Dear all,

I'd like to nominate Peter Löwe [0] for OSGeo Charter Membership.
He is active in Free and Open Source GIS development for more than a
decade, specifically in the field of remote sensing, but also on rule
based systems, crisis management, high performance computation...

He collaborated with FOSSGIS.de (he has been its very first
non-founding member), Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam GFZ, the
South African Metereological Service (where he successfully introduced
his team to GRASS GIS), Geomancers.net and RapidEye AG among others
[1].
He wrote several GRASS modules, available in Addons [2], and obtained
RapidEye data for i.atcorr module [3], been a developer of the GISIX
live-linux DVD [4]. Moreover, he won several research prizes with FOSS
GIS work [see details at 0,1]

I met Peter at FOSS4G 2010 in Barcelona, and worked with him during
GRASS Community Sprint 2011 in Prague. He has been so far an effective
ambassador of OSGeo in corporate/academic environment, and he would
benefit from the official recognition of OSGeo community to achieve

Hi Anne, all,

I second Peter's nomination as charter member. I've met him at GRASS
Community Sprint 2011 and I think he's a natural OSGeo ambassador.

Thanks,
Margherita

 Dear all,

I'd like to nominate Peter Löwe [0] for OSGeo Charter Membership.
He is active in Free and Open Source GIS development for more than a
decade, specifically in the field of remote sensing, but also on rule

Hi all,

Pedro-Juan has been really active at OSGeo and specially OSGeo Spanish
Language Local Chapter (OSGeo-es) since the beginning of its
activities. He is member of the Board of Directors of OSGeo-es
(recently re-elected) and the Liason Officer between the LC and the
Foundation, always attentive with any task required from him.

So he is an experienced OSGeo'er with a good knowledge of the
foundation internals and an advanced user with experience on many
FOSS4G tools as his talks about OSGeo and OSGeo Live can demonstrate.
Finally he is also very active at our microchapter here at Valencia[2]
with talks and workshops.

The Charter Membership is needed of active profiles like him, in my
humble opinion he is a truly OSGeo advocate.

I hope you consider my nomination.

Cheers,

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Member Nomination: Andrea Aime

2012-06-25 Thread Jody Garnett
I would like to nominate Andrea Aime for OSGeo charter membership.

Andrea as a key contributor to the GeoServer[1] and GeoTools[2] projects.
Actually Andrea may the key contributor - the GeoServer issue tracker lists
Andrea as the project lead. While I feel I should quote some bug closing
statistics here, what is more important is his commitment to the community
(always ready with a code review) and supportive presence on the GeoServer and
GeoTools user lists.

[2] http://geotools.org/

As a public representative Andrea is beloved for his effective stage presence.
Most recognisable in the popular FOSS4G WMS Shootout series[3], or exploring
topics at regional events (most recently making the trip to FOSS4G-NA [4]).

I would like to join Cameron in this nomination.
I met Angelos in Athens a few weeks ago and we had a long conversation,
that gave me an opportunity to learn more about the B-side of his
outstanding contribution to OSGeo (the A-side being software
development, translations and OSGeo Live): the Greek OSGeo community. As
I made already clear a few days ago, I believe it is very important to
facilitate the growth of new, strong communities where they are still
missing. In a way, nominating Angelos is for me a way to support the
activity that he and his fellow Greek OSGeo members are already carrying
on, showing that OSGeo cares globally about local initiatives as much as
the local communities care about global developments (again, software).
Finally, Angelos was among the first ones to show an interest in Total
Open Station, the software I develop with others. Far from being led by
personal excitement, I see this interest towards the world of surveying
as a first step towards one of the most promising developments OSGeo may
and should achieve, namely being able to provide a complete software
(and hardware?) stack for surveying.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Member Nomination for Bob Basques [acceptence of nomination]

2011-11-21 Thread Bob Basques

All,

I would like to thank Steve L. for his nomination and trust in me
related to OSGEO and other topics that we've worked together on in the
past. Steve is in large part responsible for my interest in Open Source
alternatives that began with the use of MapServer in the early 90's.

I've never really thought about being recognized officially other than
possibly wanting to vote on some interesting OSGEO issues here and there
over the years. While I tried to attend the first OSGEO birthing
meeting, I ended up watching the process from the sidelines. I seem to
have gotten my views on things out there never the less during my
participation on the (OSGEO) lists (I'm on nine of them right now), I
should also mention that I'm also on a few other open source lists that
are not specifically Geo related, and that I work in the area of
application usability.

My main interest is in making the complicated tasks easier to
accomplish, for the ordinary user, primarily with Open Source tools
where feasible. I also work with software and hardware in combination
to build information systems from the ground up, while others projects
are just intended as improvements to existing systems.

My varied background in hardware and Geo related processes is
extensive, and it's in this cross pollination of ideas and open source
projects that I think makes me a valuable asset to OSGEO.

NOTE: I don't know that the following is pertinent or related to this
response, but I include it because I would like to see a similar list
from others about their interests / uses of OS software. Additionally, a
area of general expertise might be nice. Things like I'm interested in
promoting the US National Grid (USNG) for example.

OpenSource background:

Fluent in: MapServer and Mapfiles, GeoMoose, Perl, Shell scripts,
AutoCAD (FDO, WMS, WFS), Oracle Spatial

Somewhat Fluent in: GDAL/OGR, QGIS, Open Layers, MapScript, Apache,
KML, JSON, POSTGIS, MySQL, WebDAV, Ubuntu (LiveDVD)

Have used: MSQL, Nagios, Drupal, Plone, X3D

Experimenting(ed) with: LAMP, QGGIS (portable - Android), Portable
GeoMoose Stack (Apache, GeoMoose, PostGIS, Openlayers), Pano3D, 3dPDF,

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Member Nomination: Stephen Woodbridge

2011-11-21 Thread Stephen Woodbridge

Hi All,

Many thanks to Dan Putler and Daniel Kastl for their nomination of me.

I have been passionately involved in programming and algorithms since I
was 14 when I took a summer course in Fortran II at Swathmore College.
Yes, I am that old! :) I have been involved in development as a
programmer, manager, QA manager, project manager, marketing manager, but
10 years ago I got tired of corporate life and went back to programming
and consulting on my own. At that time, I wrote my own prototype
mapserver and then I ran into Mapserver. I decide it made more sense
work with it and found the world of OpenSource. From mapserver, I have
spread into working with many of the OSGeo projects and many of the not
yet big enough for incubation projects.

I am on the PSC for Mapserver, PAGC, and pgRouting and actively involved
with using other projects like mod_geocache (now mapcache), OpenLayers,
PostGIS, and GDAL/OGR. I also have been a Google Summer of Code Mentor
for the last three years for pgRouting projects. I try to bring a few
things to each of the communities that I interact with:

1. I try to help users by answering questions and being constructive,
with the intent that if I can answer it then that frees up the more
important staff to focus on programing and other project activities.

2. My many years of corporate life taught me much about the software
development process and more importantly that projects have products and
users and we need to think about them when we make decisions in a
project. I try to be a user advocate.

3. As a user of these projects, I am constantly trying to make them
better and easier to use. So I report bugs, encourage others to report
bugs, recommend enhancements, provide use cases, and occasionally
provide patches, answer other use questions, etc.

I am passionate about all the products I use, I advocate them to my
clients and recommend they fund development projects when they have
needs. I like to share my enthusiasm and ideas with others.

The bottom line for me is that I would be honored to be elected as a
charter member, but regardless of that, I enjoy doing what I'm doing, I
love solving problems and helping our community grow. I am interested in
being able to do more for OSGeo.

We have a great slate of candidates and I know many of them and they
would all be great additions to the OSGeo ranks in my opinion.

Thank you and best regards,
  -Steve Woodbridge

Steve is one of the original, and on going, members of the Project

In addition to the projects he is directly involved in, Steve has been a
important contributor to the user mailing lists of several other

important (and helpful) contributor to other lists as well.

Given his contributions to geospatial FOSS software and users of that

Nothing against Martin's nomination, but I wanted to point out the fact
that it is not a requirement to be a charter member to participate on
 any of OSGeo's committees AFAIK.

Good point. Let's reiterate, just to make sure: Everybody is free to
participate anywhere in OSGeo. This includes committee work, conference
organization, Web site, Marketing, founding Local Chapters, managing
OSGeo presence at events and so on. This is where the real life happens.
And if you are chair of a committee (meaning that you were elected by
peers because of your good work ) you automatically become a vice
president of OSGeo.
http://www.osgeo.org/content/foundation/board_and_officers.html

OSGeo Charter Members only nominate and elect the board of directors.
This happens once a year. In the rare case that OSGeo needs to change
it's bylaws we also need to go through he Charter Membership. This is
not to belittle the Charter Membership but just to make sure that this
is not a barrier to any activity in OSGeo.

Cheers,
Arnulf

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Member Nomination: Stephen Woodbridge

2011-11-14 Thread Dan Putler

Hi all,

We, Dan Putler and Daniel Kastl, are nominating Stephen Woodbridge to be
a Charter Member of OSGeo. We have both worked with Steve as part of a
project team, Daniel Kastl on pgRouting and Dan Putler on PAGC. We have
both found him to be an outstanding colleague and important contributor
to these projects.

Steve is one of the original, and on going, members of the Project
Steering Committee of the MapServer Project. He is also a member of the
Project Steering Committees of pgRouting and PAGC. In addition, he has
acted for several years as a mentor to Google Summer of Code students
who have worked on OSGeo Summer of Code projects.

In addition to the projects he is directly involved in, Steve has been a
important contributor to the user mailing lists of several other
projects. We feel his helpfulness to other participants on the
PostGIS-Users mailing list is particularly noteworthy, but he is an
important (and helpful) contributor to other lists as well.

Given his contributions to geospatial FOSS software and users of that
software, we believe that Steve would be a worthy Charter Member of OSGeo.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Member Nomination: Even Rouault

2011-11-11 Thread Tamas Szekeres
I hereby nominate Even Rouault http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Even_Rouault as
an OSGeo charter member.
Even has been contributing to various software projects promoted by OSGeo
(ie. GDAL, MapServer, Proj.4, libgeotiff, shapelib, libtiff) since 2006. He
is a commiter of MapServer and GDAL, the maintainer of various drivers, the
Java bindings and the member of the Project Steering Committee of GDAL
since 2007. Even has already demonstrated his expertise and deep knowledge
in the projects he is working on and he also provide valuable support for
the users and developers on the related mailing lists, IRC channels and the
trac. In addition to provide community support by fixing various issues
throughout the entire project, he is one of the greatest innovator
providing new functionalities and authoring several new drivers in
GDAL/OGR, you've probably already utilized these in the related OSGeo
projects as well.
In addition to his development work, Even is also a leading figure in the
QA testing of GDAL by increasing the test
coveragehttp://even.rouault.free.fr/of it's Python test suite. Let
us consider to appreciate his work by
electing him as a charter member!

[OSGeo-Discuss] charter member nomination: Tim Sutton

2011-11-09 Thread Duarte Carreira
I would like to nominate Tim Sutton.

I'm probably not the best person to introduce Tim, but here goes. I know Tim
mostly as Developer, Project Steering Committee member and project
co-administrator of Quantum GIS, from his educational materials (Gentle
Introduction to GIS excellent videos come to mind), great blog posts, active
community building activities, and using open source in his projects. I think
Tim is one of the main promoters of open source gis today.

I think he is based in South Africa, so the plea to diversify charter members
geographically is also catered for.

Duarte Carreira

I wholeheartedly support this nomination (even although Tim is white,
male and about my age and thus a best fit for what we already have in
the charter membership... :-) He will be a great bridge to Africa.

Arnulf
